Level Up!
Am I to be good or evil?

Am I to be good or evil?

I stumble forward before I can no longer stand on my injured leg, I had almost forgot about it, too excited about everything else. I start breathing heavily and I can't seem to focus. Matt rushes to me, "Are you alright? Were you injured in the battle?" He asks concerned as he starts reaching into his bag.

"I was injured prior. My leg." I say, pain evident in my voice.

He looks to my leg and notices the blood and stitches through my pant leg. "Did you stitch yourself up?" He asks curiously. I can only nod in response, the room begins to spin. "Impressive." He says genuinely. He pulls out a potion bottle from his bag and holds it to my lips, "Drink up. It's a medium health potion." He says and tilts.

Within seconds my wound heals and my stitches disappear. My vision slowly comes back and my head stops spinning. "Man, those potions are incredible." I say as I sit up and look over my leg.

He looks at me with an amused confusion, "Why yes. They are. You should probably stock up on some." He smirks.

"Well, where is the nearest town and I will." I asked, sass making it's way into my tone.

"You aren't from around here huh. I can show you to the city." He says putting his fist to his chest.

"That's nice of you. I would appreciate some help." I smile at him. He helps me to my feet, "Before we leave, I want to look around." I walk toward the back of the cave and sure enough, an awkwardly placed chest that probably shouldn't be here.

I go to it and kick it open and rip open the top. Matt came over curiously and peered over my shoulder. I don't find a lot of good things in here and I need to be cautious of how much I grab. I have to be running out of inventory space. I did find a couple of things that I can sell and also if I keep Matt around maybe I can use him as a type of pack mule of sorts.

I stand back up and turn to him, almost bumping into him because he was standing so close. "Are we ready?" I ask.

Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.

"Of course! I was simply waiting for you." Matt says with a chuckle. We head from the cave and start on the road. We headed the same direction I had been heading to begin with, so I must have been on the right track. Maybe I should pick up a map in the city.

"So what were you doing out here exactly?" I ask curiously. I know he was looking for the cave himself but I don't know why.

"Ah yes. I took a job from the local town's leader to clear the cave as it posed a threat to his merchants and traveling civilians." He explains.

"So you're a good person or did you do it for the money?" I ask trying to get a feeling for who this man is.

"I like to think of myself as a good person. They are offering pay as well since it's a risky job but I am happy to help out the town." He says modestly.

I don't respond right away as I think about this. Am I as good of person as he is? If this works like an actual video game then I want to be paid or compensated for my work. At the same time, if this wasn't just a game but my actual life now-- I'd like to be a good person. Still get paid though, I have to be able to afford things.

We walked for awhile only making small talk, I probably seem odd to him as I know nothing of this world. He never comments on it though. I know I still have to check out the level ups but I'll look at it when we're in town. I doubt opening my menu pauses the world like a video game. I'm starting to feel confused and slowly overwhelmed as the truth to what is happening to me is slowly creeping into my thoughts. I try to avoid it but it will only last so long.

My head starts to pound. I bring my hand up to my temple and start rubbing. It doesn't feel like a normal headache though. "Are you alright?" Matt asks as he notices the pain in my face.

"Mm. I don't know. I'm suffering from a headache. Will we be at town soon? I would like time to rest." I admit.

"Town is near. You should be able to see the guard towers soon." Sure enough, we soon see tall wooden structures peering over the trees. Two guards in each tower, the sun glinting off their chest plates. The forest starts to open up and reveal the town, the sounds of people busy with their day to day life begin to get louder the closer we get. The buildings made of wood, not the fanciest of towns, but there were plenty of people out and about. I hear the yells of salesmen at their stalls calling to people to view their wares. I look around in wonder, this town felt so alive it buzzed my skin.

Unfortunately, as much as I wish to enjoy the town and explore its mysteries, my headache persisted and I followed Matt to the local inn to get a room for the time being so that I may rest. Tomorrow. I will explore tomorrow. I believe their are things I need to contemplate today.
