Heaven's Peak
Chapter 14

Chapter 14

“William, god damn it, we don’t have enough resources to deal with 10,000 people. Why on earth would you order such a thing to Atard?” Kenny was furious at the situation he was in; he was starting a scene in the police station with all the officers there to witness.

“10,100,” William said as he lay lazy on his chair, his feet on the table, and drinking his coffee without a care in the world.

“What?” Kenny asked.

“The number of humans coming to Heaven’s Peak is 10,100, not 10,000,” William corrected Kenny with an easy smile on his face.

“Are you kidding me? We are only nine officers who are about to keep 10,100 people and all the demons in line; you know it’s impossible.” Kenny said, and it seemed like other officers agreed with him; Becket saw it in their faces.

“I see,” Becket said, finishing his coffee. “You all have ten days off starting today. I got it all covered.” William continued and got up to wash his cup.

“What are you talking about, boss? How will you manage them?" Mia asked; she genuinely looked worried for Becket, and she was the only one in that matter.

“I’m the sheriff, and when I say I got it covered, I mean it. All you need to do for the next ten days is enjoy yourselves and spend some time with those you care for. Go hunting, drink beer, and read some books. I don’t give a damn; just let me be and leave now.”

“Really William? Is that how you are going to involve us as your colleagues?” Mia looked disappointed.

“Well to hell with how you deal with them. I’m going to see you in ten days,” Kenny said, putting on his jacket and getting ready to leave.

“Before you go, Kenny,” Becket got close to Kenny, and his easy smile looked somewhat more intense, as if the sheriff was forcing it on his face.

All the officers got quiet and didn’t move; they knew that look, and Kenny knew that look.

Becket smashed his clean ceramic cup on Kenny’s face, putting him down, getting on top of him, and punching until his face was bloated and covered in his blood.

No one said anything or moved until Becket felt calm.

“I’m the fucking sheriff; you will talk to me with respect; I AM THE FUCKING LAW,” Becket said fiercely.

“Joe. Drag his ass to his home and buy Kenny’s family four pizzas his kids love and medicine for his face.” Becket took out a few blood-stained hundred HP dollars from his wallet and held it up till Joe dared to go forward and get it off of Becket’s hands.

Becket got up and got to his office with no more words; others left, all except Mia. She was still concerned about how William would take control of the massive crowd but waited for him to calm down.

“OK, Becket. I ain’t Kenny, and I won’t leave until you tell me, How are you going to keep 10,100 people from all around the world in line all by yourself, and I have the right to know that?” Mia said as she got into the sheriff’s office.

Becket sighed “You won’t let this go, are you?” His eyes looked sleepless, and he yawned as he talked.

“Just tell me, William, please,” Mia said.

“I called the calvary,” Becket said, expecting the worst.

Mia smiled in shock and fear, as if her worst nightmare were coming back to life. Tears fell from her face, and she turned around and hid her face from William.

“That’s why I didn’t want you to know, Mia,” Becket said hopelessly.

“That’s why I exactly asked you.” Mia looked at Becket, her eyes full of tears and her teeth showing like a lioness, expressing a deep rage and talking with hatred. “I a little bit, just a little bit, hope that you would care about me once and have enough respect for me to never call for Hector and his savages, but no, you had to do it because...”

“Because HP needs to feed.” Becket cut through her words like a sword, sharply and quickly.

Mia took out her badge and threw it at Becket’s desk.

“You knew what he did to me and are still disrespecting me by asking him for help. Fuck you, Becket,” she said, leaving his office.

William predicted this chaotic day in the police station, but preparation is never enough for dealing with emotions. He brought his bottle of whiskey out of his cabinet, started getting drunk, and wished that this bottle would be enough to make him forget about today.
