Mine Was a Bird

Mine Was a Bird

It was night time as Lenny made his way through the trees and camps outside the European knock off.

The whole time he wondered why anyone would want to meet him.

A legend?

It was cinematic like, when Lenny saw Ralph.

He was leaning against a tree, with a large cowboy like hat on, trench coat, and his huge gun hanging off his belt.

This must be a mistake.

Lenny came forward.

"Are you Ralph?"

Ralph nodded.

"I'm Lenny. They call you a legend."

"I've just been here a while."

Lenny stared at his feet, nervous.

"I hear you have something. Your gift."

Lenny was worried it would come up.

But why lie.

Lenny pulled the switch out.

"How'd you get that?"

"It was my gift."

"The glow gave you that?!" Ralph said, stepping forward.

"Glow?"

"Yeah. The glow."

"What do you mean glow?"

Ralph was frustrated. "What the hell do you mean the glow. The glow! The thing that chose us and all that."

"Oh. Yours was a glow?" Lenny asked, chuckling.

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

"Aren't all of them?! Isn't it the same one?!" Ralph was losing his mind.

"No. Mine was a bird," Lenny said, smiling.

"A bird?!"

"Yeah."

"Like a hawk? Or eagle?"

"No. Just a talking bird. Yours was a glow?!"

Ralph put his head in his hands.

"Just when I think I get the hang of this crap."

"What did you get? Your gift"

"Oh," Ralph said, pointing at Deerborne. "I got Deerborne."

"Your gun?"

"Yeah," Ralph said, as he couldn't help but think it was cool he got a huge futuristic gun.

"Nice. Nice to meet you," Lenny stuck his hand out.

Ralph shook it and smiled.

"It's nice to do things like that. From the old world, yeah?" Lenny asked.

"Yeah. This After is crazy, right?"

"Yeah. I try not to think about it. Or I'll nuts. So. Why have you been here so long? Usually after a mission you get zapped out."

"I don't know," Ralph said, sadly. "I took out my first guy, and I've been stuck ever since. So I've tracked down other anomalies and killers, and probably broken this copy a few times. You noticed there are no more aerial attacks around here. You are welcome. But I'm still here. I heard you had the light switch. I didn't know if it could help me."

"No," Lenny said, wearily. "It just closes the ones that are open. I have to be near it."

Ralph nodded.

"Okay then. I guess I'll just wait to hear from my glow. Or your bird."

"I'm sorry I wasn't more help. Maybe you can help me on my mission? What do you think this is a copy of?"

"Madrid in the 1930s. But I'm not sure. Absolutely. I'd be happy to. Who is it?"

"Wolfram."

Ralph frowned.

"Say again?"

"Wolfram."

A cold shiver went down Ralph's back.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Ralph frowned again. Part of the anomalies is that you knew what they looked like and their name. No guessing. No mistakes. It was downloaded in you somehow.

They knew too. So if Lenny's was Wolfram, it really was.

"That is who my first mission was. And I did kill him."

Lenny felt horrible for Ralph. Stuck here, in this loop of death. Thinking he had taken care of it.

"I'm sorry. He's the worst. He can never go back," Lenny warned. "But he's still here."
