Chapter 3: Halia Magic Academy

Chapter 3: Halia Magic Academy

Professor Collin Kresnik entered the lecture hall. It was one of the largest in the academy as it was mostly used for intro classes for all freshmen. Collin was originally a combat instructor for seniors at the demand of the headmaster. However, his lack of discipline and ability to teach combat came into light and he opted to teach Intro to Magic and History 100. Despite his combat abilities, he enjoyed teaching students who shared his interest in the science of magic and the history of magical beasts. Collin wore a white coat over his body with a turtleneck underneath and black slacks. His crazy hair covered most of his face and he wore thick glasses. He was an enigmatic character for many students as they only knew his relation to the Kresnik name, not of his exploits.

The Kresniks were at the forefront of magical advancement for the masses and righteously so as they invented many devices that aided in the widespread use of magic today.

He slowly trudged into the lecture hall, tired from the fight last night and the spite he gained from his comrades for his lackadaisical attitude. It’s not like he meant to meet Isaac Valentine as the Heartrich Casino. He only felt sorry for Anna, but she only lost consciousness according to the Medics that arrived at the scene. He was relieved that she didn’t die. He would have felt guilty even as little as he knew her and decided to visit her in the Halia Hospital later today.

He quickly stood at the podium and began his class.

“Secret societies came into the light as magical beasts began appearing around the year 2030. With magic being the only way to damage these beasts, secret societies, full of mages, rose in power as the government changed into an aristocracy with their influence. The year is 2300 and the world is now dominated by magic. The Halia Magic Academy was created by these nobles, cultivating magical talent all around the world.”

The atmosphere was bad as nobles were seated next to those that couldn’t even wield magic. The commoners with MADs glared back at nobles. At this rate, a fight could occur at any moment. He attempted to dispel the mood by making them focus on the lesson, trying to grab their interest and nothing is better than talking about magic.

“Mana is all around you. Limitless in quantity, it is provided to all of us, free to bend it to our will. This is how mages of ages past manipulated mana. During those days, their bodies were more suitable vessels and compatible with the mana around them. The only limitations are the body you are born with, as lesser vessels, are less compatible with the mana surrounding them. Is everyone following?”

“Hear that commoner, you’re just a lesser vessel and you have the gall to insult me.”

“I have the gall to beat your ass too. Fight me.”

Whispers abounded all around the classroom. Other arguments quelled as they focused their attention on just these two students. However, the students thought professor didn’t notice, absorbed in the lesson. The commoner had black hair and eyes with a sword-type MAD at his waist. The noble had dark red hair with blue eyes. Mana concentrated around his body. Static shocks and sparks crackled around him.

“They’re not really gonna fight right? We have to come here tomorrow too. I don’t want to sit on rubble.”

This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

“That commoner’s gonna get his ass handed to him.”

“What’s that idiot teacher doing?”

“I commend his courage though.”

“Courage? More like retarded. Am I right?” This kid chuckled to himself.

“Show them we can’t be pushed around. Kick his ass!”

“Crush him so they won’t dare stand up to us nobles again!”

A student sitting directly in front of Professor Collin wildly whipped her hand back and forth trying to grab his attention with a huge smile on her face. He looked straight, not even making eye contact with this excited kid. Excited people drained him. He continued on without disturbance pretending not to see the impending doom of this lecture hall.

“Mana in its rawest form is various energies intertwined, then changed to magic closest to your affinity. The more compatible your body is to these various energies, the more mana you can convert to magic. The more talented mages can convert mana using their body as a vessel.”

The blond noble smirked at the commoner as his mana began to expand more intensely, the static and sparks lasting longer than before.

“However, those are far in between. So, with the increase in magical disturbances, Magic Assistant Devices (MADs), were invented to spread the use of magic widely for more convenient and military purposes. Higher grade MADs are able to convert more mana, giving the user access to stronger and potent magic.  If you prove yourselves to be strong, the school will issue a higher-grade MAD without your permission. MADs are harder to rank. However, if a legitimate crest is placed upon the MAD, it is undoubtedly of high quality and could even rival talented mages.”

The noble looked down at the commoner’s MAD. A black lion was engraved onto the scabbard from the base of the sword midway towards the end. “Nice bluff.”

“Try me.” His eyes were cold.

“I believe there should be more guidelines, such as morals and ethics, but sadly, I don’t make the rules. Are there any questions—“

Before he could finish, an explosion was heard behind him. He had felt the mana gathering behind him as he thought, but

didn’t believe they would actually fight on the first day of the semester.

'Why can’t we all just get along?' He thought to himself and heaved a deep sigh. An electric wave crossed the lecture hall as students began to run for their lives. The sword-type MAD was able to cut the electricity with ease.

‘These goddamn kids are starting to annoy me.’ Collin’s eye lazily glowed blue intensely and begun to suck all the mana within the lecture hall. There was no one to contest his mana absorption within this lecture hall full of upstart brats.

The sword dulled quickly and the noble’s magic stopped abruptly.

Only a few students had realized what had just happened.
