Chapter 16: Part 1: Fate Is A String

At a turn of a hallway, I saw a massive open room and a man with horns covered in black at the center.

“I’ve been expect-”

“-Shut up.”

The demon lord laughed.

“Appraisal!”

Locked! Target has Skill: Appraisal resistance!

“No! God-Seeing-Appraisal!”

Level 100 - /////////////////: Demon Mal//////////ears old

Titles: ////mon Lord, Merciless, /////////////////er/////////////////—---

Skills: Legen///////kill - Foresight, Max-Level Death magic, Hig/////evel Curse magi/////////////—---

“Huh?”

“What?”

“I can’t even appraise him fully?!?!?”

Mel was in a panic.

“Haha, it looks like my powers are now on the level of the gods.”

“It’s just the level difference, you're spewing nonsense.”

He stood up from his throne.

“Let’s get this over with.”

“Let’s.”

As a cloud of mist appeared around his hand slowly taking the form of a sword, I took my sword out with my right hand and held a book in my left.

“A book? Where did you get that from?”

“The wizard tower, it can reflect a spell, but only once?”

“You’ve been planning for this since then? Also should you be saying that?”

“It doesn't matter, he already knows what happens if he uses death magic.”

“You’ll reflect it and kill me instead. I understand the rules.”

“Ayla, I’ll buy as much time as you need.”

“But… I’m not even sure what I need to do.”

“You’ll be fine.”

“Will you?”

“Don’t worry, this isn’t anything new to me.”

I looked back at the demon lord now with his pitch black sword out, black flames were rising up from it.

“Have you finished?”

“Do I need to answer?”

He bolted at me and sliced in one movement.

“Sacred water slash.”

I parried the sword to the left. Nothing had changed since my last fight. He went for a follow-up as I jumped back.

“Dash.”

The only way I could keep up with the insane movements were with the repeated use of skills.

“Slash.”

Another parry. I couldn't take a single hit.

“Slash.”

It didn’t matter. The only option was not getting hit. He seemed to get bored of normal attacks fairly quickly.

“Meteor shower strikes.”

A barrage of stabs flew around me. Each with the power of a falling meteor.

“Slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash-”

There was only just enough air in my lungs to parry for the whole duration of the skill. I took a glance and saw Mel talking to Ayla while she was preparing a spell.

“You’ve got to hit him! I know Rein is strong but I don’t know how long he can last…”

Ayla pointed at the demon lord.

“Holy bolt!”

A bolt of light flies towards him as the demon lord swatted it out of the air like a fly without looking before resuming his attack.

“Uh… It’s not working!”

“Triple: Holy bolt!”

The unfazed Ayla shot another three bolts at the same time. He stopped them with one hand and I jumped forward at the opportunity.

“Slash!”

With the other hand he stopped my full force with the sword. I slid under it and kicked him in the legs which he also blocked. I jumped back as he regained all of the lost ground.

“Nothing this weak can hurt me…”

He said as he bashed his sword into mine. Ayla stopped and prayed for a moment.

“Holy… Judgment!”

A beam of holy light came from above and engulfed the demon lord. When it faded there wasn’t even a scratch on him.

“Uhh… If holy magic doesn’t work… Do you have any other types of magic?”

“Only spirit magic… but it’s the lowest level…”

“Spirit magic…?”

Mel looked on to me barely surviving blow after blow. I looked back at her.

“Mel! WAIT!”

I didn’t have the luxury to call out to her right now.

“You know… I’ve always felt useless… Not being able to help Rein in anything…”

“MEL STOP!”

She ignored my plea.

“Mel? What’s wrong?”

She smiled at me while looking into oblivion.

“I, the spirit Melphelia, wish to turn my life force into power…”

“I trust your fine with this outcome then?”

The demon lord stopped attacking as Mel started to fade into sparks of light…

“NO! I’M NOT, MEL!”

“Mel? What are you-?”

He sat back down on this throne, watching this whole thing play out.

“I hope I’m not a worthless fairy anymore…”

Ayla ran up to her while Mel disappeared into dust. Ayla dropped to her knees. The crystals of mana fell onto her with her empty arms out below and an empty look on her face.

“Im sor-... no… Thank you, Mel.”

“Mel… Why…”

A screen popped up in front of her.

Skill level temporarily increased!

Low-Level Spirit magic -> God-Level Spirit magic

Ayla stood up with a determined look on her face.

“Spirits, I call upon your power, I-”

She suddenly stopped and blood fell out her mouth.

“Ayla??”

A voice came from behind her.

“I did it! My lord, I killed the princess!”

Ayla fell down to the ground as a certain demon took out her bloodied dagger from Ayla’s back.

“Liz?”
