Chapter: 3 Wolves Verse Knights

I curse all the damn wolves inwardly. Why are they so annoying every few days? I would just be minding my own business when one or two of them would try to kill me. But I managed to get away each time and even kill a level two one. By hiding in a bush and jabbing my knife into its underbelly before yanking it out and stabbing it in the head.

Like before they all went in agility putting it up to fourteen. I had managed to survive off eating the berries of these small bushes. The berries were a very bright pink and also very delicious. Because of this I had to get what I could before the rabbits and other wildlife got them. I also sustained myself off more meat from the packs of more dead people I found. I also collected all their canteens to fill up with water but none of the other corpse’s had anything apart from food and water. One corpse had a bow clutched in its hand with a quiver of twenty three arrows strung across its back. I had tried to use it to hunt for food a few times but each time I missed. On one attempt I ended up losing one of the few arrows I had.

“Hmm”

It leveled up! I had know idea how to level it up but I did! What could it do now? But anyways back to the rabbit.

It was a large grey rabbit. It was sleeping right at the entrance of a rabbit burrow. Using [Silent movement] I had managed to get close enough so that I was only a few meters away. Quietly I grasped my bow in my hands before drawing back an arrow. I aim for a few seconds. My hands start to ack and my strength begins to wane as I draw back the arrow as far as I can. I take a breath right before letting it go. The arrow whooshes through the air. The arrow hits the rabbit not going exactly where I wanted it, which was the neck but instead hitting it right in the chest. As I move to finish it off and before it can get into the burrow I get a notification.

How did that work? A level two wolf was stronger than that! Maybe it’s because of its race but still it was over twice the level of anything I had killed up till then and it was far easier than anything else I killed! But at least I leveled up. All the points went to agility again putting it up to seventeen. Now that my agility was over twice as high as it was originally I felt so much faster but I was worried about the fact I would have to upgrade other stats as well at some point. Otherwise I would avoid all the attacks but do no damage back.

It felt like I was so close to leveling up all I had to do was find one or two more rabbits and I would finally reach level four. Hunting rabbits also gave me enough food to survive. I had managed to figure out how to light a fire but the food was always charred.

“Thump thump thump”

A loud thumping sound echoes through the woods instantly putting me on edge. Seconds later there's a scream.

“AAaaaaaaaa”

A scream not like any I had heard before could it be one of those humans?

I drop down from the tree I had been hiding in landing in the grass with a light thud. I silently creep towards the scream. It is coming from the deeper parts of the woods where screach’s and growls tear through the air. Shoving all worry to the side I head towards the sound of the scream. As I get closer I can hear the sound of combat. The curses of the thing I think might be human. As I reach the clearing, instead of going in, I enter a large bush then I lean forward to see what is happening. A massive beast stands inside the clearing.

It’s horrible, it is terrifying how is anything standing up to that beast. Even if there’s a group of them it should be still impossible. Inside the clearing well that might be an understatement. It was more of a small field being a few hundred meters in each direction. On one side of the clearing stands a group of what I assume are human knights. They valiantly stand in a line ready to protect the weird thing behind them. It is made entirely of a dark grey wood. It has a flat roof and four wheels, one at each corner. Across from them stands a wolf of titanic proportions. It is at least five times the size of the wolves that keep attacking me and looks at least one hundred times as dangerous. It has pure snow white fur and a long shaggy tail. That's all I can see because it is currently turned away from me eating someone's corpse. Everyone waits in a baited silence as it eats too terrified to move or talk.

The Wolf finished with its meal turns towards the carriage and howls

“OOOOOooooooooooo Oo Oo OOOOOOoooooooooo”

The howling echoes around the clearing and beyond. We all wait in silence. Then there's the soft thudding of paws running along the ground. Wolves much smaller and around the size I had been killing enter the clearing along with some bigger ones. This time I knew. There was no way the humans were getting out of this.

The giant wolf turns towards growls at the humans before pouncing just as I identify it.

[??? - Lvl.???]

Oh no.

“Defend the carriage!” one of the knights screams lunging forward.

[Knight - Lvl.???]

The giant wolf swipes one of its front paws. His head goes flying in a spray of blood. The knights all take a step back in fear. One human steps forward. But unlike the others in armour he is wearing some sort of crimson red robe. He raises his hand.

“Flaming barrage” he yells, hand still outstretched.

All around him little balls of fire pop into existence before hurtling towards the wolf.

“I already called for backup, all we need to do is survive until they arrive” The robed person yells. I identify him.

[??? - Lvl.???]

The knights cheer. But they stop when they see the giant wolf leap over all the fireballs before howling again. More and more wolves arrive. The only reason they have not found me is because they are on the other side of the clearing.

The wolves all in an instant ready themselves and leap towards the knights.

The knights ready themselves. Swords, spears, axes and more weapons which I don’t know of are clutched in hands ready to fight. As the wolves bound toward the knights the robed figure who I figured out is a mage raises his hand again and starts to cast another spell.

“Fire w-”

He’s lying on the ground. Blood flowing freely from a wound in his head. An arrow. An arrow made entirely from wood sticks out of his head. A slight glow surrounds it. All the knights pause shock and horror across their faces. Because of this the wolves hurl themselves into the knights unstopped littering the ground red with blood. By the time the knights have all gotten out of there dase it’s already too late. At least half the knights are dead and the giant wolf is leaping through the air towards them.
