Chapter 21

The moment that her eyes caught him in the moment, she could not breathe. His words were slurring, and she watched as his eyes rolled into the back of his head. Jennie lunged forward, trying to prevent Kai from falling. Kai's eyes slowly started to roll back as his body began its slow fall along the wall. Jennie held on to his body, trying to keep him up as he lost all power of his body. Monggu barked, jumping to figure out what was going on.

"Kai? Kai. Hey, hey, what's wrong?" She slowly began to shake his arm and tap his cheek. He lay in her arms, not responding to any motion. "Minji," Jennie let out a small yell, trying to pull his body into the yard. While holding on to him, she held the leash of Monggu, who chased after in curiosity. The small dog tried to pull on his shirt, trying to get a response out of his owner, the same as Jennie.

Jennie struggled as she pulled him to the door, knocking on the door to get help from Minji. She patted his face softly, trying to figure out what was wrong. She stood up, yelling for Minji as she opened the door. While she struggled to open the door, a frantic Minji came running to see what was going on.

"Wha-what happened?" She looked scared, scanning him before she tried to help by pulling him in.

"No, take Monggu and call 119." Jennie tried to hand over the leash, trying to pull Kai, but having trouble because of Monggu.

"Okay." She took the leash and pulled the small dog in before running to her phone.

The two girls were frantic, Minji trying to explain and understand what was going on so she could tell the operator. Jennie held on to Kai; she pulled his body into the home and into the living room. As the tears fell, she continued to try to help. He lay there, motionless. His skin tone was getting paler, prompting a frantic yell into the phone for the operator.

As the ambulance pulled up, the first responders rushed in. His body was pulled from Jennie's hold as she moved quickly to her feet. The two girls followed close behind, both hopping into a taxi Minji called. The trip to the hospital looked very familiar, memories flashing on the trip through Jennie's mind. The moment she went to the hospital, she wasn't alone, but she had left Kai that way. Her heart began to ache as she thought about how lonely he might be feeling and leaned forward to ask the driver to go quicker. The driver nodded in agreement and followed directly behind the ambulance, soon pulling into the hospital.

The girls rushed out of the taxi at the same moment the first responders pulled Kai from the back. The two girls rushed in, trying to follow close behind the gurney. The girls were soon stopped by the main nurse on the floor, preventing the girls from going inside any further. As they looked behind her, searching for Kai, she tried to gain their attention. Minji was the first to break, taking Jennie, who stood frozen in pace. She stayed staring at the doors he had been rolled through before she was pulled off to the side.

The girls would sit in the waiting room, Jennie stoic in her stance from the moment they sat in this very familiar place. The thoughts of her last moments being in this place were too fearful. She was worried that the same would happen. Her eyes continued to fill and swell with tears while waiting. Minji tried to keep her eye out as she watched everyone move. The nurse soon came over, speaking to Minji, who stood up and tried to follow the nurse promptly. She looked back to Jennie, who sat waiting. She would bend down and whisper the nurse's words, stimulating a reaction from her. Jennie stood, walking close to Minji as they were led through the double doors.

The young girl lay in the hospital bed, her small body unscathed while it was hooked to the IV that hung close. Her small body was holding on while doctors continued to monitor her. Soon, her eyes began to twitch, opening slowly as the room's light caused her eyes to strain. She looked around the room before gaining the attention of the nurse nearby. She motioned to the doctor, leaving the room only to shortly return with the young boy and crying woman from before. They smiled the moment their eyes met, the woman's hand tightened to prevent the young boy from running. They carefully approached the bed, the woman leaning over and kissing the head of the young girl.

"I'm so happy you are okay." The woman pushed back the young girl's hair and smiled.

"Wh-where's.." Her voice was faint, the nurses rushing to get her some water first. She took a drink, sitting up a little with the help of the woman. "Where's my mom and dad?" Her voice sounded better but still raspy. The woman in front of her looked at the young boy, holding onto her hand, before letting out a sigh.

"They're gone." She forced through, choking on her own words. For a moment, the woman held it in as best she could before clearing her throat and looking towards the young girl. The girl's face looked unsure, trying to process as she felt her hand being soothed by the woman. "Let's focus on getting you better." The woman sniffled and stood up.

"What about Yoon?" The woman tried not to look back at the young girl.

"Jennie, I can't tell you how happy I am that Tae found you." She left those words, letting them register for a moment before the woman walked out. The young boy sat in the chair next to the bed, trying to prevent himself from looking at her.

"You found me?" Her voice was shocked, looking at the young boy, his wet hair covered his face.

"I didn't see you." His words came out softly, trying to avoid eye contact. Her eyes looked at him, but they were dark and held little emotion. She laid back on the bed, resting her head against the pillow. "Are you okay?" His small voice made her roll over, her back to him.

"Yes, why?" Her body was weak, and she was trying to be careful of the IV that was stuck in the middle of her arm.

"You were sleeping for a long time." He stood from the chair and walked to the other side of the bed. The young boy looked at her, trying to analyze her face.

She did not want to ask any questions, and she no longer wished to be bothered. Thoughts began to race through her mind, the fact that she had heard the sounds but was too scared to do anything. The moment that she heard the first thump, thoughts of her sitting up in the bed began. Soon, her head began to hurt, and she was done trying to remember. Her eyes began to focus on the walls, and she could feel her cheeks grow wet. Her eyes were filled with tears, and she could still sense Tae's presence.

"Can you leave? I just want to sleep." Her voice broke, but she hoped he had not noticed. Her eyes closed, pulling the blanket up to her face until it was almost completely covered by the blanket. She heard the door open, waiting until the footsteps began to depart and the door shut loudly behind him.

-

The door shut behind the nurse, and the girls walked into the room, Jennie moving close to Kai, who lay on the bed. Jennie moved slowly towards him, thoughts flooding her memory. Now, she was the one watching as someone close to her lay in a hospital bed. She reached the bed, sitting in the chair that was positioned closest to the bed. Her hand reached out, grabbing his as she looked at his face. She noticed bandages in the same areas that she had placed them while seeing some new areas. She noticed bandages underneath his gown and on his head. Her curiosity wanted to look, but she knew that she would rather him wake up. The girls were soon greeted by a doctor. He walked in and saw the two girls standing curiously.

"Family?" The question was asked, and they nodded. "Okay, well, it looks like Kai sustained a serious concussion and 3 fractured ribs. He had a small gash in the back of his head that we were able to close. He will need to stay in bed for the next few days, but I won't release him for another few hours." He stated, looking through the chart and then back at the girls who were waiting.

"Do you know how he could have gotten these injuries?" The doctor tried to hold back his uncertain look.

"He came to our house and fainted," Minji informed the doctor, who nodded in understanding.

"Okay. Well, I will be advising that he stays in bed for the remainder of this week. I have other restrictions I will make, but the focus for now is him waking up. When he wakes up, we will monitor him." He gave a reassuring nod before exiting the room. Jennie and Minji stared at each other in disbelief.

"Did he say he got hurt?" Minji looked at Jennie curiously, and she shook her head.

"He came over. I asked him, but." Her voice dropped. She had forgotten and should have taken the injuries more seriously. She watched him lay there, his body still.
