The bakery was rather large with shelves full of cooking tins, freshly baked goods and some recipe lists. Behind the counter was a man who stood at least six feet tall and was as big as a house, not fat but extremely muscular. He had a majestic moustache covering his lip and a bald head. He wore no shirt under his apron. One customer was being served while another was just looking at the shelves. I waited in line behind a woman who looked to be rather wealthy wearing fancy clothes and some jewellery. Was this store too expensive for me?
"Next customer please!" the man yelled cheerfully.
I was starting to get the hang of the language even though I have only been studying it for a few hours, I stepped forward and looked at the bread on display.
"It's five coppers for a loaf of bread, dear."
"One loaf please."
"does your fairy want anything?" he asked with a twinkle in his eye.
up until now, no one else mentioned the fairy, so I assumed only I could see her.
"we will share the bread, can you really see her?"
"Yup, I'm originally from Japan you?"
"America, wait you were reincarnated as well?"
"Yeah, I'm an ancestral human was well, we can see things others cannot. here have a loaf on the house for the fairy, I know how stingy those gods are with the start up money."
I shook his hand and waved goodbye it was nice meeting another person who was reincarnated but strange. Sadly I did not have the time to chit chat with him as I needed to get the lay of the land.
"come by again if you need anything dear." he said twisting his moustache.
Though I had the essentials down, there was nowhere for me to stay. I only had a few copper coins left I had no chance in renting a room for the night in a large city. Having no other choice, I walked to the entrance of the town where a few guards were standing. Maybe a small village will have cheaper rooms.
"excuse me, where is the closest village to here?"
I asked, and one of the guards turned around. He was an ugly man whose face looked to be sunken in from lack of food. He walked towards me with lust in his eyes. Clearly, he wants to give me more than directions.
"About an hour that way but if you need a place to stay why not my place, the beds nice and warm?" he said and wrapped his arm around my shoulder.
"No thanks creep."
I moved his arm off my shoulder and began to walk away. But he grabbed my arm and spun me around.
"don't walk away from me bitch!" he snarled.
"Unless you want to lose that hand I would take it off my arm."
He pulled me closer to his body and held my arm tightly.
"You hear that boys my hands going to come clean off!" he laughed.
As I began to draw my sword, the tall, muscular baker walked behind the man and placed his hand on the guard's shoulder. Sweating bullets, the guard turned around slowly, and the baker's face was only a few inches away from his own.
"c-captain, fancy seeing you here." he stammered letting go of my arm.
"whats going on here?" he asked cheerfully
"n-nothing I was only giving this woman directions."
The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
"Oh is that so? well, sweetie is this correct?"
I slid my sword back into the sheath.
"Of course, he was very nice."
"ah well good if it were any other way I may have cut his hand of myself." he laughed; obviously he knew exactly what happened.
The man slithered back to the side of the gate he came from and didn't say another word. Though the baker looked jolly, he was scary when he needed to be. As I began to walk in the direction the guard told me the baker followed behind me. Normally a woman should be worried when a strange man starts to follow her, but the way he dealt with the guard showed he had to bad intentions. I also had a hunch that he wasn't interested in women.
"so what is your name baker? also, why did you follow me?" I asked
"My name was Shime Makoto, but now I am Otto Riegel Captain of the guard and baker on my days off. Oh, and I followed you because you forgot your faries bread. Whats your name?"
He answered, handing me a paper bag with a loaf of bread in it.
"Thank you. My name was Erik Reid; I don't have a new name yet."
He went quiet for a short while with his baseball glove sized hand rubbing his chin. Clearly, he was thinking of something.
"how about Aubrey Reid, or Aleksandra?" he asked looking pleased with himself.
"Aleksandra sounds nice, let's go with that."
The trip to the next village over was quite long and tiring. But we made it safe and sound, but the streets were deserted not even the sound of dogs barking broke the silence that engulfed this place. Both me and Otto looked at each other and began looking through each house separately. A lot of the furniture was set perfectly in most of the houses, so this wasn't a bandit raid on the village. What happened?
"This doesn't sit right with me." Otto said pulling a pair of iron studded gloves out of his apron pocket.
"what do we do?"
"you head back to town I'm going to stay and check what happened around here."
I was inclined to listen to him; once I make it back to the town, I could bring him some help. I turned around and was about to head back when the fairy jumped into my satchel.
"something big and evil is coming."
She said with her head poking out. The ground beneath us began to shake, and a large circle with a star and strange symbols began to glow read under our feet. The strange circle was large enough to cover the entire village. The ground started to bulge at the centre of the circle. Something large was coming out of the ground a large clawed hand emerged from the ground. Otto backed up slowly and hid me behind him. He was in a boxers stance, did he plan to box whatever was coming. Slowly the full body of the creature emerged from the ground. It was an ugly creature that stood on two legs with a furry body large clawed hands and the head of a lion.
"son of a bitch, it's a demon. whatever you do, do not use magic on it!"
"But the only other thing I have is a small sword, and that thing is at least fifteen feet tall!"
"just stay behind me I will show you some tricks my God showed me."
His hands began to glow, looking closely there were some strange symbols drawn on the back of the gloves. Is it an enchantment of some sort? His feet began to glow as well, the boots he wore looked like military boots from earth and had the same strange symbol drawn on them. Otto leapt into the air with incredible force causing the ground beneath him to crack. He cocked his arm back and landed a massive blow on the demons head causing it to stumble and fall to the ground. But the fighting wasn't over in one hit, the creature began to get up, but Otto was close by to rapid fire some punches into the side of the demon. The final blow Otto did caused the beast to go flying into some of the nearby buildings. Otto seemed to be tired after only giving a few hits.
"Hey girly, I don't know how many more hits I can deal, these enchantments drain my stamina fast. figure out what you can do or run to the town."
"I only know how to make a fire ball."
Otto let out a slight chuckle.
"funny enough fire magic is the only magic that hurts demons."
Aren't demons from hell? Well, whatever the case I can be of some help in this fight. I put my fingertips together and created a small fire ball. The demon seemed to have recovered from its fall and began to get up, as soon as its head appeared over the building in front of me I lobbed the ball of fire directly at its head. Right as the ball hit the beasts head it erupted into a massive explosion. Otto had a stunned look on his face.
"Are you tired after that?"
I shook my head and prepared to throw another one. But the demon wasn't moving, in one hit I managed to kill it. Otto went over to check it was dead. He came back with a pocket full of demon claws. I gave him a funny look.
"They fetch a decent price on the market, here is your half. Is that what your God showed you before he sent you here?"
"Yeah, he said I had a lot of mana for a human."
"Saying a lot is an understatement, I would say an absurd amount."
"so why was there a demon here?"
"hmm, considering all the people disappeared I would say a summoner absorbed their souls and used them in a summoning ritual."
Summoning rituals and demons, this world has a lot in store for me. The sun began to set so we decided to sleep in one of the abandoned houses for the night. I got the bed in a small room that presumably was inhabited by the child of the family and Otto took the master bed since his body was so massive he wouldn't be able to sleep in this tiny bed even though he offered to do so. I slowly drifted off into sleep, my first night in another world and I already fought a demon I wonder what the future holds for me.
