SS 02. Noah’s divine message

“AARRRGGGHHHH!!!” Noah screamed in anguish as he fell to his knees. He felt as if the sky was crushing down onto him and was unable to think even straight. He tried to stand up nevertheless. Alas, try as he might, his body was no longer listening to his command.

He didn’t know how long it had been but did manage to stand up eventually. With the world spinning before his eyes, he barely managed to speak.

“W, well, done. Sir ... Kamil.”

“You should have worn full plate armour, sir,” Kamil replied.

He normally did not wear heavy armour. He was a nimble fighter who relied on agility. As a knight, however, he had rarely confronted anyone who fought dirty.

“W, where did you learn ... such a trick? If you don’t mind me asking.”

“I grew up in Laufeld where small games and weak monsters roamed. As a child, I had to rely on tricks.”

He had rarely left Lux. He was too young to participate in the unification war which was one of his biggest regrets in his short life so far. The Harder family was a landless noble family. Noah himself was a knight, and a knight needed prestige, and the best place to acquire it was battlefields. With enough prestige, he’d be given a fief and a path to the dream of a landed noble could come.

In this world, there was no concept of count, viscount, and duke. Instead, the power of a noble was determined by how much land he controlled. There were, however, ranks before becoming a full noble. There was a rank of squire which was the lowest rank and then knight. That was a warrior’s path to nobility.

For scholars, the path was different. Those preliminary ranks were not hereditary. One had to reach a full noble status before his lifetime.

If a knight was given a small fief, the fief would return to whoever granted it to him upon the knight’s death.

There were landless nobles as well. They were those who once held a large enough fief, but it was taken away from them at one point. The Harder and Brugg families were such. In the end, those two families chose to serve the Fenchel, a noble family with three fiefs.

Anyway, his lack of real world experience meant that he believed Kamil’s words at its face value. Besides, he had no time to argue. His family jewels were screaming.

“I, I see... Impressive. Let us ... take a break.”

Without waiting for Kamil’s reply, he wobbled his way into the barracks where he collapsed really awkwardly with his hips up in the air. His consciousness would soon fade away.

“Oh, my word?!”

Noah’s body twitched as he heard a high pitched voice. He had just woken up.

“Sir. Harder?! What has happened to you?”

Groaning hard, he managed to drag his body facing up.

“Urrrrrgh..., who ....”

A young woman with blonde hair and blue eyes came to his view. She had shoulder length straight hair in a robe. She looked like the God of Life to him.

The God of Life was known to be the most beautiful woman in the world. As someone who was tasked with granting new lives, she was considered to be the holy symbol, and there were a few religions that worshipped her as their primary God. There was just one problem with the idea: There was no evidence that the God of Life had a female form. However, everyone seemed to have taken the idea that the God was in fact a female.

“Ohhhhh,” Noah, from his utter anguish, became sort of high and hallucinated the woman looking down at him as the God of life. “Praise God. A blessing from the sky. Please, marry me.”

“Whoa?!” The woman jolted as she covered her mouth at once. Then he passed out with a smile on his face.

“Sir. Harder?! Sir. Har....” She stood up at once. “I am gonna get Sir. Hunt! Please wait here!”

“Sir. Hunt! Sirrrrrrr. Huuuuuunnnnttttt!”

When Noah opened his eyes once again, he found himself in his quarter on his bed. And he felt wet. Actually, his crotch felt wet. It was, then, he realized Elias Hunt was present in the room.

“Sir. Hunt? What is going on? What happened?”

Elias had this awkward grin on his face. “Lady Brugg alerted me that you had fallen unconscious in the barracks. I carried you here and cast healing water, and well ...” He trailed off.

“Whoa?” As Noah raised his upper body, he spotted a blob of water on his crotch. It was like a blob of water in zero gravity.

When healing water was cast on a man, it would initially cover his whole body, then it would shrink down to spots where it required healing.

In other words, the very fact that there was a blob of healing water right on his crotch...

“Ehm...,” Noah tried to say something. Eventually, he asked Elias, “Has Lady Brugg seen this?”

Elias rubbed his temple which he took as yes. It was this moment that he recalled what had transpired.

“Oh, no,” He covered his face with both of his hands.

“Sir. Harder, I know it’s a little embarrassing but I wouldn’t go that far.”

“No, no, that’s not what this is about. I -”

He told Elias that he proposed to Greta. What made this worse was that he didn’t mean it.

“I was in so much pain that my head was spinning. I didn’t know what I was doing.” He attempted to excuse himself.

“Sir. Harder, you’ve been hunting for a wife for a while, yes?”

With his face still covered, he nodded.

“Lady Brugg isn’t a bad candidate for a marriage. You two are about the same age. Both of your families share a similar situation. You are a knight, and she is a mage. I mean, what’s there to feel dejected about?”

Noah dropped his hands and looked up at Elias. He was serious.

“Is there anything wrong with Lady Greta Brugg?” Elias asked with a serious face.

Now that he mentioned it, there wasn’t. There was nothing wrong at all with Greta Brugg. In fact, she seemed like an ideal candidate. Besides -

“Perhaps, it was a message from the God of life,” He mused aloud.

“Whatever it may have been, I do think you should consider your proposal. This is a potential marriage which both of your families will accept without much fuss.”

Similar age, Noah was a year older. Check.

Similar ranks for both families: Both were landless nobles serving the Fenchel. Check.

Both were never married: Good. Check.

“And we are both blond and have blue eyes,” Noah remarked. “Perhaps this is meant to be.”

Well, anyway, after some convincing from Elias, Noah made up his mind about the proposal.

He sent a letter to Greta, asking for a private meeting in the back garden by a fountain. When they met, he formally proposed to her.

“I, Noah Harder, wish to propose a marriage to you, Lady Greta Brugg,” He spoke very politely with his right palm touching his chest with a slight bow.

Greta, in return, had her face so red that she looked like she was going to explode.

“I, I, ehm, excuse me!” She turned around and ran. She didn’t just run. She cast levitation and flew away literally.

Interestingly, as Noah watched her fly away, he felt as if he was seeing small tiny green butterflies dancing around her.

And, of course, he wouldn’t have known that she flew all the way to Laufeld. It would be a week later that she would return and accept his hand in the marriage.
