Gemstones Guide

Gemstones are very rare objects that can be magically embedded into a dragon’s body. A dragon can use the gemstone's power at any time to improve their natural abilities without them taking an additional toll on the dragon's body, until the gemstone is depleted.

Types of Gemstones: Extenders; Enhancers; Apexes

-Extenders: embedding an extender gemstone will allow a dragon to increase the duration of their natural abilities. This can be achieved by temporarily defying the natural limits of that ability (such as 'static' or 'water-storing').

Rarity: Extenders are the most common type of gemstone. Some dragon types, such as revealer dragons, are born with these gemstones naturally in their bodies.

-Enhancers: embedding an enhancer gemstone will allow a dragon to increase the power of their natural abilities.

Rarity: Enhancers are almost as common as Extenders, but Enhancers are not naturally within any dragon type.

-Apexes: embedding an apex gemstone will allow a dragon’s element to be summoned forth into any environment (such as an electric type being able to summon a storm cloud to conduct a lightning strike in an enclosed space or during clear skies), as well give their natural abilities an extremely powerful boost. However, it can only be used one time before it's depleted.

Rarity: Apexes are extremely rare and are not naturally within any dragon type.

Appearances:

Natural gemstones in revealers tend to be round or oval-like in shape, but not all Extenders or obtained gems look like that.

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

Each gemstone can vary in appearances (shape and color), so common dragons may not know which type a gemstone is until it's embedded. When it's embedded, there's a link between the gemstone and the dragon's life energy, and that connection lets a dragon identify which type it is.

Dragons who actively seek out or study gemstones can usually tell which type they are by physical contact, because they can distinguish the feel of each gemstone's power by touch.

Locations: Heavens (in ancient hoards); mountains (in mines); depths (of caverns or oceans); ruins

Use in Dragons

-Amount per dragon: A dragon can embed up to three obtained gemstones of their choosing into their body at a time. Each gemstone’s powers will stack. The dragon can also remove and replace a gemstone at any time before its power is depleted.

-Depletion: Once a gemstone’s power has been depleted, it will unfuse from the dragon. A gemstone’s power will not be restored on its own, and a dragon cannot embed a depleted gemstone. If a dragon who has embedded gemstones in their body dies, their gemstones will automatically become depleted.

-Natural: A revealer dragon’s natural gemstones cannot be unfused from their bodies, and while these gemstones can be depleted, their powers will recharge over time. The power of obtained gemstones will stack with the power of the natural ones.

-Drawback: There is a learning curve for a dragon to know when and how to use their natural abilities in tandem with the gemstone. If a dragon isn't careful, it can lead to overusing their natural abilities with Extenders, or accidentally using more power than they intend to with Enhancers or Apexes. And since Apexes are single-use, a dragon activating it at the wrong time will waste it. If they want to keep their gemstone from depleting too fast, they have to learn when they should rely on it.

Restoration: A light dragon may be able to use ‘True Light’ to restore a depleted gemstone. The rarer the gemstone, the more power it requires to be restored. Each time any gemstone is restored, it requires more power than before to be restored again, until eventually it will be depleted for good. Apexes may require too much power to restore in the first place.

Removal: An embedded gemstone can only be removed voluntarily. If a dragon with a gemstone dies, it can be removed, but its power will automatically be depleted. Therefore, it is unlikely for dragons to kill each other over gemstones that are already obtained. However, they may use other means to 'convince' a dragon with a gemstone to surrender it. Light dragons may kill others or loot a deceased dragon for any depleted gemstones they can restore.
