Chapter 40: Hoard and cull

Chapter 40: Hoard and cull

I went to sleep to the constant level up dings and then woke up to them. They pervade my mind. Every few minutes my fire kills another creature. I’m at level 1240/1600. I need to follow Eris’s advice. If I’m going to be fighting gods then I need to have god like stats. I wash the fire off myself and head out to search for a person who can help me. I need someone who can use a lot of different magic and can also cure that magic. I check the demihuman lands but where the jungle once was is nothing but ash and fire. Hiding under the ground isn’t even an effective strategy against this fire because it never goes away. Once you’re underground you can never leave. I sigh and turn back. I’ll need to grab someone from a land I haven't burnt to the ground.

I stop at the university. It has one large tower that one would call a wizards tower. On the roof of the tower sets a man laughing his head off as he cooks human body parts over a regular collared flame. I land in front of it. It’s the man who had replaced his skin with that of other monsters. The master healer who boasted how he could cast racial abilities of monsters. He looks at me and shakes his hock of human leg at me. “Don’t judge me. It’s not like I can get down from here.” The bottom of the tower is covered in black fire. The stone tower saved him. I grab him in my claw. He tries to dodge but the surface area of the roof is too small. “Careful now! I’m not trying to die.”

“And I’m not trying to kill you.”

“You’re not?”

“I need your help.”

“What could you possibly need my help with? And more importantly what’s in it for me?”

“Your life, and a mountain of gold.”

“Deal!” He laughs. I carry him with me to the first cave. It’s still on fire. I look at it perplexed. There is no way for me to get rid of it except to create water, but that creates such a small amount that It’ll take all day to get a suitable area ready. “Allow me!” My captive yells then casts a torrent of water from his hand. It flows down the cave entrance and clears an area in the main chamber. I nod and fly into the body of the cave.

“Make me resistant to everything.” I tell him.

“How?”

“Poison me then cure me. I am currently at medium poison resistance so getting it to master will be the quickest.”

“You’re crazy that’ll take an actual year.”

“I have the quick learner title, and I am Chosen.”

“That’ll take half a fucking year.”

“Then it’ll take half a year.” I confirm. He shrugs. “Then where is this gold? That's a lot of work for little reward.” I dig under where my bed used to be. I push the dirt away and gold coins show through. I pick up a claw full and place it in front of the man. “I will also offer scales and skin for your own experiments on yourself.”

“You’re telling me. All the gold in that whole is mine and I get to inherit some of your power?”

I nod.

“Well, let’s get started.”

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

He casts a medium level poison spell on me. I feel the poison inside me then he quickly cures it. He repeats this, after an hour my poison resists is major.

“Yah sure you want master? That’ll take the longest and all you get from that is being immune to lesser poisons.”

I nod. I want to be as prepared as possible.

When I sleep, I sleep like the dead. My magical friend casts spells on me even in my sleep. I have sealed the entrances and exits. I unseal them only to grab food and reseal them when I return. He seems content with it. While he waits for his mana to rechard he has begun to count his future gold. He drops it in a pouch that never seems to fill up. “That’s a very deep purse.” I muse. “You like it? It’s a sacred artifact. An item pouch that never runs out of storage space. I nicked it from the wizards in the chaos you created.” I laugh. Of course he would have got it from looting. I like how morally unscrupulous he is.

I’m normally incredibly sleepy. Keeping an eight hours of sleep a day schedule is hard. Maybe it’s my dragon body. When you’re a being that lives for thousands of years sleeping for a few days would seem normal.

He told me about every spell he knew. There were none that were more useful than my breath or spells I already knew. Except torrent. It summoned a torrent of water. It was useful for putting out my own fires.

He showed me practices and ways to improve my own magic. When I was awake he would work on my resistances while I worked on my magic.

I had reached level cap a while ago, but there was only one option available to me.

[Astral dragon - A dragon who has just begun to take his first steps into the astral plane. They retain what and who they were before.]

It wasn’t the page long overwhelming stat block that I wanted it to be, but I was near invulnerable to most types of damage and conditions. I thanked my new friend. “It was nice getting to know you.” I told him.

“Yeah, nice working with you too.” He admired his new black scaled arm. “This thing is real powerful.” I nod. “Enjoy it while it lasts.” I take him outside of the cave. I was going to drop him off at the nearest green place, but the fire has traveled an insane distance in six months. Instead I clear a spot by the river and set him down. He has torrent as well he can clear his own path.

I fly back to my cave and evolve.

Nothing feels different when I open my eyes. The cave looks normal. I expected the astral part of being an astral kingblack dragon would be more pronounced.

“Don’t worry, it’ll become more clear soon.” A familiar female voice comes from in front of me. I look down. It’s a woman in a black toga with golden hair. She pushes it up and looks at me with a large smile. “Eris?”

“The one and only.”

“Is that the only perk of being astral.”

“Pretty much. It’s a transitional stage for you. You can poke your nose into the astral plane, can’t even fully enter it. However, there are all kinds of god's waiting to play whack a mole to anything that enters their dimension.”

I nod. “So I just level up one more time and hit my next evolution.”

“Yep.”

“Great, what do you want from me?”

Eris shrugs and giggles. She reminds me of Bronze. “What do you actually want from me. I’m your champion, tell me what you want.”

She sighs. “A world where I’m the only god!”

“That conflicts with my interests after I become godlike.”

“Yep!”

I sigh. This god damned goddes of chaos mother fucker.
