Chapter 8. War Dogs

The Amazons were winning, and they knew it. Not that it came like surprising news to them, this was just a second nature to them.

But they couldn't help but admire the much resistance their opponent had put up. He was strong, fast... But not smart. And that's where they got the edge. He seemed to be void of experience in the battle field, and that made him to solely rely on his superhuman abilities.

But that's never what gets anyone a win. Not when you are at war with the Amazon warriors. They quickly learned his ways, his movements, and his constant repetition.

Still, he was formidable. They couldn't wear him down. Getting tired was seemingly not a phrase in his vocabulary. He had put down so many of them and he still looked fresh and ready for more.

They also couldn't help but notice his reluctance to kill. They would have called it the pride of a man that leads to his fall, but that was above him. He wasn't proud because he wasn't afraid to hit a woman as hard as he could.

Just ask the women lying on the ground with broken legs and hands.

He just wasn't one to kill. Whether that made him good or bad, it didn't matter to them. He was foreign and unacceptable. His very presence here was a threat to their livelihood.

But his reluctance was also a tactical advantage for them, as they devised his demise or capture - whichever came first. They were confident enough to approach him without worrying about instant death.

Was he a god? That's something they wondered. He couldn't be though. They all would have known.

But how did men grow to become as powerful as he was? Last time they checked, that was not the case.

The Amazons had divided to conquer. They had ensnared traps that Wan recklessly walked into, giving them the upper hand every time.

He still remained relentless, however, but so did they. They kept on outwitting him, evading his presumed kicks and punches. Whisking him out of the air with ropes when he tried to soar. Getting openings to tear into his skin when he least expected to leave out an opening.

Faking their punches while working in unison, and letting him have the most powerful kicks they could. All that, and he still remained standing, until he got enough of it.

They saw him focus on something, and then mysterious attacks started happening around them.

---

In my respite from an attack, I clasped my hands together and focused on the creation of a shadow, following my mental imagery. With the remaining cursed energy around me, I knew that I could hold this creation for long enough to create an opening for me to escape to the shore.

The shape of the shadow became more clearer in my mind and translated to a shadow beneath me. It was taking the form of the head of a puppy.

"My first shikigami." I said as I completed the process. "With you by my side, I will continue to be safe on this treacherous land."

"Divine Dogs!"

A black dog emerged from the shadow and leapt to my left side, looking both excited and curious. It had black fur and three dots on its forehead, just like it was engraved on the side of the coin.

Another similar beast emerged from the shadow and stood authoritatively by my right side. It looked just like the first dog, differentiable only by the white fur.

They both looked ferocious as they howled, showing glimpses of their strong teeth and claws.

"Protect me!" I issued the command knowing that once again, the odds were to my side.

On my bright side, I hardly doubted any of the women in Themyscira had the ability to see Curses, or for that case, Shikigami. That was a sorcerer's lifetime curse - the ability to see Curses and manipulate cursed energy.

The Divine Dogs did their job, and they did it incredibly. Efficiently, they dismantled the formations of the Amazons and attacked them from all angles while still lurking in the shadows.

They used their sharp teeth to tear into leg biceps and pounced on their blossoms with their claws without being hindered or bothered. They had so much free space and thirty seconds into their manifestation, they had done so much to inflict terror into warriors.

Everything was going well, and smoothly, despite by weakening energy. That was until, she came from the forest.

She was riding a white horse and clad in the same warrior's attire, only with fancier colours and a crown on her head. She had her sword sheathed and tied to her thin waistline. Immediately she saw what was happening on the shores of the lake. She incredibly stood up on her horse and leapt high and fast towards the black shikigami.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

The Divine Dogs were aware of their opponents inability to see them, and that kept their guard a bit down in the thirty seconds they had orchestrated chaos.

She quickly pulled out her sheathed sword while still in the air, and to my surprise, I saw her keen intent to plunge it into the black dog.

I had only known them for just thirty seconds, but their companionship meant the world to me. I felt this sudden mixture of feelings well up in me as I watched in slow motion as she got closer to "Wolfy".

"No." I gasped, but what I meant to do was warn the Divine Dog. "Please."

As if it was nothing, she put her sword into the dog that was pulling her sister by the leg, saving her from losing a limb.

I still remember the cry of agony that came from Wolfy as the sword penetrated as deep as it could. The sharp, suppressed cry of a dog in so much pain reverberated in my head and echoing in my heart.

I felt my heart get torn apart and my cursed energy dispersed as I let go of the remaining shikigami. Yet, my sorcerer's instincts told me to keep my guard up as that insightful intuition dissipated together with the cursed energy. The sorcerer's instinct was on as long as I could manipulate cursed energy, and it wore of when I ran out of it.

"Princess Diana." I heard the saved warrior say as she thanked her saviour, just as the dead black wolf dissipated.

"Put pressure on that." She advised, sounding and looking composed, characteristic of a strong princess.

"Princess Diana?" I thought to myself. "As in Wonder Woman?"

With Wolfy's body gone, only his cry lingered in the air, but his death didn't grip me as much as it did before.

"They are gone now." Diana told her devastated sisters who were still kicking and punching at nothing in despair. "Everyone, compose yourselves."

"And to think that she can see..." I failed to complete the thought. Would it be much of a surprise that Wonder Woman could see Shikigami?

"Wait for the reinforcements." She advised, referring to the still incoming warriors from the cliff. They were not far away. "I'll deal with him."

She then started walking, before rushing towards where I was. A few meters from disappearing into the canopy beyond the lake.

"I won't let you get away." She screamed the threat to me.

I was out of cursed energy, but still had an untouched 200/200 abilities stats. Sure, I could take her on, but how long would I last with the incoming reinforcements. If I got into to forest, I stood a chance at getting to the shore.

On the other hand, what if I took a path that led me straight to the reinforcements. I was pouring all my hope into thinking that if I got to the edge of the Paradise Islands, I would figure out how to escape then. But the details honestly escaped me, though it remained to be the better option since they wouldn't accept my surrender.

But, ahead of me was a 50-50 chance, and, behind me was yet another 50-50 chance.

What were the odds that Diana was the same Wonder Woman I knew of. Kind and just, with the will to do only right. If I surrendered to her, maybe she could accept my surrender, and I would have had a much better chance of escaping from a trial with enough resources to escape.

On the other hand, she could see what only sorcerers could. What did that say about her? Could she be the complete opposite of what I was thinking?

Could she resolve to instantly killing me on the spot like she had done to Wolfy?

Sadly, it was never an impasse, only a consideration that could only make things better or worse. Whatever the case, I had to try to let her hear me out.

I had survived against the odds this far, after all.

She was approaching quicker than I was moving, and I could feel her getting closer by the second. How was she faster than me?!

I quickly turned around and raised my hands. Fast, I uttered words I had little faith in, but hoped they would work. "I surrender!"

She didn't stop, neither slow down. All she did was give me a reply that sobered me up. "Oh no you don't!"
