For some reason, Wu just felt like he could trust Fatera. Her character and personality seemed so remarkably simple, yet underneath her straightforward bluntness, there seemed to be something hidden. Wu does not know what that is, but he has a feeling that it won't change how Fatera is as a person.
"This weapon was once one of the 11 legendary weapons. When Lera and I were journeying through the Eastern continent, we encountered and fought against owners of two of them." Wu said, "Ver defeated Skylar Jay, the man who wields the Sky-Splitting Sword, and I defeated Aya the Great Archer. Then, I made some modifications so I can use the One-Shotter bow on my own."
Fatera's face was still, and her crimson eyes were locked onto Wu as she slowly breathed in and out for a few seconds. Then, she suddenly raised her fist, causing Lera to jump to Wu's defense before she reached forward and poked Wu hard in the legs.
"Nah." Fatera laughed, "There is no way someone like you can defeat Aya."
"Well, then perhaps Aya just felt nice that day~" Wu shrugged, and that remark ceased Fatera's laughter as she sighed and scratched her head. She didn't want to believe it, and she couldn't believe it, but she had to accept it.
"I...came across the wielders of the 11 legendary weapons when they moved as a group in the Western Continent before." Fatera said, leaning back and straightening her legs, taking up most of the room in the little tent that made up Wu's lab, "All 11 of them, actually."
"Don't tell me you-"
"-Me and my...got into a bit of a scuffle?" Fatera said hesitantly, the mental maths going crazy as she recalled how many of the wielders she stepped on, "All I remember is that there is always an archer that's sniping me from way out. I remember the feeling of the shots, actually..."
Fatera rolled up her shirt slightly, revealing a tiny scar near her obliques over the layers of densely packed muscle, "This thing came from Aya's best attack, and it actually damaged me, just a bit."
"Woah." Wu leaned forward rapidly and looked at Fatera's body with his eyes open, "Was the shot that small? I never..."
"Yep, she narrowed it down so much that it was like a single strand of fabric." Fatera said, bending her body so the scar is actually closer to Wu before Lera yanked him back, "It went right through my defenses."
"Fascinating..." Wu murmured, "So there are more things I can do with the One-Shotter..."
"That's partially why I am here." Fatera said, cracking her neck and covering her belly again despite how much she liked the attention, "Ya are far too reliant on your weapon, and that's why ya are limited! Train with me, and I will turn YOU into a weapon! Ya being strong, is the only way to be strong, not to rely on clutches that inherently limit ya potential!"
"Disagree." Wu said sharply after Fatera delivered her speech, and she was clearly caught off guard by his sharp response.
"What did you say?"
"Saying that a weapon is self-limiting inherently assumes two things." Wu said, putting up his index and middle finger, "First, that assumes the weapon cannot be changed. That's not true, given all of the modifications I have added to the One-Shotter since I obtained it. Second, that assumes that...I can change. And as much as I can improve physically, I don't have an ounce of Wave in me."
"How's that possible?!" Fatera shouted, "How are you alive then?"
"Good question." Wu smiled, "Or perhaps that's exactly why I am still alive in this world."
"Fatera." Lera said, interrupting, "If you want to know the whole truth, we need to know that we can trust you."
"I ain't got no secrets!" Fatera said, patting herself on the chest, "I am simple! I just journey around so I can fight lots of strong people! That's...it! Really."
As silly as her motivations sound, Wu and Lera couldn't really think of anything else that proves otherwise so far.
"Oh-oh! The curiosity is killing me..." Fatera grunted as Wu and Lera both fell into silence, "I will swear it on my father, how's that? I mean, I will probably be disappointed by whatever you say anyway..."
"I was summoned to this world as the Fourth Savior." Wu said, and Fatera's expressions froze as the chatty girl became deathly silent.
Then, after the tent became so quiet that Wu can practically hear her heartbeat, she finally opened her mouth, "Say again?"
"You heard it." Wu shrugged, "I don't really know why, but since I am here, I am going to whatever I need to do. And Lera's my guardian."
"THAT I see, but you as the Savior..." Fatera smashed her lips together and let out an unsatisfied hum, "You are too weak!"
