Chapter 11 - Pursuit of Knowledge

Chapter 11 - Pursuit of Knowledge

In the dark, cold world of Gahenna, Janks and Gibson worked tirelessly to clean up the mess left behind by the intruders who had stormed into their home earlier that night. Despite their exhaustion, they knew that they couldn't afford to let their guard down. The danger in Gahenna was always present, and they had to be prepared for anything.

As they cleaned up the broken furniture and tended to their wounds, Janks couldn't help but feel a sense of determination. He had always known that he was weak, but he had always dreamed of becoming stronger. And now, after the attack, he was more determined than ever to make that dream a reality.

With that in mind, Janks headed back to the workshop, ready to finish the goggles that he had been working on before the attack. He knew that he had a lot of work to do, and he was determined to make every pair of goggles as perfect as possible. He had a sense of gratitude towards the captain for sending Reeve to protect him, and he wanted to repay that kindness by creating the goggles as fast as possible.

Hour after hour passed as Janks worked, his hands a blur of motion as he carved and assembled the goggles with precision and care. He lost track of time, completely consumed by his work. And when he finally emerged from the workshop, it was to a world that was just beginning to wake up.

Janks walked over to the door and opened it, revealing the guard who had been standing outside his workshop. The guard looked at the box in Janks's hand and raised an eyebrow.

"Fifteen pairs of goggles? You've been busy," he said.

Janks grinned. "Thanks to the carving pen the captain gave me, I've been able to work a lot faster. I figured we could use as many of these as possible. The pests aren't getting any easier to deal with."

The guard nodded. "I'll make sure these get delivered to the captain. Thanks for your hard work, Janks. You've really been making a difference around here."

Janks grinned and thanked the guard before returning to his workshop. As he sat on his workbench, he couldn't help but feel a sense of determination and purpose. The attack on his home had shown him just how vulnerable he really was, and he knew that he needed to do something about it. That's why he was determined to draft a new set of artifacts that would protect him and give him the ability to defend himself.

"The biggest problem with making artifacts is the long process to activate a rune making it unsuitable in battle" he muttered to himself as he sat down at his workbench. "What I need to do first is to do a research on how I can make that process shorter the same as how fast can a conjurer conjure their spells to do that I need to do a research on ethers"

Janks was packing up his things, preparing to leave for the Wall of Pallan. It was a massive wall that many of the residents of Gahenna hoped to one day pass through, as they believed it led to a paradise. And under that wall was a marketplace where Janks could find items created by the people of Pallan. With the money he had earned, Janks was planning on going there to purchase books and other materials that could help him understand ether better.

As he stepped out of his workshop, he was greeted by Reeve, "Where are you going?" Reeve asked, a hint of concern in his voice.

"I'm going to the Wall of Pallan," Janks replied, feeling a sense of excitement at the thought of visiting the mysterious marketplace. "I need to buy some books and materials."

Reeve's expression turned serious. "Have you forgotten what happened to your house last night? It's not safe for you to go there alone."

I'll have the guard with me," Janks said, gesturing to the man standing nearby.

"Do you think one guard is not enough?" Reeve said, shaking his head. "I'll come with you. It's not safe for you to be out there on your own."

Janks hesitated for a moment, but he knew that Reeve was right. He nodded and thanked him, grateful for the extra protection. Together, they set off towards the Wall of Pallan.

As Janks and Reeve walked towards the Wall of Pallan, Janks couldn't help but ask the question that had been on his mind for a while. "How does it feel to be strong and be able to wield Arcane?"

Reeve laughed and shook his head. "What you see is nothing, kid," he said. "I've seen much stronger people and much more powerful Arcane. Wielding Arcane isn't anything special, really. Anyone can do it. It's just that you're a special case, Janks. You were just born with a heart, not a core. Making you unable to wield Arcane."

Janks frowned, feeling a little sad. But Reeve put a hand on his shoulder and gave him a reassuring smile.

"But that doesn't mean you're not special," Reeve said. "You may not be able to wield Arcane, but you can still make a huge impact with your artifacts. I've seen what you can do, and I'm impressed. You have a talent that not many conjurers have."

Janks couldn't help but feel a sense of pride at Reeve's words. He knew that he had to work harder to hone his skills and become the best Tinker he could be.

As Janks and Reeve approached the section of the Wall of Gahenna where the portal to the Wall of Pallan was located, they were met with a bustling, crowded area. Doors of all shapes and sizes lined the walls, leading to destinations unknown. As they made their way through the throngs of people, a man suddenly appeared in front of them, a sly smile on his face.

The man had a wicked smile on his face as he fixed his cold, dark eyes on Janks. "Hello there, Janks," he said in a low, terrifying voice. "I've been looking for you."
