(I wonder... What type of agency missions are there for us to take?)
Nick was curious. Without further ado, he went ahead and started to take a glance at the available request papers. But minutes later, he came up with his verdict.
It was a big disappointment.
Apparently, assignments with good pay were jobs with specific requirements, often with a reasonable demand on certain Innate Spirit. As for lower-paying jobs like woodcutting, food preparation, and others, their highest pay was merely fifteen Contribution Points a day.
Of course, if Nick or anyone else is up to the challenge, they could openly accept the mission. At most, they'll only lose out on the reward for that day. After all, there are no rules stating that only certain people can take the job. And the opportunity was given equally to everyone.
For example, an exceptionally suave or feminine male could even pass as a courtesan in the brothel as long he could be more beautiful than a woman.
(Author's Note: I'll omit further information here. Let's take things in terms of enjoyment, but not overly sexualized. After all, courtesan = entertainer. You could assume it to be companionship, speaking, chess-playing, and flower gazing related)
"Chengzi! What are you looking at?" Shen Mi Kang asked out of the concern and wrapped his arm around Nick's shoulder. The two weren't close buddies yet, but their friendliness from yesterday was more than enough to break the ice between them.
"Just looking at the job this place had. Do you know that the best one we could go for only pays around fifteen Contribution Points daily?" Nick elbowed Shen Mi Kang's chest to show he was irritated by his over-friendliness.
But at the same time, he does not hate it, either. Hence, he only hit Shen Mi Kang softly.
(When was the last I got so close and friendly with someone else?)
Nick asked himself. Reminiscing his life back on Earth, it should be over ten years since he entertained people seriously. It was a surprise that such a thought didn't even come into his mind until now.
"Why are you being overly worried? There are always better works out there. All we had to do was improve ourselves and go for it." Shen Mi Kang happily said while tightening his arm over Nick further.
"By the way, I heard the room here is all shared. Two of us are likely going to share a room together. The rental for that room was said to be a hundred Contribution Points weekly, so that's fifty per person." He continued.
"All we need is to ensure we work properly for four days a week, and that'll be enough for the rent. After all, the meal is provided, so we don't have to worry about starving." Shen Mi Kang added with his hand rubbing his belly.
Perhaps, all the walking and waiting made him hungry. Furthermore, it was about time for dinner if they were still in the refugee building.

"Looks like somebody already started looking for a job," said Rou Mian Fen as he came over with three wooden tags. And naturally, his friendly remarks made Nick and the others unsure how to reply.
"Don't worry," he added. "As a member of our Golden Expanse House, this is the spirit you'll need. You'll notice that your payment is a little low initially, but that's only temporary." Rou Mian Fen continued.
"The escort agency is always fair in their salary. After all, we must understand each other further before you're promised a high wage. And naturally, the rates would be adjusted after a period, " said Rou Mian Fen.
The concept wasn't alien to Nick since he was an employer back on Earth.
After all, he had part of the experience from interviewing a candidate to grooming and training them to become a qualified chef. But it appears that the position had now changed to him being the employee and someone else being the employer.
Furthermore, all the speaking seemed to make Rou Mian Fen forget the tags in his hand. His attention appears to be on something else, like sharing his part of the story.
"Truth be told, I had the same worry as you all when I first joined. We're not too different, as you might already know. My Innate Spirit was a Tool Spirit with Rolling Pin Base, so what kind of job can I do?"
"But yet, here I am, as a supervisor of the Golden Expanse House. While my position wasn't high, I was well-fed, treated, and respected. I believe I don't need to emphasize this, correct?" Rou Mian Fen proudly shared his story.
There's indeed some truth in his words.
On their way to the Contribution Hall, there was hardly any infighting between members, and the people's welfare appeared to be taken care of.
"From your experience, what type of job can we go for as newcomers?" Nick asked Rou Mian Fen. Being their senior here, this fellow should have plenty of working experience, correct?
"My advice for you two and Ah-Fei is different. I would suggest you both help with the canteen duty first. This assignment should be the easiest, thanks to the base of your Tool Spirit. Furthermore, I know the canteen chief and vice chief personally, and they're nice, understanding people." Rou Mian Fen said.
"As for Ah-Fei, I suggest you help with the warehouse's logistics. It is more tiring than the canteen job they're going for, but you can train your Plant Spirit quicker. After all, a Plant Spirit User is no different from trash on their starting point because of how unreliable it was."
"But again, what I said was just my piece of advice. You could naturally choose what to go for on your own if my suggestion does not interest you." Rou Mian Fen ended his words with a clean and smooth conclusion.
The trio looked at one another for a minute before making up their minds. Since Nick was the one who asked the question, he's naturally the one to reply to Rou Mian Fen.
"We'll go along with your suggestion, supervisor." Nick said.
"Good, good, good." Rou Mian Fen repeated the same word thrice. "Do not worry if you find the job unsuitable for you. After all, there are plenty of agency missions, and you can change the position you go for daily."
"But my advice is, do not let this uncertainty go too long, or you'll lose direction after a while. Always remember that out here, its real life, and no longer the pampered and sheltered life of a villager that you once had."
"Your concern would eventually come to understand the importance of cultivating resources, which is a big hole that cannot be satisfied."
"It would be too late if your realization came after a year or two. Naturally, I will guide you three tomorrow regarding cultivation when I have time. But for now, we should grab dinner, and you should hang dearly onto your identity token." Rou Mian Fen finally distributes the wooden tags to them.
Their name was engraved on the wooden token that emitted a faint greyish aura. And naturally, there's a hint of mysteriousness on that aura Nick had a problem understanding.
The trio was taken by Rou Mian Fen to the canteen next. And after having their fill, they were taken to the accommodation where Nick and Shen Mi Kang would share a room. Of course, that's after Rou Mian Fen registered Nick and Shen Mi Kang for tomorrow's duty in the canteen.
