Chapter 31; Really Big Spiders

Chapter 31; Really Big Spiders

An explosion tore down the path as Ander used the rushing wind of his fireball to move even faster. He was in a similar situation as when he fought Cormal, and he didn’t like it. His leg was still burning with the poison and it was all he could do to keep conscious as he flew down the hallway.Ander made a turn at blinding speed, catching his momentum with his good leg on a wall and leaping down another hallway. He was trying to move toward the stupid relay node, but every time he got close more spiders would pop up. He had predicted that the spiders would be between levels 30 and 33, and he couldn’t be more wrong. The closer he got to the node, the bigger and meaner they got. Ander let off low power fireballs from his hand like a gatling gun, burning through his mana so he wouldn’t take another hit. Spider after spider died as he used all the burst damage in his repertoire, following with spear or sword if he felt he could afford it.

Ander charged a fireball to full strength and threw it down the passageway behind him, catching thirty or so lower level spiders that had been in pursuit. Half died, and Ander groaned in pain of both body and soul to see all that experience go to waste. Ander carried himself forth on the blistering tide of his fireball, searching for a staircase down. Ander searched and searched, and his mana dipped below half. If he didn’t find it now, he had to leave.

In frustration, Ander cast Wind Blade and started to hack at the floor. Deep gouges appeared, but the stone was thick and resilient, taking precious moments as the horde of spiders drew closer. Ander threw another maximum fireball and watched in dismay as three spiders seemed to completely ignore the attack. Their carapace was shiny and metallic, entirely devoid of the hairs that adorned most spiders of the type. They rushed forward as Ander made the final cut and fell down into the next floor.

Ander staggered to his feet and ran again, relying on the wind more than his legs to keep him going at this point. Ander navigated the maze that was the ruin as he got closer and closer to the relay node. He burst into a large room and nearly collapsed when he saw what awaited him. A giant spider, nearly 20 feet tall, was busy making repairs to a giant web. Ander could see giant egg sacs littered around the floor, and on the other side of the room floated a blue crystal. It was a boss room. Anyone with eyes could see it was a boss room. The metal spiders from before were no longer following, and Ander knew why. The giant spider lept from its web and landed on the floor before him shaking the entire room with it.

There was no windup, no cool music, no announcer when the spider struck. Ander leapt out of the way, only for his bum leg to be utterly destroyed from the knee down as the spider’s first attack landed. Ander threw fireball after fireball as he activated inspect.

Level 45 boss

Ander’s eyes bugged out as he managed to successfully dodge the second strike. The strike hit one of the egg sacs and a ton of tiny spiders were sent flying in every direction. One landed on Ander and bit, delivering a dose of venom into his side. Ander crushed it with prejudice, but the damage was already done. He could feel the venom weakening him, slowing him down when he could not afford to be slowed. Ander flexed his Aeolian Vitality skill, and felt the small amount of poison be neutralized but at the cost of nearly half his remaining mana.

Ander had no hope of defeating this creature, which meant that he would have to flee and use the node in the town. But as he made a beeline for the entrance to the room, the spider spun and shot a blob of webbing that covered the door entirely. Ander dodged as he tried to think of a way out, narrowly escaping each time as the legs of the spider smashed into more egg sacs and into walls, which had a tendency to break with repeated hits. Ander stared at the relay node and noticed a small alcove behind it. Ander didn’t know if the alcove was a tunnel or a small depression in the wall, but either way, it was his way out. Ander jumped, propelling himself to the ceiling and baiting out an attack. There were no eggs here, which meant that the spider was only attacking the ceiling when he managed to dodge. After three hits, the ceiling fell.

Ander sprung off the falling debris and hurtled toward the relay node beneath him. Ander grabbed the crystal and hit the ground rolling uncontrollably into the alcove. A giant boom sounded out as the ceiling fell. The cries of the spider boss were clear as day as she moaned in pain. But lucky for Ander, she had not seemed to notice where he went. Ander slid his way deeper into the alcove, which was sadly not a tunnel out. The spiders had blocked it up and good. His wind sense could sense a barrier nearly 20 feet deep, giving Ander only five feet of hallway to rest in. On the other side, the fallen debris had capped the alcove, but far more thinly than on the inside. Ander could see the mother spider moving pieces of debris around, trying to save her spiderlings.

