Chapter Five: The Council

Chapter Five: The Council

Stepping over the threshold I was inside the castle grounds. Many of the bushes and flowers around the courtyard were withered and dead. The castles turrets were crumbling and in need of some repairs. The water coming out of the fountain looked like dirty swamp water. Otto walked at my side looking at everything in disrepair.

"Why is everything in such poor shape?" I asked.

"The war has taken its toll on the city, I don't know about the kingdom's coffers, but most people in this town can't even afford a slice of bread. like that rich looking woman who was in front of you at my bakery, she has a family of three and can hardly afford their basic needs; I help them when I can."

At a quick glance of the town, you wouldn't be able to tell they had been hit by such hard times. Most of the people seemed to be happy. The statues in front of the Castle seemed to be the only things completely intact. On a closer examination, the figures depicted past kings. Each had a plate on the base of them that read their names and what power level they reached before dying. The strongest king to rule was called Robin Sweet, with the power level of Champion of light. The rest of the plate was covered in dirt.

"How strong is a champion of light?" I asked Otto while crouching down to wipe off the dust.

"They are worshipped as gods and are capable of toppling a kingdom all by themselves."

The dust fell off with one swipe of my hand. To my surprise, the rest of the plate showed that he was an Ancestral human that appeared out of nowhere. If he was an ancestral human, maybe he was still alive. I got my hopes up though because once I continued to read it showed that he died while fighting the king of the holy empire.

"fairy, whats the holy empire?"

"the strongest nation on this continent said to be able to shape the world in any way they want. Didn't God give you a book about everything, shouldn't you read it."

"too much reading, easier to ask you."

Fairy then flew into my satchel ignoring me. As we continued towards the castle a knight in glorious gold armour stepped out from behind the main door. He had slicked back brown hair, gorgeous blue eyes and a chiselled jaw. I started to day dream while staring at him, slowly undressing him with my eyes.

"uh, your majesty?" the knight said snapping me back to reality.

"yes, what is it?"

"I am Julian Lorem the new captain of the knights."

You have to be kidding me his last name means sexy in Latin. Wait why did he have a Latin last name?

"you seem to have a strange last name."

"yes well, my father was from a kingdom far away."

Was it possible he didn't know his dad was reincarnated? Maybe he knows and just doesn't want to sound crazy in front of the new queen. Whatever the reason I should be careful around him.

"What is it you needed captain." I said straightening my posture and getting rid of all lude thoughts.

"I wished to greet my new queen and formally lead you into the throne room."

He bowed his head and began to walk into the castle. The inside was nice and cool the stone kept the cold air insulated nicely. The outside may look as if a bomb hit it, but the inside was fabulous, with stone archways and ornate glass windows with a sun design stained into them. Entering the throne room nearly knocked the wind out of my lungs. Not only was the room massive but the drapes covering the windows complemented the gold and red throne. The statues lining the walls looked to have been sculpted by master crafts men, and there was the skull of a dragon hanging above the throne.

"how much is everything in here worth?" I whispered in Otto's ear.

"I'm only guessing here but a few hundred platinum coins most likely."

His face was struck with awe. There are twenty copper coins to a silver coin, and five silver coins to a gold coin how much gold is needed to make a platinum coin?

"You should take a seat while I gather your counsel."

Julian said bowing so deep he was nearly kissing his own feet. I sat down on the throne while still flabbergasted by everything around me. The throne was on an elevated platform with a short marble staircase leading to it. I looked at the ceiling, and it looked as if it went on forever it was so high. I was snapped out of my mesmerization by the sound of a dozen or so pairs of footsteps heading this way. A group of men in silky clothes walked in with big fake smiles on their face.

"good afternoon my liege." one said with a slight nod of the head.

"I am the Chamberlin; I manage all household affairs and coin of the kingdom." a short, fat, greasy looking man said in a voice that sounded almost sickly.

"I am-"

I held my hand up before another person began talking. So this man was the reason the castle was in such disrepair, and the citizens were deprived. I pointed my finger at the bottom of the steps to the throne ordering the man to stand there.

"what do the kingdom's coffers look like?" I asked leaning forward.

"Well as of right now we have twenty platinum coins at our disposal."

"Only twenty? well, that's weird, how much are all these decorations worth?"

"About two hundred platinum coins my liege."

"Hmm, strange, the money spent buying these bobbles could have fielded an army. who is responsible for this?"

I could tell he knew where this conversation was going. He swallowed his saliva out of nervousness.

"The Duke had expensive tastes my liege."

"Strange I didn't know the Duke was in charge of the coin? Is it not you who guides the ruler so he can make sound decisions?"

"Of course I offered him counsel, but he never took my advice."

"I have no need for a spineless man who can't even keep the coin we make. you may be gone."

The man looked shocked and was lost for words.

"How, how dare you!" he shouted with his face turning bright red.

I intend to get rid of all the people on this council and replace them with people I trust so I understood why he was upset. If there was one thing I was good at it was history, and most rulers in history have been manipulated by their fellow nobles in some way. So I couldn't go soft I must emphasise that I am the queen.

"How dare I? How dare I what? Rule a kingdom with people I can trust and find dependable not someone who folds at the slightest threat."

He then stormed out of the court fuming mad muttering a few prophanities under his breath. I pointed at the next man and ushered him forward.

"You are?"

"Herius Ruso, at your service. I am one of the men who will be sitting on war councils, and I lead the guards."

"I thought you were the captain of the guard Otto?"

"I am, but I need all my plans approved by him."

"ah, so you are the reason most of the guards stand around town all day and aren't spread out evenly among our villages and town."

"I deemed the capital more important to defend my liege."

This was the type of person I hated the most. He only cares to impress his betters and not think about the little people.

"Oh, so the entire village that was killed just the other day means nothing to you!"

"of course not my liege I only-"

"Everyone leave, I have lost my good mood. Where is my room?"

Julian lead me to the former king's bedroom. The bed was massive covering a large chunk of the room. The cabinet is stood about 8 feet tall. I would need to buy new clothes to fill it up. It was too early for me to sleep, so I came here to change my clothes. I pulled a different pair of clothes out of my satchel, changed and left to meet with Otto.
