Immortal Love in the Dark
32. Mysterious man

32. Mysterious man

"Milady, please wait for me." Reyna panted as she followed her Mistress. Her eyes widened as soon as she saw her lifting her dress to prevent herself from tripping over it, a scene she had been witnessing regularly since her Lady had gained consciousness.

Reyna could not hide her shock and looked around her to see if anyone was looking at them. To her relief, nobody was staring at them and her Mistress's weird behavior. They were busy with their work to even care about it.

"Milady, please lower your dress. Please." She begged softly. But her voice fell on deaf ears as the Lady in front of her kept running.

Reyna had no idea why she was even running. They had been standing on the balcony of her Mistress's room after breakfast when she saw her Lady stare at the lawn in front of them. She looked shocked and was frozen to her spot. Before Reyna could even comprehend what had happened, she started to run, startling Reyna all the more.

Ignoring Reyna's words, Irene did not stop until she reached the lawn, just outside the balcony of her room, and looked around her. But she could see no one. 'Where did he go?' She wondered, her forehead marring with a frown. She hurriedly searched to find the man she had seen from her balcony. But other than the guards, she could find no one around them. The man had disappeared even before she could take a good look at him.

"Milady," Reyna huffed as she tried to control her breathing. She panted loudly before she calmed her raging heart and breathing. "What...What happened, Milady? Why did you rush here?" She queried in confusion. Watching her Mistress look around, she too followed suit to find out what she was searching for. But she could find nothing suspicious.

"What are we looking for, Milady? Please tell me. I will look for it." Reyna stated, still looking around before her gaze fixed on the Lady beside her.

"Reyna, I am searching for the man who was standing here a few moments ago. But I am unable to find him." Irene finally spoke after searching for a long time.

Irene was enquiring to Reyna about her host body, trying to get familiarized with her other self when she saw a man with a cloak staring at her from the lawn. He had his forehead covered with the hood of the cloak. But Irene could distinctly make out his red eyes that were sinister enough to evoke fear in her. She shivered in her place, for the man's expression was nothing less vicious.

The next moment, Irene darted towards the lawn, trying to catch hold of the man who had instilled terror in her, only to find the place empty. She could find no one besides the few guards who stood in the places. It was as though the man had vanished entirely.

"Which man are you talking about, Milady?" Reyna blinked at her, wondering if she was asking about the servant or a guard who had walked by the lawn. "Was it a servant or a guard? He might be somewhere here. Do you want me to ask around, Milady?"

"No, no, Reyna. As far as I could tell, he was not a guard or a servant. He was wearing a black cloak and had blood-red eyes. I saw him right here from the balcony." Irene pointed to the spot where she was standing, her frown deepening in worry.

Reyna was taken aback by her words. Not only was she stunned to hear about a cloaked man, but she was also appalled to know that he had red eyes. The only one she knew who had red eyes was the King, Kieran Allendale. She had not seen or even heard of anybody else with red eyes. Reyna could not hide her fear and gaped at her Mistress in bewilderment.

"Milady, was it His Majesty you saw a few moments ago?" Reyna queried, an unknown excitement lacing her tone.

"No, Reyna. It was not the King. Though I could not see his face, it was not him. I am certain about it." Irene shook her head immediately. She was familiar with how the King looked. Even though she had only seen him the previous night, his masked face was etched in her mind and was impossible to remove him even if she wanted to.

Just a brief meeting had rendered her thinking about him all day long. The mysterious and intimidating aura around the King and the familiarity in his gaze compelled Irene to lose her mind slowly. She was unable to concentrate on anything else but him. Every thought was filled with him and the look he had given her before she had entered the carriage. It was filled with relief, happiness, yearning and dominantly, love. His soulful gaze was making her go crazy and Irene was sure that by the end of the day, she would definitely go mad and the person responsible for it would be the King of Rothnia.

"Milady, I presume you must have seen wrong. As far as I know, only His Majesty has red eyes in Rothnia." Reyna tried to assure her but Irene was not convinced.

"No, Reyna. I am assertive that I saw him. He was standing right here. He was smiling at me, his red eyes looking at me as though I was his prey. I am not hallucinating, Reyna. Believe me." Irene held Reyna's hands as she pleaded with her frantically. She was utterly frightened even to recall the face of the man she had seen.

Reyna did not even get the opportunity to comfort her when Irene let her go and approached the nearest guard in a hurry. The man was visibly startled to see his Mistress approach him in a disheveled state and he stood still with his eyes lowered, waiting for her orders.

"Milady," He greeted and bowed lightly.

"Where is the man who was standing here just now?" Irene did not waste time greeting him back and jumped to the issue immediately.

"What man, Milady?" The guard gave her a confused look and frowned lightly.

"The man who was wearing the black cloak. He had red eyes. He was just here a few moments ago." Irene pointed towards the place she was standing before, completely forgetting how unladylike she looked at that moment. "Where did he go?"

"Milady, I was standing here all this time and did not see anyone wearing a black cloak. I think you must have seen wrong." The guard frowned in confusion but did not dare raise his head.

"What?" Irene was in disbelief and her lips parted in shock. "How is that possible?" She held her head in frustration and her eyes fell on the guard beside the man. Not giving up hope, she approached him only to find the same result. He too had not seen any man on the lawn.

"How is that possible? How did nobody else see him? What is happening?" She mumbled to herself while an oblivious Reyna looked at her in worry. Her face was filled with panic and anxiousness and she held her Mistress, concerned for her.

"Milady," Reyna was just about to comfort her when Irene's gaze blurred. The world around her spun and her head turned heavy. Darkness clouded her sight and her body lost its strength. Her legs gave away and she fainted immediately.