Giant Mother Tarantula

Level 45 boss

Health 53%

Ander started in surprise as he saw the new information. The ceiling had taken nearly half its health away. Maybe there was a chance to defeat it. Ander looked to the relay node in his hand.

System Relay Node

Type; Dungeon

Administrator privileges recognized.

And suddenly, a dozen windows popped up in real space, overloading Ander with information about the so called dungeon. As Ander searched, he found he couldn’t change much. Every time he tried there was an error message saying ‘Dungeon run in progress. Please wait until the boss is defeated or the adventurers leave.” But he did glean some important information. This was an unsupervised level 40 dungeon with a recommendation of five adventurers minimum. However, with the boss at level 45, the dungeon’s level was soon going to increase.

Ander gathered that the Relay Node was a mana battery that constantly drained power from it’s surroundings. While it seemed originally made for class changes, when it was not visited often enough, it had to use the power somehow. Thus when a monster touched it, the monster would get the change instead, and be turned into a boss. The charged mana would then be released in a designated area, causing the area to become a dungeon. It was a safety feature to keep the thing from exploding from mana overcharge.

Lord of the Skies

Subterranean Gale

Progenitor of the Healing Winds

Legendary

Ander started to salivate as he looked at the options. Obviously he would not be taking any of the first three, but he checked them just in case. The two Elemental Mages were pretty straightforward. They both gave good buffs to the element in question, as well as reducing the mana required to cast spells of the right type. It would be cool, given that he could be the only true caster class in three thousand years. But to be honest, Karsish would choose a caster class, though one decidedly bookish. It wasn’t worth it to choose a pure caster class since neither of the ones on offer made use of his two legendary skills.

Sky Pirate was also quite self explanatory. It used his wind based magic and skills, but was decidedly boring otherwise. The real clincher was that it required a captain to be a subordinate to. Why it didn’t offer sky pirate captain, Ander had no clue. But that made it a hard pass.

That left his three legendary options. Lord of the Skies significantly expanded the range of his wind control, and made wind based skills and spells both cheaper and easier to use. It was heavy on flight, and promised that particular ability far sooner, stacking with the flight from Way of the Wind to gain increased control and speed.

Subterranean Gale promised way more control over his volume of wind, allowing him to make maneuvers that never would have been possible before. But what was really interesting was that it made use of the constricting nature of the tunnels Ander was in to deliver super powerful attacks. The wind would become an extension of Ander, eventually turning him into more elemental than man.

Progenitor of the Healing Winds was the only option based on Ander’s second legendary skill, Aeolian Vitality. It was a wind-aspected healing class, and quite the powerful one. He would be able to heal an army all at once while protecting himself on the battlefield. It was a good class. Probably the most powerful one on the list depending what you were looking for. Ander read the description and immediately discounted it. A healing skill was more than enough for him. He had no desire to pivot.

Between the other two options, Ander knew he was going to pick Lord of the Skies. Subterranean Gale was good, but Ander wouldn’t be in the tunnels forever, and practice would give him the control he wanted. He gave them a good look one last time, and then confirmed his choice.

Everything went black. Ander was standing in the void, looking at his soul, crammed full of different skills. Suddenly he started to accelerate toward it, and when he hit, his entire soul collapsed. There was an explosion of blue and white, and Ander was standing on a small platform, endless sky all around him. Puffy clouds floated by, partially obscuring the wonder that stood before Ander.

Ander looked at a series of white marble platforms floating in small clusters. They differed quite significantly from one another, from simple small rocks on one end to platforms over a hundred yards wide. Ander started forward, but there were no bridges, no way across. But Ander knew what this class was about, and willed the wind to carry him to the next platform. It did so with the barest thought, the wind responding to Ander’s call like a puppy seeing its master for the first time in a week. Ander came to the next platform. It was bare except for an intricate design in gold on its surface. The gold was tinted a dark shade, and Ander knew that this was Minds of the Void. Ander flew from platform to platform. The rocks represented skills he had not properly defined while back in the void. Most of those were too small to become real skills, and so they remained rocks with designs on the surface.

Ander moved on, coming to Way of the Wind, which was very close to the center. A small wind elemental danced atop the skill, giving Ander deference when he passed. Ander knew that the integration of the elemental with his soul was not yet complete. He needed to focus on that some time soon.

Ander then went to the centermost platform. It did not have a skill, but an ornate throne depicting the four winds. Ander sat, and bright light washed over his soul.
