Chapter 6: Hagrid

Chapter 6: Hagrid

I stop thinking about such things as I quickly freshen up. I look at the mirror one last time to remind myself of the changes that have occurred in my life. I have come a long way from the scrawny bullied kid to a relatively normal kid albeit with magic. I will always be grateful for what Dale has done for me. I am glad that we are brothers.

I look at the wall clock to see the time. It's already 8 am. Normally, Dale's workout music would wake me up at around half past six. I would also join together to do some light exercise, unlike the heavy workout that he does. However, it's odd that he didn't wake me up.

Thinking that whatever it was would be revealed downstairs, I hurry towards the kitchen. As soon as I reach there, I am taken in by surprise. The birthday banner hanging from the ceiling, the balloons fixed on the ground, and most importantly the cake, a simple homemade cake but it was enough to satisfy me.

I've never had a birthday celebration like this, for obvious reasons. Dale also refused to have a birthday party unless I had one but they never relented. So, he bought a cupcake and the candles from the nearby bakery as we celebrated my birthday out of the house away from Petunia and Vernon. I also did the same for Dale's birthday. I tried many times to persuade him to stop doing these things for my sake but he always gave me this angry and guilty look. I knew he still felt guilty but it wasn't his fault. It was never his fault. I eventually stopped because I knew how stubborn he was.

So, this is a first for me. I couldn't help but tear up a little.

It is Harry's birthday today. Yesterday, I and mom had agreed to throw him a simple birthday party. We knew Vernon would be sleeping till 9 am and he wouldn't be happy to see us celebrating a "freak"s birthday so we thought of doing it in the morning. I got up from my bed as quickly as possible without making much noise. I quickly freshened up and headed downstairs.

I could see mom making the cake. I greet her with a good morning as I start decorating. The birthday banner and the balloons were already readied beforehand. So, all that was required was to decorate the room. I quickly finish up as I ask my mom if she needs any help. She refuses, "All these years, I haven't done anything for my sister's son. I am glad that I can do this now. So, just sit back and relax."

Although it still doesn't give my mom any excuses for all the neglect and abuse suffered by Harry, I am glad that she is doing these sorts of things. At least, we can move on from the past. With a smile on my face, I start making breakfast. I have never had the chance to make breakfast due to my mother but I have seen her do it. So, I make breakfast as best as I could.

As soon as I finish with the breakfast, a delicious smell of cake fills up the entire room. I hope that the pig doesn't wake up from the smell. I look towards my mom. Our eyes happen to meet and we could both see that we were thinking the same thing. We laugh loudly at the thought.

My mom has been thinking of divorcing the pig. Honestly, I had hoped that he would change his ways and I would have my dad back. However, after gaining the memories, I can see that there was no other reason for his acts other than his stupid hatred of James Potter. So, I was neither sad nor angry due to her decision. If anything, I was happy. I also wanted to officially change my name to Dale Evans.

Mom takes out the cake from the oven as she decorates it. Not long after, we hear the sounds of someone walking downstairs. We know that it's Harry because he is walking fast. Unsurprisingly, we see Harry arrive at the kitchen as he looks surprised. I can see his eyes water as he quickly blinks it away.

"Happy Birthday Harry," we wish him as he thanks us.

Soon, we completely devour the cake not leaving a single piece for the pig. I also give the Hogwarts letter to Harry. I had found it in the mail this morning. He hurriedly opens it. The content of the letter is basically the same except for the name.

While eating breakfast, we talk about many things, Hogwarts being the most discussed. We both express our excitement about being able to go to the wizarding world. Harry is a half-blooded wizard so his parents should have been responsible for buying things for him. Unfortunately, he is an orphan and neither of my parents knew much about the wizarding world. Professor did say that she would be the one to take me to purchase the study materials.

However, we hadn't a single clue about the time, the date, or the money required. Just as I say that to Harry, I see Vernon coming downstairs while the stairs creak under the pressure of his weight. No sooner had his leg touched the last stair, the doorbell rang. I jerk my head to the door as mom hurries to open it.

A huge shadow is cast over mom as she falls to the ground. All of us look towards the door to see the reason. All of us were scared, to say the least except for me as a name is revealed to me.