"That's what I thought!" Wu clapped his hands together, "Like...why the heck was I picked?!"
"Argh...but that explains why you are alive despite not having anything...Lera seems like a babysitter." Fatera scratched her head furiously. She may seem simple, but she's more intelligent than she looked, and she quickly came to accept it.
"So...disappointed?" Wu chuckled at the struggle of Fatera before she glared at him with her crimson eyes.
"Well...no! But yes!" Fatera grunted, "Who else knows? Why isn't this on the News everywhere?"
"Because we were kinda being hunted down for a whole season." Wu said as Lera turned and looked at him, "Lots of strong people came after us."
"And you are telling me this because..."
"I want you to join me in my journey," Wu said, reaching out with a hand.
"Tsk! Why should I bother with someone as weak as you?!" Fatera crossed her arms and looked to the side.
"Well, you get to fight lots and lots of strong people that will come after me." Wu said, "Ever faced off against a Sky Guardian Corp member before? We have, and we will again."
"DEAL!" Fatera shot herself onto her feet and picked Wu up by the hand, "DEAL DEAL DEAL! So, when are we fighting him?"
"It's a her actually. But...probably not for a few more seasons? I don't know..." Wu shrugged, "But you get the idea. People are going to come after me, and I am going to need capable people by my side..."
"Count me in." Fatera smiled excitedly as she drooled onto Wu's hands, "It had been way too easy for too long...I am so glad I met you!"
"We get it!" Lera shouted, breaking up Wu and Fatera when suddenly, someone strolled from outside the camp as a girl with dark blonde hair and a black eyepatch walked in.
"Oh. You." Ver halted for a moment as she caught a glimpse of Fatera, and the two girls immediately started an impromptu staring contest.
"Yeah, me." Fatera said, "Unfortunately, you are no longer the strongest one in this weak ass group."
"Huh?" Ver glanced towards Wu when he gestured towards Fatera.
"This is Fatera. She's going to be part of the squad now." Wu said.
"Huh?" Ver marched forward and pressed her fingers into Wu's chest with a frozen smile on her face, "So this is how it is? You have found a new favorite girl?!"
"Are...are you mad...?"
"No! Of course not! Why would I care about what you do?" Ver spun around and started walking out of the tent when Wu stepped forward and grabbed onto her hand.
"You have something for us, right?" Wu asked, "What is it?"
"It's about the Winter Wars, the one-on-one tournament in one month." Ver said, half-turning her head and watching Wu with a strange expression before she yanked her hand away from Wu and took out a piece of Cast, "It has been used as a way to assess the potentials of individual students for the Boarded, and thus it is the single most competitive event throughout the year."
"I am going to win it." Fatera said, "Cause that's what I bring to the squad!"
"Yeah yeah." Ver said, "But that wasn't it. Look at this."
She took out a piece of Cast written on a paper and injected a shot of Wave into it. A hologram sprung up over the paper and formed a crystallized version of a bloody rose before a voice recording was played..
"You have been invited to partake in a secret job. Come to this location before the start of the Winter Wars.. You shall be heavily rewarded upon completion. This job is off the books, so here are two hundred units as pre-payment."
"Bring it on!" Fatera laughed, "If you want to stop me from being the champion, then you need to try much harder!"
"This the work of PORA?" Wu asked, and Lera nodded as Ver tilted her head. All three of them ignoring Fatera as she laughed herself away.
"Potentially." Ver said, "I was thinking about doing this job myself, but I just want to let you two know about this."
"I should do it." Wu said, "And you three should partake in the tournaments instead."
"What?" Lera said, "That's too dangerous!"
"If you three are in the tournament itself, that makes it a lot easier to coordinate what we do." Wu said, "Remember, I am impervious to the Wave too. Also, I would like to personally see what the PORA is up to here..."
"But a weakling like ya will get roasted by the other mercs." Fatera said as Ver agreed with her new rival.
"Perhaps the me now will be." Wu smiled, "But isn't that why you are here, Fatera? Help make me stronger, and obviously let me test out a few ideas on you."
"Just don't go crying to Lera if I beat your ass." Fatera pumped her arms, "Come! Let me show ya true strength!"
