“It’s my unique skill.”
“I know that much, what does it do?”
“It’s fairly self explanatory.”
“But seriously, I want to hear it from you.”
“...Well, if I don’t want to die, I can come back from when I acquired that skill while losing everything but my memories.”
“And that’s why after all I’ve seen, you don’t fear death?”
“...”
“But if you do, would anyone else even remember you?”
I shrugged.
“Look, I’m not an idiot, okay? I can see by the way you talk and move, you’ve already done this before. That’s what you mean by me figuring out what your past life was, right?”
“Yeah.”
“And that’s how you knew how to bring me along?”
“Yeah…”
She put on a more serious face than ever before.
“Please tell me sooner next time!”
“I… can’t do that to you.”
“Why?!?”
I stayed silent for the rest of the night. As the sun rose I finished up another energy bun, I was going through them at a higher rate now.
“Good morning!”
“Morning.”
Ayla woke up just as the demon capital came into sight.
“We’re already here?”
“Yeah.”
The silhouette of the castle towered above the rest of the city, it was a massive structure displaying to the world the power of the one who lived within. We were now directly above it.
“I’ll call the bird back once I’m finished. Mel, tell me if anything happens.”
“Roger!”
I dived down to the streets and jumped off. Ayla and Mel were still in the sky, where it was hopefully safe. The street I was on was empty except for one person walking down it, headed for the castle behind me.
“Wait.”
The same red eyes looked back at me.
“Rein? How did you get here?”
“I flew, I can’t use your teleportation circle after all.”
This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it
“How do you…?”
“I’m going to have to ask you to not report this to your boss.”
“My boss? What do you mean-”
“-The demon lord.”
Liz reached under her cloak as I opened my storage.
“Well, if you know that much…”
She held a few purple knives at the back of her hand.
“I can read the future, just like the demon lord.”
She threw a knife at my throat to which I threw a knife back, hitting it out of the air. Both fell to the floor.
“You're about to throw five more.”
She proceeded to throw all of them in her hand which I deflected with the five knives I had left.
“How?”
“I have plenty more of those, you can’t kill me with that.”
“Maybe you… can…”
Liz walked closer to me while maintaining eye contact.
“Do you have any proof?”
“What do you want?”
“Tell me. Where is my family?”
I reached into my storage and handed her a folder with a stack of paper inside.
“What’s this?”
“Page 37, line 12, your brother died while a slave.”
She blankly stared at it.
“Your sister as you know is being held by the demon lord himself.”
She looked up at me with a face lacking emotion.
“He isn’t going to free her.”
“...”
“After all, she’s the only reason you do as he says.”
“You're telling me to leave her to die?”
“I’m telling you the facts.”
“...Okay, say I believe you, what do you want me to do?”
“Only to not go see the demon lord, without betraying me. I promise to get your sister back.”
“If you can read the future, you already know my answer.”
I turned around and again made a figure and blew into my hands, another green magic circle appeared and a piercing whistling sound came out to call the hawk. I looked back and Liz wasn’t there. I walked to the palace gates, open, without a guard in sight. The hawk landed next to me on the castle grounds and Ayla hopped off with Mel on her shoulder.
“I, Rein, wish to end this contract.”
A green circle around its neck shattered. The hawk took one last look at me and squawked before taking flight.
“Thanks, Ivtred…”
“Is it okay to let them go like that?”
“Yeah, they deserve a break after all that.”
“So, Rein, what’s the plan?”
Ayla asked first.
“Simple, kill the demon lord before he can kill anyone else.”
“You're saying that like you don’t have a plan.”
Mel took over the conversation.
“If I do, the demon lord will see through it.”
“So we’re just running in with nothing then?”
“Don’t worry Mel, I’m sure it will go fine.”
A beacon of positivity came from Ayla.
“I guess we can only hope.”
I walked forwards into the palace.
“Why are there no guards? This is creeping me out.”
“The demon lord knows there isn’t any point in needless deaths.”
“Hey, he seems like a reasonable guy, have you tried-”
I looked back at her.
“It isn’t possible.”
She seemed to be taken aback by the conviction in my voice.
“Your only level 54, are you sure this is the right time to fight him when he’s almost double your level?”
“What would I level up for? Do you know of a skill that could help here?”
Mel was silent.
“I know I’ve tried everything. But the fact is, I can’t hurt him. It’s said the only way to kill someone with a legendary skill, is someone with one themselves. It’s like… fate.”
“Rein…”
Ayla grasped onto my hand through her glove.
“Let’s do this!”
I smiled.
“Yeah.”
