Chapter 58 - A Prehistoric Monster

Chapter 58 - A Prehistoric Monster

All froze at the sight of just the snout of this beast. They didn’t know what to make of it. The Humans knew. They’d never lived alongside them and all of their recreations of them were factually wrong, but that was only to make them more terrifying for the thrill of their entertainment. Now they were facing a monster made flesh from the nightmare of Humanity’s ancestors past, before they were little more than rodents hiding in whatever hole they could find to take. A second snout appeared. And then a third. Whatever the creature was it was outside of the walls the aliens thought. They were safe and could relax. The day’s exhausting fight was over and whatever threat these new animals posed they would protect them from any more invaders. The Humans weren’t so certain. They’d seen the movies. Tyrannosaurus were persistent once they found something that interested them.

To no one’s surprise the dinosaurs began trying to climb the wall and ramming into it with as much force as they could muster. They tested the barrier doing all that they could to find a weakness. No one moved. They just watched and listened to the clawing and snuffling. They were too wary to move to get them away or even persuade them to just leave the walls alone. Eventually, one found the gate. Its discovery was announced with a crashing thud against the log obstacle. They held, but the sounds of snapping wood could be heard from the entrance of the city to its core.

Jason tried to stand, but stumbled and fell over into the mud of the battle grounds that had once been the new homes of those who had trusted him. All he could do is shout out an order to barricade the gateway with whatever could be found and hope that there were people that could do it, before the reptilian titans broke through. The T`kata heard the call and began assembling a multi-layered reinforcement, building it from the materials that they had strewn across the area. It was only a matter of moments before they were finished. The snapping of wood fibers continued till it met with a dull thud at the new barrier. A second later the monster roared calling for its compatriots over. All attention was now on the new fortification as the t-rexs took turns bashing their bodies into it like a drum beat. If it didn’t hold they would be easy pickings after the battle they had just fought. Most could no longer stand, their muscles crying out for reprieve from the day’s activities.

With all of their focus on the gate they never stopped to think that the wall that had served to protect them was still in shambles, crumbling, and falling apart. It hadn’t been an aspect of their construction of their new settlement that they had given much thought to. They had never had to hide behind walls in the past. Humans had grown beyond the point where walls had become a real defense while the wall around Gondaluke had been largely for show. No one had attempted to invade it in its history, but it was built during a time in Debris’ history when it was common to have to fortify any settlement. And the Thesin, the walls of any settlement acted in a way to keep them in rather than to keep them safe. They weren’t going to propose to rebuild the wall when they’d have been happier if it was decided to tear them all down so that no one could ever be held captive by them. So when the silhouette of one of the Tyrannosaurus appeared within the walls it wasn’t a challenge to figure out what had happened. It had found a place where the wall was broken down enough for it to get over and enter into its new hunting grounds.

As if announcing its presence to all within the embattled town it let out a thunderous cry filled with victory. All eyes swung from the gateway to the menace that had bypassed their efforts. Their hearts skipped a beat. Their legs locked in place. They didn’t know what to do, but the Rex did. It charged towards the closest group of people to it. It was a cluster of several people. They stood no chance as the jaws of the monstrous carnivore closed around an innocent Sil`phane who was being tended to for injuries she had acquired. The group surrounding her were tossed aside as they attempted to fight back, but their efforts were in vain. Their weapons didn’t even pierce the hide of the creature. The last thing the cat girl heard was her own bloody screams of agony and the cracking of the Crita’s exo-skeleton armor she had been wearing for protection. If she had known that would be her final experience she’d never had worn it. It made everything ever more grotesque, making each bone break sound worse until the monster’s jaws came down for their final time on her skull, snapping, and crushing it, her brains exploding into the mouth of the formerly extinct super predator.

The T`kata that had been able to reinforce the gate before it fell switched the target of their actions, moving to surround the thundering lizard before going to work at hacking at it with their axes. They made no impact, not even a scratch. No matter how hard they swung their weapons or how heavy their blows they left no mark on the beast. All that surrounding it did was allow it to not have to chase down its food. Before they realized they were having no effect several of the T`kata had already become nothing but bite sized snacks for the T-rex. Several were sent flying after being it with its tail, but the rest attempted to flee when they realized they had made. Unfortunately they were too small and slow. The survivors only got away due to it chasing down others. Once it finished with the T`kata in his grasps it simply moved on to the next closest meat.

