CHAPTER 8 - Day 1
I stood outside our training ground, taking in the crisp morning air.
Emma was beside me, her sword gleaming in the sunlight as she prepared for our daily training session.
Our routine had become second nature to us by now - every morning, rain or shine, we would push ourselves to become better.
"Hey Kael, let's step it up a notch today," Emma said, a fierce grin spreading across her face.
I nodded, tightening my grip on my sword. As we began to spar, our swords clashing in a rhythmic dance,
I felt my muscles start to warm up. Emma was a fierce opponent, but I was determined to keep up with her.
The sound of our swords echoed through the empty training grounds as we battled on,
sweat dripping down our foreheads. I was starting to tire, but I refused to give up.
With a sudden burst of energy, I lunged forward, catching Emma off guard.
Our swords clashed one final time before she stumbled back, a look of surprise on her face.
"You're getting better," she said, grinning from ear to ear.
The last few minutes of our training session flew by quickly as we continued to practice our swordsmanship.
As we sheathed our swords, we noticed that all the other students were heading somewhere in a hurry, as if they were late for something important.
"What's going on?" I asked, puzzled.
Emma shrugged. "Let's go ask someone."
We approached a group of students who were walking briskly,
but they refused to make eye contact with us and hurried past us without saying a word.
"Weird," Emma said, frowning.
As we turned around, we saw the headmaster walking towards us, his face grim.
"Good morning, Headmaster," I said. "Do you know what's happening? All the students seem to be in a rush."
The headmaster hesitated before replying.
"The country has called for all students above the rank of 2 to report for military duty. The students are being mobilized to fight."
We looked at each other with surprise and concern etched on our faces.
My heart sank as I realized the gravity of the situation.
In my time here, I had totally forgotten about the war, and now even students were being called upon to serve.
As I looked around and saw hundreds of students leaving the academy, I felt a wave of panic wash over me.
I thought about my city and my family that i had lost, and I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by the uncertainty of the future.
I went into shock as i tried to process the future of our own lives.
Even though I had lost everyone, I couldn't bear the thought of losing Emma. She was the only friend I had left, the only one who supported me.
"Hey Emma, let's go to our dorm and talk," I said firmly, commanding my voice to hide my anxiety.
As we walked towards our dorm room, I could feel the weight of the world bearing down on me. My shoulders slumped under the burden of my grief.
Once we reached our room, Emma placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Don't worry, Kael. It will be alright. We will be alright," she said softly.
I looked into her green eyes, and for a moment, I saw the pain and sadness she was trying to hide.
A single tear rolled down her cheek, and I noticed that she was hurting too.
I began to calm down. "Thank you, Emma."
As we entered our dorm room, we both sat on our beds and silently looked at each other. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I spoke up.
"I can't lose you," I said, my voice low and trembling.
My words surprised Emma, but she remained silent, allowing me to speak
"You're the only one I have left," I continued, my resolve strengthening with each passing moment.
"If you get called to fight, then I'm going with you. I won't let you face it alone."
Emma's eyes softened at my declaration, and she reached out to place a comforting hand on mine.
"I appreciate that, Kael," she said, her voice gentle and reassuring.
"I consider you my closest friend, and I will do the same," Emma said
We sat in silence for a while, lost in our own thoughts.
"Let's go, our lesson is about to start," she said, her tone measured and deliberate breaking the silence.
I nodded in agreement, and together we made our way to our first class of the day.
As we walked, the weight of the impending lesson hung heavy in the air between us, each of us lost in our own thoughts.
But when we arrived, we quickly realized that this was no ordinary lesson.
The headmaster was there with general Patrio, their presence commanding attention from all in the room.
"Listen, my students," The headmaster began, his voice strong and clear.
"On behalf of the country of Amestos, I announce a tournament."
The classroom was suddenly filled with a tense and melancholic atmosphere as the news sank in. The students murmured amongst themselves, their excitement subdued by a sense of foreboding.
This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.
They knew that the tournament was a crucial event, one that would determine their futures and test their abilities to the limit. The headmaster's announcement only served to remind them of the intense pressure they were under,
and the sacrifices they would have to make to succeed. We all listened in silence, our thoughts consumed by the weight of the challenge that lay ahead.
"Every rank left at this school will participate against each other," the headmaster continued, his words resonating through the room.
"And the last 30 winners will be given the opportunity to enlist in the army if you wish to fight."
I glanced over at Emma and noticed a mix of conflicting emotions in her eyes. I saw a spark of excitement at the prospect of fighting in the tournament,
but also a deep sense of grief and sadness. It was clear that she was looking forward to the challenge of the competition, but at the same time, the thought of the impending war weighed heavily on her mind.
"The tournament is scheduled for tomorrow. Although it may seem like there isn't enough time to prepare, I have decided to cancel today's lessons so that you can focus on training and preparing for the tourtament," the headmaster announced.
With that, the headmaster left the classroom leaving us with General Patrio at the desk.
A somber mood hung over the classroom as the students whispered to each other about the upcoming tournament and the war.
Everyone was acutely aware of the high stakes and the danger that lay ahead. While nobody wanted to lose their lives in the conflict,
they also knew that this was a chance to demonstrate their skills and prove their worth. It was a double-edged sword - an opportunity to show their power and rise to the occasion,
but at the same time, a potential death sentence. The weight of the decision they had to make was heavy, and the gravity of the situation was not lost on any of them.
