The Mohst Difficult Foe

The Mohst Difficult Foe

An unstoppable force meets an immovable object. That's what Alex thought as the fight began. Alex watched as Caleb ran forward, bat held high. The golem lumbered up to meet him, the background music strumming along.

The two met in a clash. Caleb swung his bat onto the golem's leg while it retaliated by kicking out. The bat rebounded off the diamond limb unharmed by such a simple weapon. Similarly, the golem's momentous kick stopped when it hit Caleb. Retaliating, Caleb brought the bat down onto the leg again and again.

The sound of metal filled the cavern, creating a nasty dissonance with the music. Nathan and June moved forward to help, though neither could damage the diamond monster. Light refracted as it brought limbs up to clash with swords. Caleb, more nuisance than anything, had swung his bat against the golem so many times it was bent in an L shape.

Once June and Nathan activated their powers, Alex moved. Cool Cat and Cat's Meow kept her calm and nimble under pressure as she slipped past the golem on the right and made a beeline for the dungeon core. In a panic, the golem turned, much faster than anyone expected.

Thinking quickly, Nathan used his blessing of impulse. The golem turned too quickly, losing its footing and crashing onto the ground. Coal dust blasted upward, loosed by the creature's giant mass. June followed up with her power and kept the golem from moving. Turning back, Alex saw the golem on the ground sitting in a way that made her think it was embarrassed to have fallen and needed a moment.

Her senses picked up something as she turned back. In front she saw the pedestal come to life, unfolding like a transformer into a small mech. One arm shaped itself into a fist while the other was a blade. One the head sat the gem, like a pilot for the stone contraption.

"Sir Purrsalot I need you!" She growled.

Out of her purse hopped the komainu, barrier up and ready. The mech's fist swung up in an uppercut only to bounce off the shield.

"Kit distract it please." She asked the cheshire.

The striped cat appeared on the mech's shoulder and licked the core sitting on the head. The mech jerked backward, stumbling as the cheshire appeared at its legs and tripped it up.

Alex pounced on the mech, bringing out Jim-Jam and Rocket to pin its limbs down. Straddling it, she placed a capsule directly on the gem and watched as the essence flowed into the ball. She made a quick check to ensure the essence was correct (it was) and then placed another.

She had filled around half the capsules before there were complications. June and Nathan had learned that their powers complemented each other throughout the fight. The two powers worked in tandem to keep the golem in constant states of impulsive action and lazy inaction. If the golem threw a punch, Nathan would make the glimmering monster overbalance and fall. After, June would keep it on the ground. Caleb did his best to be a distraction at the beginning but instead turned into a human shield for the two as he caught any missed punches.

But the golem had learned as well, and it realized Caleb was preventing it from reaching the two. Now, golems aren't often known for their intelligence, but Nathan's power had an unintended side effect. Impulsive action for a golem turned out to be a normal thought process for a human. With the increased intelligence the golem faked a punch only to grab Caleb at the last moment.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Struggling, Caleb tried to pry free but his body couldn't push against the strength of diamond. In a smooth motion, the golem bowled Caleb away. The man rolled around on the coal floor until he thwapped into the side of the wall. He stood, dizzy.

June and Nathan no longer had their shield and it was only a matter of time until the golem caught one of them. In desperation, June tried to use another of her atomizer bombs. Nathan caught her hand before she threw it. "The place is filled with coal!" He shouted over the looping music.

Realization crossed June's face as she realized she might've blown the entire area to dust. Cursing, she dropped the grenade back in her pack and readied herself for a fight.

Alex heard the curse and looked over. Caleb was running back from the edge of the hall, covered in dust, while Nathan and June were barely dodging the golem's large fists. Making a decision, Alex called to Sir Purrsalot. "Keep them safe!"

"Yes Alpha!" The komainu nodded and raced over to the paladin. June had dropped her power, but the golem made a decision to fall with its entire weight onto Nathan. The paladin dashed to the left, trying to escape the large monster's wingspan. Sir Purrsalot met with Nathan just in time. As the golem crashed onto the cavern floor, the komainu jumped to Nathan and erected a shining barrier around the man.

Diamond collided with force and the two warred. But the momentum of the golem's fall was more than Sir Purrsalot expected. His barrier didn't break, but the circular wall of force was squeezed out from under the golem's arm and shot across the room like an arrow. June watched in horror as the barrier traveled to smash straight into the wall.

Thinking quickly, Alex turned to Kit. "Catalyst!" She howled. She grabbed Rocket's paw and heaved him. "Catapult!"

With Kit's teleporting abilities, Rocket was displaced straight between the cave wall and Nathan. Seeing the projectile, Rocket kicked off the wall and pounced. Four claws grabbed hold of the large barrier, slowing the sphere but shaking it horribly. The barrier spun and Rocket's tail found the ground. The friction between the two slowed the barrier's travel, causing it to whack into the wall instead of smash into it.

The impact was still enough to jar both Nathan and Sir Purrsalot. The two shook their heads, dazed from the two impacts. Rocket sat on the ground, licking his friction-burned tail in self-pity. None looked ready to jump back into the fray.

Only June was left to stop the diamond golem, and Alex only had Jim-Jam and Butterwhiskers left. Jim-Jam was only barely holding the mech down while Alex frantically activated capsule after capsule. June stood in front of the golem, willing it to stay on the ground with all her might.

It wasn't to last, stopping something that large took a toll and June had to release her power after a few seconds. The golem stood, ready to bring a hand down onto the woman.

"For Narnia!!!" Screamed Caleb as he charged past June. He brought his shoulder down in a football tackle and dove at the monster's leg.

"Butterwhiskers go," Alex said, grabbing one of the last capsules.

The Cat Sidhe flew over, breaking into smoky particles before reforming next to Caleb. It zipped between the legs of the golem and nipped at the free leg. The golem's foot slid into a pile of coal dust, losing footing. It stumbled for long enough that Nathan was able to gather his wits and cast his blessing. The golem tried to catch itself early, tripping again and crashing into the ground for the third time.

Alex grabbed the last of the capsules and placed it on the dungeon core. The mech was bucking wildly as Jim-Jam tried to keep it down. As Alex opened the capsule, the mech threw off Jim-Jam and leaped up to stab at Alex with its sword arm. She panicked, throwing her arms up to block.

"Alpha!" Jim-Jam screamed. Oh, how she wished she still had a cat.

Wait. Wait wait wait. She did!

"Chonkers!" She screamed.

A silver cat, fatter than even the fattest of cats, leaped out of the bag with the grace of a lioness. It collided with the mech, pushing it back onto the floor. A loud crack resounded and coal dust flew up. Alex breathed in a lung and hacked.

As the dust settled and she caught her breath, Alex was treated to the sight of Chonkers sitting atop the mech. Its arms were flailing madly in an attempt to push the nanocat off. Instead, the fat cat yawned and purred a bit at the nice massage it received. Alex grabbed the last capsule and activated it, draining the essence and then collapsing on the ground.

"I think you're my current favorite." She whispered.

Chonkers purred in delight.