Meanwhile, the gate’s fortifications had begun to crack and give way. Xev, deciding to jump in made her way up the wall. She measured the situation and then took action. Her fist lit up and radiated a fiery aura, flames licking at her skin. Her feet moved quickly to the optimal position to leap off the edge towards one of the Tyrannosaurus' neck, drilling her fist into its spine. It had no impact other than to seemingly anger the beast. It cried out in anger towards Xev. At the exact same time the other Rex broke through the gateway. She turned her attention to the one breaking in. In that instance the T-Rex that she punched bit down on her, crunching down on her, encapsulating her completely in its mouth. They picked her up off the ground and began shaking her, before tossing her in the air and catching her deeper into its mouth.

Inside the walls the T-Rex shook its head, clearing the cobwebs. It shifted its gaze back and forth looking for a nice juicy meal. Jason jammed his sword into the ground, pulling himself to his feet, his muscles burning in pain. Achingly, he took a fighting stance, yanking the sword from the dirt, and preparing to fight. He felt shaky and unable to move, but he couldn’t just lay there and allow the beast to eat the people who had trusted him. He called Gabi out. She wrapped herself around him and synchronized with his thoughts. This allowed him to overcome his limitations and force his muscles to act against his involuntary desire to keep from moving. The black slits of the T-Rex’s eyes rested on Jason, taking him as a challenge to its dominance. It puffed a breath of hot air out of his nose and then charged at him. Jason’s body tensed in preparation for the fight to come. His entire body burnt with pain. It didn’t matter to him, but if he didn’t have Gabi as his support he’d be on the ground doubled over unable to move. The pain was overwhelming his senses as the T-Rex approached, but the moment he felt that she it was close enough he moved to the side, minimizing his movement. As the Rex passed him by his blade slid across the beast’s leg. His sword only scratched its hide. Jason’s eyes went wide. The ARMS sword was almost completely ineffective. He hadn’t anticipated that would be the case. He was using his low class sword, but it was still and ARMS weapon. No creature had resisted his attack in such a way.

Jason didn’t know what to do. The only thing that he could think to do was resheath his sword and run. He needed time to think, needed to get his mind in order and come up with a plan. Now that he had the monster’s attention, but what is he going to do now. All he could do is run away and dodge the bites by a hair’s breathe. Each movement he made only injured his muscles more. Even with the help of Gabi he could only last for a short time more. His mind raced searching for a solution then remembered that he had another sword that was supposed to be a higher rank. With that thought, his sword deactivated and returned to his ARMS device and vanished before another ARMS device with a silver icon on it, activating it as he launched himself into the air. As he was over the center of mass of the T-Rex tentacles shot out and wrapped around its legs and tugged Jason down, jamming his sword into its back, piercing it deeply. The Rex roared in pain, bucked, and tossed Jason away, the tentacles pulling away from the legs of the Rex. His body slammed against the ground, hit his head, and skidded across the ground. He was knocked out, his sword lost, and at the mercy of the animal that was looking for a meal.

The Rex turned and stalked forward toward the prone body of the unconscious warrior. It towered over him for a moment, gave a rawr of dominance, scaring off any one that would come to oppose his next action. The monster bent over, it’s mouth opening as it was coming to devour its prey. Its saliva dripped from its maw onto the body of Jason before giving a long probing lick, tasting its meal before deciding whether it was going to eat him or not. The gears in its head turning, planning its next move. Then all of a sudden its head dipped to grab Jason’s body up into its mouth. Before it could accomplish the task a light appeared just off the Rex’s snout. A swirl of flamed wrapped around the ball of light and in the next instant an explosion of fire. It pushed back the Rex way from Jason, leaving marks in the dirt where its talons grasped at the ground but to know avail. Another explosion rocking it off kilter. And then another finally lifting it off the ground and into the air. The creature toppled to the ground, but the explosion did not cease. One after another. Fiery explosion after explosion. The nightmare was pulverized into the ground by a spectacle of brilliant fire power that reminded the Humans that watched with bated breath, hoping for a victory, of a fireworks show back home on Earth. After several minutes of explosions had gone by they finally stopped and the monster that was once a terror was nothing more than char broiled reptile, ready to be served as the main course at the victory celebration dinner.

Everyone wondered who had been able to do this. They looked around for who it could be. What they found was a little girl standing all alone, crying. She was the one who had been helping to heal people earlier. They were surprised to find that their hero was Rina.