Despite the heavy atmosphere in the classroom, I looked over at Emma and saw a resolute expression on her face.
She was determined to compete in the tournament and show her power, even in the face of the impending war.
Her unwavering resolve gave me a newfound sense of courage and determination. If she was willing to take on the challenge, then I would too.
I knew that the road ahead would be difficult and dangerous, but I was ready to face it head-on. The thought of competing in the tournament and fighting for what I believed in gave me a newfound sense of purpose,
and I knew that I had to give it my all.
The solemn silence in the classroom was suddenly interrupted by the booming voice of General Patrio.
His words commanded the attention of everyone in the room, and the students listened intently as he spoke.
"You heard the headmaster, and the decision to compete is yours. But I strongly advise that you do." His words were heavy with gravity, and the weight of his authority was felt by all.
As quickly as he had arrived, General Patrio dismissed the class and left, leaving us on our own to prepare for the tournament.
We knew that the road ahead would be challenging, and the stakes were high, but with his words of encouragement ringing in our ears, we were more determined than ever to give it our all
Emma's sudden declaration broke the silence, and I turned to look at her. As she locked eyes with me, I could see the determination and conviction in her gaze.
Without a word, she stood up and gestured for me to follow her. I knew then that she was the kind of person who led by example, and her actions spoke louder than words ever could.
"I'm with you," I replied, matching her determination with my own.
Together, we left the classroom and headed straight to the training grounds, ready to hone our skills and prepare for the tournament.
The road ahead was uncertain and perilous, but we were united in our purpose, and we were determined to face whatever challenges lay ahead, together.
As we made our way through the academy halls, Emma and I couldn't help but notice the emptiness that seemed to pervade the once-bustling corridors.
The absence of the rank 2 and rank 1 students, who had been forced to leave, was palpable, and it was a stark reminder of the high stakes of the upcoming tournament.
When we arrived at the training grounds, we found that we were not the first to arrive. There were already several students there, each with their own reasons for training.
Some were determined and focused, their eyes locked on their targets as they honed their skills. Others looked uncertain, as if they were unsure of what lay ahead and whether they were truly ready for the challenge.
But Emma and I were undeterred. We knew that the road ahead would be difficult and perilous, but we were determined to face it head-on.
We took our place among the other students, ready to train and prepare for whatever lay ahead. The tournament may have been a double-edged sword, but we were willing to take that risk and fight for what we believed in.
As we unsheathed our swords, the sound of metal on metal echoed through the training grounds.
Emma seemed to be lost in thought, and I could sense a weight on her shoulders that she was not willing to share.
We began to spar, our swords clashing against each other with a ferocity that belied the seriousness of our situation.
We fought for what felt like hours, the sweat pouring down our faces as we pushed ourselves to our limits.
As we finally came to a stop, the sun began to set, I caught my breath and looked over at Emma,
hoping to catch her eye and ask her what was on her mind. But she had already sheathed her sword and was walking to the dorm room, lost in thought.
So I took a deep breath, and followed her to the dorm room.
As we entered our dorm room, I noticed that Emma was standing by the window, staring out at sky.

Something about her body language made me pause. She seemed distant, lost in thought.
I walked over to her and put a hand on her shoulder. "What's on your mind?" I asked, concerned.
Emma turned to me, her eyes filled with a mix of emotions. "To be truthful Kael, there's something I haven't told you," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
My heart rate quickened at her words.
"I lost my family years ago due to an accident," Emma revealed, her voice cracking with emotion.
"I was alone for a long time, until I met you." She said as she turned away from me, hiding her emotions.
My heart ached for her.
The pain she must have endured all these years, and yet she never let it show.
I wanted to hold her, to comfort her, but all I could do was listen.
"Finally i felt at peace, at the academy with you. But now the tourtament." Emma said worringly.
"I want to fight in the tourtament, but i do not want to fight in the war, i dont want to lose someone again" She said as a tear started to run down her cheek.
My heart sank at Emma's words, and I could feel the weight of her pain on my own shoulders.
I wanted to tell her that everything would be alright, that we would make it through the tournament and come out the other side unscathed.
But even I knew that was a lie, and so did she.
Instead, I took her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze, letting her know that she was not alone.
"I understand," I said softly.
"And I promise you, we will do everything we can to make it through this tournament and come out the other side together. No matter what happens, I'll be by your side."
Emma looked at me with gratitude in her eyes, and for a moment, the weight of the world lifted from her shoulders.
"Thank you," she whispered, as she leaned in for a hug.
And in that moment, I knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead in our paths, we would face them together.
As we embraced, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. The weight of the tournament and the war still hung heavy in the air,
but I took solace in the fact that Emma was with me.
We spent the rest of the evening in each other's embrace, talking about our hopes and dreams for the future.
We laughed and played cards, relishing the brief respite from the chaos of our lives.
As the night wore on and exhaustion set in, we settled into our beds.
I lay there, my mind racing with thoughts of what lay ahead.
But even in the silence, I knew that Emma was still by my side, and that was enough to bring me a sense of comfort and security.
