#66 | Fantasy

I fly through the sky riding on a creature of fantasy, backlit by a sunless dark blue sky. The creature is covered in blue and grey fluff and sports six pairs of stumpy legs all trailed by a long and wide tail. I myself have multiple fantastical characteristics such as a similarly blue coloured crocodile tail, vestigial spines that sprout from behind my ears, and a giant pair of feathered wings that flow down my back.

I can’t generate enough force to lift myself up from the ground but I can easily keep control once in the air. I roll off the creatures back into a freefall then catch myself by spreading my wings. I exert myself a little to gain a bit of altitude and flip myself over into a nosedive. In the nosedive I wrap my wings around my body like a cocoon creating a point and a spiral shape in the feathers increasing the speed of my descent.

Below me spans a vast asphalt jungle. Random variations of the cube shape from rectangles to triangles are randomly placed around, stacked, and merged with each other to form the view. I land atop a shape reminiscent of a rooftop and slide down to the ground.

As I tap onto the black and rough ground two pairs of eyes light up from within two of the shapes to my left and right. The walls bulge out similar to unbroken water tension, clawed hands reaching out, the walls solidify and the rubble drops to the ground the moment the arms break through. The claws belong to gargoyles that stand twice my height even while slouched over.

I leap into a forward sprint using my wings to propel myself faster than I could run normally, also using them to take sharper corners without losing much speed but the gargoyles keep up. Since they don’t have to worry about things like stamina but I do, I decide to hide instead.

Ripping around another corner, two vending machines with a sizable gap of a bit more than two metres between the wall and them light up. The vending machines are not plugged into anything yet still give off light as if they were. I go between them and press myself up against the wall wrapping my wings around myself. My wings change colour and pattern to mimic the wall and hide me better.

The gargoyles soon come around the corner. One runs slightly further than the vending machines before stopping and turning back to the other one who stayed behind them and was investigating them. The one who stopped for the other one lets out a deep crackling screech and jumps on top of the machines and then over the wall where I lose sight of it. The other one looked around for a few seconds before continuing to run forward. I don’t move until I can’t hear them anymore.

Removing myself from hiding I backtrack until I find a fork in the road and take the other direction. This road leads to something that looks like an actual building, still made of the simple shapes though. A set of stairs leads up into a lone door. The layout is similar to a scaled down motel.

On the stairs stands a man that stares blankly forwards. I nudge him slightly and he gets aggressive and violent, ranting about interrupting his daily routine. The anger fades as quickly as it came and he goes back to standing and staring at nothing.

I am still myself as before but with a lack of wings. Ahead of me stretches a corridor. To the left stands rows of lockers that seem to stretch infinitely into the distance and to my right is a wall made of glass panes that look out into a large rectangular courtyard surrounded on all sides by buildings. Sun shines down, basking everything in the soft orange and warmth of sunset.

I walk forward at a sedate pace, taking everything in. The end of the corridor opens into a square room. The only things in this room is a long blackboard against the back wall and a teachers desk against that same wall to the left of it. Next to the desk stands a beautiful woman, with brown hair and eyes, who sports a warm friendly smile. I knew her to be incredibly nice.

I step into the middle of the room and face the blackboard. On the blackboard is a treble clef and four horizontal lines. Notes appear on the board filling out the music sheet before it is all wiped away by an unseen hand in but a moment.

After the first round of notes the teacher starts singing them carrying a somber tone still with that warm smile, after the second I join in, after the third we start to harmonise, after the fourth she starts a dance, after the fifth I follow her lead closing my eyes and letting it all flow over me. The sixth never comes as the unheard music abruptly cuts out at the last note, I finish the last note nonetheless.

I let my arms drop to my sides and relax. I slowly open my eyes and instead of the warm light, or a cozy atmosphere I am met with a cold, dark, long abandoned room.

The end of the blackboard had broken off and fallen to the floor kicking up dust. To my right the windows shine with beams of moonlight, highlighting the dust and making it easier to see. I look to the left and in the place of the teacher stands a doll, drained of battery. Her joints rusted and unusable.
