As Kint walked to the dungeon, he looked like he hasn't slept in days.
The reason being, he just got his common cold healed, and it costed him about a quarter of his life's savings, and although it was cheaper than it used to be, it was still a lot of money and he was sad.
Most of the people in the city were just waking up, and the mood was pretty relaxed. People smiling and waving to each other, kids running and laughing as merchants shout about their goods and prices. The well maintained streets and new houses showed the prosperity brought to the city by the dungeon.
Kint finally reached the stone wall around the entrence to the dungeon. He did drink an energy pill, one of the most abundant and demanded goods from the dungeon, so he was looking a lot better.
One of the many guards gave him the go ahead signal, and he entered the dungeon.
Unlike the smooth stone walls that make out the entrence, the dungeon's walls are crumbling and somehow, there is light even without any visible light source.
Kint walked around for several minutes until he found his first enemy: a ball of red, corrosive jelly (aka a slime).
As a mage, he shouldn't really be going in alone, but he really didn't have any choice. He didn't trust anyone enough to delve into the dungeon with them.
He raised his hand and launched a small fireball at the slime. The slime then proceeded to explode.
He continued patrolling the area near the entrence of of the dungeon, killing weak monsters, collecting treasure if he found any.
That was, until he saw someone with an outfit that belonged to members of an organization comprised of the greatest warriors humanity could offer.
More specifically, the robe that was worn by the green order.
The robe's color scheme consists of different types of yellow and green, made to provide a useful disguise for those who patrol the sulfuric forest.
What is the sulfuric forest you ask? Well, it's a collection of plants that can endure existing next to a ton of toxic fumes, and it has a yellow fog that can almost instantly kill your run of the mill human, and because of the color and deadlines of the fog it was named the sulfuric forest (deadly and yellow Among it just having some of the deadliest monsters on the bloody planet. There is also the home base of order green, the specialists about poison and poisonous gas, and poisonous monsters, and everything else poison related of the "wall of Terra" and it's iconic weapon is made of poisonous steel.
Their iconic weapon is a pole made of different metals (metals change as a person goes up in ranks, the strength of said metals increases the higher the rank is) and the tip is made of poisonous steel, and the tip is incredibly sharp and can also cut with it's side as well as stab with the front.
The point of this weapon is that whatever is cut by it will die of poisoning or be weakend so it can be finished off. Although the green order is one of the smaller groups of "the wall of Terra", it is very strong. So strong infact, that one of their leader can kill entire towns with a single bottle of poison (they are very good at making poison) and those from their group who don't make poison can thrash with their weapons faster then half a battalion of spearman combined. So seeing one of them here is... Odd, to say the least.
The man was reading a strange looking bunch of papers seemingly tied up together by some metal on one of the top corners of the papers.
Kint was just about to call it a day and leave, suspecting he mey still be sick, or he is hallucinating because of some monster around here (that was however very unlikely), when the man spoke.
"Hello there young man! I would like you to help me with something here, if you don't mind, that is."
He turned back to the man.
He didn't seem to want to hurt him, as if he wanted to kill him his head would already be rolling away from a quickly rotting corpse that would be the rest of his body.
Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.
Besides, he didn't really have a choice. Civilian conscription was part of the capabilities that high ranking members of the wall of Terra had, because if the situation ever comes to it, a death war for humanity's survival would require mass conscription of civilians.
So, without any other choice in the matter he went next to the man.
"No need for any honorifics if that's what you're thinking of." The man said.
Kint gave off a surprised look, before realizing that the man was probably not able to go anywhere in the city without people bowing and offering him gifts to take back to the military base to support the wall of Terra.
Their organization worked with all governments and had the ability to force said governments to refrain from wars that might weaken the human race to much. Hence why they are so popular with the civilians: they have the (well earned) reputation of the protectors of the human race, and are generally viewed as heroes all over the world
"What do you need from me?" Kint asked.
"Well, you see i was reading through this report I was given, and it seems as if the reason I was sent to this city was to protect it from something..." The man seems to be lost on thought for a second.
"Anyways, I need a guide to show me around the city. Can you do that?"
"Okay... Sure why not?"
The man smiled as they both exited the dungeon and started going around the city.
The man was closely observing every detail he could and questioned kint about possible exists to the city and the materials that each important building was made out of.
Kint smiled in his heart. The man was clearly very dedicated to the job he was given. Not that kint expected anything else, obviously.
As the day passed, the sun slowly started to set. People were going back home, stores closing, bars buzzing with activity.
The man then asked a question that was... unexpected to say the least.
"So I'll not beat around the bush and get right to the question, since I don't have anywhere to live right now..."
"I don't know of any Inn around here... I only recently moved in, and I have my own house, and I don't drink alcohol. But if you want, we can go and ask some of the guards near the dungeon. There is bound to be at least one inn near there, and the guards probably would know. If not, we can just ask some of the people leaving the dungeon."
"Well you see... I don't really have money on me. Being part of the wall of Terra doesn't pay money... We are funded by all the governments of the world, and we don't really get pay. As such, I would like to have a place to reside without needing to bank of the fact that I am part of the wall of Terra to reside in an inn without paying".
God-damned heroes with their morals I can see where this is going now...
"So I was kinda hoping I'll be able to reside with you as you are the only man I know in this town, at least until I can purchase my own house.
Kint sighed in his heart. He didn't have the money to buy another bed and even if he did it would be wasted on another bed, especially for someone who's probably not going to stay in town for more than a month, and he could probably earn enough money to buy himself a house in worst case scenario 2-3 days. Besides, he didn't know what quality bed he was used to sleeping on, and it would probably be much MUCH higher than anything he could afford.
But...
As mentioned before he was legally required to listen. So, he didn't have much of a choice.
"We'll need to buy you a bed, and I warn you, it'll probably be very low quality compared to what you're used to."
He chuckled.
"Hard for me to believe that."
Kint was confused. "How so?"
"We're a military organization you know. Our living conditions arn't as good as everyone thinks they are."
"What is it like than?"
"Well to put it simply... We live in an area where you need to make sure you don't fall into traps. The drill Sargent that makes sure we don't slack off makes sure to make traps everywhere, and once word of them got out, replace them while we're sleeping. Training is brutal, food is lacking in taste, constant missions, barley any time to sleep (our drill Sargent is an expert with creating and replacing traps)
"That's surprising."
"It shouldn't be. I don't complain much though, this is what I wanted to do in life ever since I discovered my talent in fighting."
"Why did you want to do that? I don't think you'll get much glory out of it unless you reach the top, and you said the living conditions are horrible and that the job doesn't pay money... so you warn't chasing after money or comfort. Why did you choose to do this?"
He thought about it for a moment.
"Well you see, at some point I left the village I lived in. It was undergoing an unnatural amount of attacks that I fought off, until One day the local baron sent troops to reinforce its defences.
I felt confident enough to leave, and after a sad goodbye, I left to find glory and money. I eventually managed to join the duke's guard. I was happy.
Anyways, some years later, the duke died and got replaced by his son, and he saw my preformence "unsatisfactory" so I left back for the village. When I returned, it was destroyed. There were no survivors. And, by this point it's easy to figure out what happened."
"I'm sorry for your loss."
"It's okay, I'm fine don't worry about it".
"Okay then. So, we should probably go buy you a bed soon, or at the very least order one for you to be made."
"Okay, but before that, since we're probably going to live together for a short amount of time, would you mind telling me your name?"
"Right, how could I forget! My name is Kint, hope we'll get along well. What about you?"
"My name is Magnus, and I am an elite fighter of the green order".
