Encounter

Raphael Valkyrie studied her opponents. Her experience told her one of them was a slime, immune to direct physical attacks, but she could use her freeze spell on that one. She had never seen anything quite like the second devil, though. Short red horns, gleaming fangs, pink skin, and those eyes...

"Should I try the weapon now?" Mary asked Jelly.

"Anytime."

Mary smiled devilishly at the angel and brought up her weapon from behind. The KV-2 Launcher was made of smooth rolled homologous metal, with a huge barrel and pulsing Tesla coils wrapped around. As soon as it was switched on, it emitted a low humming sound that increased in pitch as the whole launcher lit up with a greenish hue. The surface plates of the launcher slid open one by one, letting in ventilation to cool down the plasma generator.

"Wait!" Jelly suddenly put her hand on Mary's shoulder, then turned to the angel. "How much do you want?"

"What?" Raphael tilted her head.

"I mean," Jelly spoke up more loudly, " how much Trust Points do we need to pay you for you to leave us alone?"

"Trust Points?" Raphael had never heard of the term before. "It doesn't matter, devils. I'm here to eliminate you."

As Raphael ran towards them at lightning speed, Mary pressed the trigger of the KV-2. A huge current passed through the semi conducting barrel and propelled a gigantic shell towards Raphael, clouds of heated gas trailing behind.

Raphael leaped to one side, dodging the projectile with ease.

There was an awkward silence.

"Geez Mary, your aim..."

"I KNOW!!!" Mary's cheeks turned red. "You just watch."

Raphael looked down at the steaming shell. "Strange. I was expecting it to explode." With a gentle kick with her foot, she buried the shell under the trash-laden ground.

"It's my turn now."

Like a fighter jet breaking the sound barrier, Raphael hurtled towards her opponents.

Jelly quickly stepped in front of Mary and moved her electric blades into a defensive stance. At the same time, Mary stored away her launcher and took out a small rocket.

Raphael quickly analysed the slime's moves, dodging one of Jelly's slashes. She then somersaulted over Jelly while unsheathing a long, edgeless sword with an extremely sharp tip, almost like a huge needle.

"Take this!" Mary threw her rocket straight towards the angel.

BAM!

Mary and Jelly ducked as the rocket exploded right next to them. Dust filled the air. Their ears rang. "You shouldn't have used the guiding grenade at this range..."

Before Jelly could finish, a freezing sensation spread through her legs. She looked down to see them solidified into ice. "Behind us!"

Jelly rotated her fluid body in a full semicircle above her waist, but before she could do anything, Raphael's long sword stabbed into her throat and out the other side. Because Jelly was a slime, her body was made of a non-newtonian fluid that could be hardened or softened at will, and so the sword did no damage to her. But it was already too late for Mary standing behind her, who didn't have any time to react. The sword headed straight for Mary's left eye.

Suddenly, Raphael felt an immense force that decelerated and eventually held her attack in place. Her eyes widened when she saw that the girl behind the slime had grabbed the tip of her sword.

"You can have your energy back," Mary sent a huge electric current down the steel sword, crackling as it travelled up the blade.

Raphael immediately knew something was wrong. Her years of combat experience were the only thing that saved her, as she dropped her sword before the current reached the hilt of the blade. She back-flipped several meters away from the devils. "What an interesting ability." Raphael eyed the devil with horns with newfound respect.

Mary let go of the sword, letting it slide out of Jelly's body, and turned to stare at the angel. "Pretty smart, using her as a smoke screen."

"What are your names, devils?"

"Why should we tell you?" Mary laughed as she picked up her launcher to melt the ice around Jelly's foot. "You'd probably call for reinforcements when we meet again."

"I won't."

"Fine. Tell us yours, then," Mary smiled at the angel wickedly.

Raphael blushed. "I'm Raphael Valkyrie."

"Cool, we'll be sure to tell the others to beware of you."

"And you?" Raphael looked at the pretty devil, waiting for her name, but Mary just laughed.

"Bye, Raphael." Mary shot her gun at one of the trash heaps, and a swirling purple portal opened.

"Wait, what's your name?" Raphael asked eagerly, "I've already told you mine."

"I only asked for your name, Raphael. I didn't say we'd tell you ours." Mary flashed her one last grin, before she and Jelly disappeared into the portal.

Raphael stood motionlessly, still staring at where the two devils had disappeared from, heart racing. Slowly, she walked towards her sword on the ground, and picked it up without using magic.

She was going to remember this day for a long time.
