Chapter 6: Birth

It was dark and I couldn't see anything. Everything around me felt warm and snug. The only sound I could hear was a distant cry, it was muffled as if I was underwater. The crying was high-pitched, a child? No, smaller than that, a baby? I felt like I was slowly being pushed toward the sound, along with a strange feeling like I was being forced to leave the safety of a world I had known for so long. After a few more moments of being pushed forward it was suddenly bright, almost blindingly. I managed to keep my eyes open and as they adjusted I could see what was around me.

‘Oh my god what is that?!’ as I took in the creature towering over me, ‘Is that a giant?! It has tusks! Is it going to eat me?!. SHIT SHIT SHIT!’ I thought I had been screaming my words out loud and doing everything in my power to run away, but I remained in place. Despite my efforts all I could manage to do was, wiggle? My screaming and cursing came out as crying… the crying of what sounded like a baby. Oh no… you have got to be kidding me.

Suddenly I was raised up into the air by this monstrous beast holding me between two fingers, during which I managed to get a somewhat blurry look at them. The creature was a woman, she had a very human-like appearance save for her long ears that drooped slightly and the tusks protruded about an inch from her mouth. She was tall with a murky green skin tone and looking at her face covered with crisscrossing lines, told me she was of a more mature age.

Her hair was braided against her head on one side and the other tied in a ponytail. Her clothing looked like a kimono-type robe with fur lining. It was a tanned rough looking fabric with red embroidery of flame covering most of it. Within the flames looked to be intricately stitched figures of what appeared to be people, tossing children to each other and some holding the children up skyward as if to draw eyes to them. The woman spoke a few words then, sounding foreign and strange and which I could not understand. On the left side of my vision I saw what looked like a red glass window, slightly transparent and with ornate gilding at the top and bottom, suddenly appear.

I was trying to process what I was reading when a second window appeared and I focused on it. But just as I was starting to read my attention was drawn to the, rather alarming, conversation that I could now understand.

“I know that you wish to keep the boy Urana, however when they hear there was a girl . . .” the woman holding me sounded irritated and looked at me with disdain, her nose wrinkling and her lip curling slightly.

“Yes Deetra, I will keep--- AHHHHH! THE NEXT ONE DEETRA!” I heard a woman's voice from behind me cry out, I assumed that was Urana, and she began to scream in agony. I was quickly placed down on a soft cloth next to what I assumed was my brother. Like most babies, he had a large head, big eyes, and a chubby body that his equally chubby arms and legs were curled around. Where he differed was his moss green skin, I could also just see what looked like two small teeth peeking out from beneath his lower lip, and he stared at me with big burnt orange eyes. He wasn’t crying… he was just staring back at me. A thought came unaided into my mind.

‘Malkadian,’ it was accompanied by another red window in the corner of my sight.

‘Trifecta soul? What's that?’ I wondered, hoping for another popup, but one did not appear. Then I remembered the other window I hadn't finished reading before. It was pulled to the forefront of my vision.

Congratulations!

I didn't understand what was going on at all. But what I did know was that if I ever wanted to understand what I now was and what I was supposed to become, I was going to need information. I mentally chose the ‘View’ option.

There was an overwhelming amount of information, but what caught my attention was the ‘Race” line. I was reborn as a goblin? How cliché can you get? I was pissed, Goblins were weak, stupid and I would be seen as nothing but cannon fodder.

‘Who knows?’ I thought, ‘maybe goblins are the only race that exists here.’

Little by little more babies were placed around me and my brother, with us in the center of the growing pile. I tried to analyze them and noticed that out of what looked to be a total of eight children, myself included, the only Player souls were me, Malkadian and another baby boy Makadian. Maybe later, when we are older and could do more than cry and drool, I could talk to them and see if anyone of us had more information about how we got here. I only remembered glimpses of who I was before this, they might know more about who I was.

“Urana,” my thoughts were broken by the older woman's voice, Deetra, I think, “if you choose to keep these children both you, Sadaash and these children will suffer for it.” I heard Deetra say from, what I had now realized, was my resting place in a fur-lined basket.

“Please Urana! Let me give these babies to a goblin and forget they ever existed!” Deetra pleaded.

“Deetra, If I was not so exhausted and my heart wrenched that only eight of the twelve survived, I would be bleeding you to make Blood Wine for even suggesting such a thing! Sadaash has rushed out with his swords and vials already. I will trust him to make them listen.” Urana replied in a tired yet final tone.

“Then I am sorry Urana,” Deetra said in a sad solemn tone, “if that is the course you wish to take, our friendship must end here. Less my own family might bare it as well if Sadaash one day fails.” Dreetra turned to leave passing by our basket. She looked at us in disdain she then spat a putrid spray of saliva and phlegm on us.

Several new red popup displays filled my vision.

As my vision blurred, I saw Deetra cover the basket that held me and my new siblings.

“This will hide them, at least till you can stand or Sadaash returns.” Deetra’s voice was sad and growing distant. And I felt my eyes close and was again falling into blackness.
