Lord Edward Silverwolf had expected a lot of things to happen during his Meeting with the king about hosting the princess's courting season. Receiving a panicked messager in the night feverishly ranting about a ship of dragons flying over the World's Edge mountains was not one of them. The poor man had ridden clean through the night not even stopping when it rained. Fortunately, he was carrying a letter from Captain Durwin.
The letter properly informed him what in the name of the gods was going on. Edward had great trouble believing it but knew the captain wouldn't lie about something like this. After a hastily assembled meeting of the royal council, it was decided that he should return home to both confirm this was true and access if this would be cause to change the plans for what was supposed to happen over the next couple of months at Elmsdale. Under normal circumstance, they would simply delay or move the location for a royal courting season unfortunately, they had already spent too much Coin and planned to begin too soon for this to be a practical action for anything short of war breaking out between them and the new arrivals.
Edward left first thing that morning with an escort of knights twice as large as the escort of guards he brought to the capital. He decided to leave his wife and kids in the capital just to be safe, while they claimed to only want diplomatic contact he wasn't taking any chances with his family. The long ride was quiet with no one uttering a word the entire trip, Edward was lost in thought over the possibilities of the meeting to come.
"My lord."
He was suddenly pulled out of his thoughts by a knight to his left.
"Yes what is it?"
"We weren't told very much about why we were suddenly asked to escort you my lord... does it have to do with the red dragon lying next to the wall staring at us?"
Edward turned in the direction the knight indicated to see a large red scaled dragon lying next to Elmsdale's wall. The creature's muscular front legs crossed in front of it with five curved talons on each even from this distance he could see they were razor sharp. Wings pressed to its back but with the three large claws on each could be seen sitting on the shoulders. The long tail lay on the ground next to it with short but thick spines evenly running from the tip of the tail up its' neck to the head. 2 thick horns curved over the sides of the head pointing forward and ending just before the nose. Teeth the size of short swords are visible along the length of its angular jaw, and two piercing emerald eyes watched them.
The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.
Edward took a deep breath before replying.
"Yes they are a part of the reason, it appears the World's Edge Mountains aren't actually along the edge of the world, and the peoples living on the other side decided to fly over to meet the rest of the world."
"wait so we are dealing with a nation of dragon riders?" Another knight asks.
"No, they arrived on... on, that flying ship."
Edward stares dumbfounded at the size of the thing, Durwin had said it was gigantic in his letter. This still didn't prepare him for the Veritable flying fortress before him. Four egg-shaped things are held above the rest of it by metal, two at the bow and two at the aft. The ship looked to be made entirely from metal, the sheer size of the thing, and his current distance from his location made making out any more detail impossible. Edward didn't doubt they could comfortably fit two dragons and a small army within.
"Welcome home my lord." Said captain Durwin as he road up. They were all so distracted by the dragon and flying ship they failed to notice him approaching. "I apologize for requesting you to return so suddenly, but well." Durwin motioned to the ship floating in the sky.
"Yes let us not keep our guests waiting. your letter mentioned that they had two dragons with them a red and silver. Where is the second?"
"The silver is currently on the ship itself. The envoys from the Taeldain empire await your arrival at the keep my lord."
Edward nodded, as they rode to the keep Durwin brought him up to speed on everything that had happened since he wrote the letter. Much to his relief, they had been nothing but polite and respectful since they had first arrived. Durwin genuinely believed they only wanted peaceful relations. While Edward trusted his old friend he preferred to meet them himself before passing any judgment.
The first people from the ship Edward sees is lizardmen in the flower garden in front of the keep. They are almost as tall as the horse he rides, with broad shoulders. They are clad in strange rectangular armor with gold patterns inlaid that cover most of their body. He can only see their eyes through the helmet they wear though he can guess the general size and shape of their head from the shape of the helm that seems fit specifically for their form. They are wielding large Glaives with four teeth like protrusions along the blade in one hand, with shields that block half their height in the other. They are being shown around the garden by a timid maid, several people are staring at them from the streets.
Edward doesn't watch them for long before heading to the stables to let his horses rest. After how hard they had ridden them today the poor beasts had earned it. With that taken care of, he headed inside to meet with the envoys and begin what he hopes to be fruitful diplomatic talks.
