Chapter 2

The chick awoke, in a shell quite different from its first one. Although it didn't have a clue and simply struggled to break out of its new one. From an outside view, it was very beautiful, if one were to ignore the brain-melting pain that would come from looking directly at it. It began to scratch and peck with its beak at the walls around it, feeling itself vaguely recall doing this recently with much easier success.

After escaping the egg it sat down beside it and went to sleep, not noticing the racket around it as insects, birds, monsters, and even a large earthworm all surrounded the area. Unsure if they should get closer, they decided to wait.

----------------------------------------

Axore had been a Butcher for 23 years before he eventually upgraded his job to Raging Butcher. Not a common job, but nothing amazing enough to get him anywhere in the world. After changing his job he would join in on emergencies such as this one. The only reason anyone actually put an effort into having him join them was for his dexterity and ability to dismantle monsters at a pace even veteran hunters couldn't keep up with.

Emergencies happen around 3 times a year usually during the peak of the 3 seasons, and would usually lead to minor skirmishes that wouldn't amount to any loss of life for them. Tonight didn't seem to be any different from those days, except for the outrageous mana movement which led them to believe this might be more of a human threat.

As he and the others neared the wooded area on the west side of the village, they couldn't help but see the astounding number of wildlife both dangerous and peaceful packed together and looking into their own forest.

As he joined up with the others at what remained of their bordering wall to the forest, he found that the others were already arguing.

"If they're not moving, we shouldn't provoke them!" One said, clearly with fear in his eyes. Another rebuked him saying, "It's because they're not moving that we should be attacking them. Whatever has them so fixed onto their home while also leaving them outside of it probably won't be leaving anytime soon, so we might have a chance at keeping everything away if we force them back into the woods."

Multiple people seemed to agree with the last person and while Axore would've liked the idea if they knew what they were dealing with, they all had no idea from what he was hearing. He had no wish to draw attention to their only bordering wall to the forest when the animals stretched around both sides of the forest from what he could see.

Axore straightened up and began to get their attention. "Hey! Hey, all of you! Listen to me. We have no idea what's in that forest and I know nothing like this has happened to this town before. I can clearly see multiple monsters that I have never butchered in my life standing in the midst of them. That means their home is further than the distance any of the adventurers in this town have gone without dying."

That got a big reaction from them. None of them wanted to die without a good cause, and prodding monsters for the small chance that things would go the way they wanted, wasn't exactly appealing to any of them.

"Now then," said Axore, "Has anyone sent a courier to the nearest city for aid?" One person stepped forward, she was an average looking woman named Lithyst with hair that was such a deep color of purple it shimmered in the little moonlight they had, if not for her height that was at 4'2" (128cm), and her massive temper, she would probably be more popular. "I sent a request by tune. If we don't receive aid within 2 hours, we've been abandoned."

That certainly set people off. They were in an uproar and it didn't appear that they would be calming down anytime soon. Axore just looked at Lithyst with a bit of scorn and she shrugged. He waved his hand at the clamoring apes and raised an eyebrow at her. She once again shrugged and whistled a sharp note and then everyone was silenced.

Most of them knew by now what was happening, as it wasn't an uncommon occurrence when they would be silenced, sometimes for hours, for annoying her. Axore calmly began to tell them, "If we were to be abandoned over something this fascinating the country itself would smite that city, let alone the gods above. We have nothing to fear, except all of your irrational judgments."

Most looked down with shame and embarrassment after that, while others only looked on with anger. If we're getting reinforcements, the best we can do is repair the wall further away from the monsters. We're going to need it if things do end up messy." Axore pointed at a random person and said, "Go get a carpenter and a mason for a temporary wall to be made. Tell them they need to hurry, even if they have to break out their temporary war abilities."

The young man who was pointed at pointed at his mouth and glared at Axore. Axore looked at Lithyst and said, "Would you be so kind as to allow him to speak?" Looking at her with a matter of facial expressions was okay, as she barely understood them, but her ability to distinguish tones was enough to get his ass kicked if he said anything rudely to her.

Off went the young man after being freed from silence, as Axore turned around to look at the thousands of creatures nearby. Anyone with an animal job would be salivating at this experience. Even some of the trackers amongst the adventurers were looking with concealed glee as they marked down patterns and sketches of animals that most would never get to see in such good condition.

Axore himself was enjoying the image of all of them stripped of their flesh and innards while in his back room, waiting to be cut into sellable portions or sold whole as ingredients for a matter of professions.

Time dragged on.
