Day One Done

I chatted with Vikir and the other guards at the front gate til his shift was over. Eventually two guards came to relieve Vikir and the other guards of their positions.

“Have a good night y'all.”

“Goodnight Vikir.”

“Night Chief.”

“C’mon kid, I want to get home and have a meal before bed.”

“Coming.”

Vikir and I walked through the kingdom, towards his home.

“So kid, what is this plan you have in mind if you don’t mind telling me?”

“Well, the plan for the first week is too do odd quest from the guild and save up money to buy equipment for the next part of my plan.”

“And the next part of your plan is. . .?”

“I’ll reveal that once I get the money saved up, don’t worry, I’ll be the first to show you.”

“Okay, just don’t do anything without thinking it through first.”

“Aye Aye Captain.”

Vikir gave me an annoyed smirk at my choice response.

We walked in silence for a moment before I decided to start up a conversation, usually I wouldn’t be interested in getting to know others, but I’m not gonna live how I used to.

“How long have you and your sister lived here in Breufidem?”

“We were both born and raised here, I’m proud everyday to wake up under this kingdoms flag.”

“What about the rest of your family?”

Vikir had a pained expression for a moment and gave a heavy sigh.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

“My father was a knight that served this kingdom well, but he sadly perished during the first demon war and my mother also sadly passed away due to disease, not long after my fathers passing, I still believe that his death took part in her untimely death.”

There was silence again, I had to take a moment to process the heavy information that Vikir told me, hearing about how the world is truly unfair to those who’ve lived here from the start, really set in my mind that this is a real world, with real consequences. I snapped out of my thoughts and decided to continue my conversation with Vikir.

“Is your father the reason you became a knight?”

I thought about giving condolences, but he’s probably heard enough of those for a lifetime, so I thought I’d try to hear more about the people he’s lost.

“He was, I always felt such pride watching my father train in his armor, he was diligent, intelligent, and heroic. I always looked at his back and thought he was strong, but when I looked at his back when he wore his armor, I thought he was invincible. Sadly, that was just a child's imagination, no one is invincible.”

“After he passed I trained even hard to become a knight, I joined the knight academy under the kingdom and excelled to the top of my class, showing that my father left a great legacy in his stead, but sadly after graduating knight school and officially becoming a knight, I was sent into the warzone of the second demon war, where I lost my eye in battle, and had to give up on being a knight that fights for the kingdom. So now I instead serve as a knight that protects the kingdom, guarding the front gate.”

“Is that what you want to do though?”

“Sigh, I do not know myself, if I’m being honest, I do not hate it, as I am still doing what a knight must do, but I would definitely prefer working as an instructor at the knight academy.”

“Then why don’t you.”

“Haa, sadly, even though my father was a great knight, he was only a commoner, a position like instructor at the knight academy is always bought by nobility.”

“Damn, that’s unfair.”

“That’s just how life is, there’s nothing we can do to change it, but there are always ways to live with it.”

“Ah we’re here.”

We arrived at a two story home midway to the center of the kingdom where the castle sat.

“Holy, you live in this big place all by yourself.”

Vikir unlocked the door and we walked in.

“No, this is too much for just me, I live here with my sister.”

“Oh, is it really okay for me to sleep here?”

“Yeah it’s no issue, plus, she won’t be home tonight, here and a few of the attendants at the guild are pulling all-nighters to get all the new adventurer information and quest in order, but I appreciate the concern.”

“Oh, okay, that’s good.”

“If you want you can make yourself comfy, I’m gonna heat some stew up from the fridge if you want some.”

Only now did I realize I hadn’t eaten all day and my stomach was starting to complain.

“Yes please.”

As Vikir heated up the stew, I continued to ask him questions to try and get him to know more and after the stew was heated, we sat in silence, enjoying each other's company.

After we we’re done with our meal, it was time for bed, Vikir handed me a blanket and pillow to sleep with.

“We don’t really have a guest room, so you’ll have to use the couch, but don’t worry, it’s quite comfy.”

“Thank you, Vikir, I really appreciate it.”

“No prob kid,” Vikir turned and walked upstairs. “Goodnight kid.”

“Goodnight Vikir,” I called back.

I laid there in the dark, content with how the day had gone, but still thinking about all I had to do for the future.

‘It’s gonna be a long road, but I will reach my goal, I’m gonna have my harem, one step at a time.’

‘. . .’

‘I just realized, doesn’t Yuri mean Lesbian in Japanese.’

‘Shit, I really hope no Japanese people also got isekai’d like me.’
