48. A Trial of Might and Deceit

48. A Trial of Might and Deceit

The child with raven black air looked imposing despite his young features.

However the players weren’t daunted at all. A boss was still a boss, and bosses were bound to drop a lot of good stuff. Besides, the prospect of the rewards was enough motivation to forget they were going to fight a child.

As the demon Berith looked at his charging opponents, his eyes shined with a silver spark. He glanced at the only person out of the six that didn’t charge at him, but paid him no mind.

He focused back to the players, then smirked. To rush to your foe blindly is akin seeking death. As I said before, your number does not matter. I am still stronger than all of you combined.

As he said so, a scale, akin to a mirage appeared behind him. The scale was of a blindly golden color, made worse by the sun shining over it. On the left plate, the image of a realistic heart was hovering over it. On the right was the image of a black plume instead.

He thrust his arm forward and with confidence he made a declaration. You are all weak.

As soon as the players reached the posessed boy, the scale shifted. The left plate plunged while the right one rised as high as possible.

Seeing that nothing happened to them, they did not stop and swung their weapon instead. However their face changed as soon as they made contact, for it felt as if they had hit a piece of solid steel. If it was a rock instead they could at least make a dent on it, but the boy didn’t even bleed a bit upon being hit by all of their sharp weapons.

The player weilding a dagger quickly backed off. She wanted to backstab him, but even the increased critical damage from that did nothing to the boy.

And so, she watched on in horror as the boss summoned a flaming greatword from mid-air and hit all of the stunned players around him. To her relief the greatsword disappeared after the swing.

The demon watched as the players got up from the ground. He seemed to be playing with them, like an adult humoring a bunch of kids.

This time around the players did not rush up to the boss. They examined him carefully, trying to bait some big moves, but he exerted minimal effort to deal with them.

Then, one of the players retreated all the way to the back. He closed his eyes to concentrate and after a short while his hands started to emit flames.

Berith, noticing the conspicuous movements of his opponents and how they tried their hardest to attract his attention away from the guy playing with little matches, he simply gave a low laugh.

Hehehe, I see a follower of the arcane arts amongst you. You are but too young to challenge me. Having said so, he pointed to the player gathering his magic. That magic of yours is nothing compared to a true flame.

And just like before, the image of a golden scale appeared behind him. The plate with the hovering heart symbol lowered under an invisible weight, and once again the scale displayed the same result.

Having finished gathering the fistful of magic for the fireball, the player launched it towards the boss like a baseball ball.

To his immense dismay the fireball bounced off an invisible shield before sizzling out pitfully. His disappointed face turned into an horrified one when he saw the boss creating a fireball ten times the size of the one he just made “Oh f**k. You’ve got to be kidding me”

He looked around and his face brightened up at the sight of some rubble on the side created by the earlier confrontation. He ducked behind it, avoiding most of the damage. Said damage however had lowered his Hp to a critical condition.

Thankfully he had come prepared with a few health potions, which stabilized his condition.

In frustration, one of the players howled out “This boss is immune to physical and magical attacks. How are we supposed to beat it!?”

When Frӧst laid his eyes upon the young shopkeeper, he froze in place. The familiar pressure that had prompted him to a case of breaking and entering and later lead him to be trapped underground with a peculiar granny, he felt it clearly all over his bones.

In his eyes, it was a sea of notifications that covered whatever he dared to set his sights on.

Kronus is shielding you from the foul aura.

Wisdom check failed.

Insight check passed.

Clockwork Blessing (Passive) activated.

The penalities have been alleviated.

You will be under the aura influence for 25 seconds.

A Devil is exerting its influence over the area.

You are under the influence of the ‘Masquerade Courtroom’ domain.

Berith is preparing to give judgment.

However, the more they went on, the clearer they got.

You are not the target of ‘Scales of Retribution’.

The penalities given by the abilities will be lessened.

You are inside the ‘Masquerade Courtroom’ domain.

Intelligence, Wisdom, Insight and Willpower checks will require a higher level to be cleared.

Due to the exposure to a Devil’s domain, your ability De Novo has unlocked a new effect.

De Novo

A second chance.

Be sure to use it well.

Rewind (Passive) Based on luck, status effects will have a small chance to be nullified.

There is an abysmal chance to create a miracle.

Haste (Passive) The time affecting your body speeds up. All status effects will last 50% less.

“???”

De Novo, Haste (Passive) will reduce the duration of all status effects.

It has no effect on permanent status conditions.

A new ability popping up was surprising. Moreover it was a passive. Everyone knew that all of the best skills were always passives!

‘Masquerade Courtroom’ is affecting your judgment.

A debuff will be applied whenever a check is required.

Kronus is resisting the effects of the domain.

The influence of the domain over you is lessened.

He had no idea who or what Kronus was, but he was glad that it was giving him an easier time during the boss fight.

Now that he had a clearer mind thanks to his passives, he remembered who Berith was.

He was the spirit that helped Layla with her research with the ancient civilization. He couldn’t help but wonder, why would it be called a demon by the system and why would he posses her son Kirio this time around?
