Chapter 2. No Re-rolls

Damien stared with wide blue eyes and slacken jaws.

What is this..? A movie shooting? No, a gang fight?

He couldn't believe what he was seeing, like something straight out of an action flick or a fantasy novel, a dozen kids were rushing towards each other with violence in their eyes. This was no simple schoolyard scuffle, as nobody seemed to want to hold their punches back. He was no stranger to street fights himself, considering he lived in the more seedy part of town, but this was on a whole other level.

These kids were thrashing each other like nobody's business, every punch and kick ended with someone flying off their feet and slamming into walls, and yet as if they hadn't felt a thing they simply got back up and rejoined the flay. The strength and speed they were casually showing off was something he wasn't even sure Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan themselves could manage. He even saw a kick getting kicked like seven feet into the air! the kid with dyed blue hair just crouched onto a wall and jumped off as if he was spiderman and used another boy as a landing pad. A loud sound that sounded like an explosion brought him out of his awe as his eyes locked back towards the fight. What greeted him was the sight of crumbling stone as there was a fist-sized hole in the brick wall.

This... This wasn't something humans could accomplish.

Thankfully everyone was too distracted with the fight to notice him peeking behind a dumpster. He knew it was dangerous to stay, and just as he considered making a stealthy retreat, an intense blue glow filled the area just like what first attracted him to the area. As if super-powered kids beating the ever-loving crap out of each other wasn't enough, someone took the "Weird-O-Meter" and cranked it up to 11.

Dice. It looked as if a hundred shining blue dice just... Materialized in mid-air. They floated for a moment before prompting falling to the ground. There was a lull in the battle for a moment before everybody went crazy, like sharks during a feeding frenzy they viciously tore each other apart while scrambling madly towards the dice innocuously sitting on the floor.

"Let go, Kyle, that one's mine!"

"Sonovabitch, don't even think of touching any of those Dice! They're ours damnit!"

"Fuck off! You looking to die?!"

They ignored everything as they rushed towards the items, even ignoring an incoming punch or kick just to get another one in their greedy palms. As soon as they got one, they would try to toss it, and it would change from blue to red before his eyes. He could hear some shouting, and sometimes the red dice would turn into plain white ones. Damien didn't know what to make of the chaos happening, why everyone suddenly acted like a drug addict trying to get another hit, yet his curiosity overcame his caution and fear.

What's so special about these dice that would cause them to act like that..? Where did they come from? And... Was it somehow related to the superhuman feats I just saw?

He always was too curious for his own good. It was a bad habit he's been trying to fix, really, but at this moment, the mystery was just far too tempting. If worse comes to worst, he could always just run, right? He was always confident in his speed back during track and field, plus the exit was merely around the corner and they can't possibly do anything to him in a crowd, right?

After giving himself a prep talk he managed to convince himself to try and get one of the dice for himself. His heart was pounding in excitement as he waited for his chance. Thankfully, the opportunity came sooner than he thought as one of the fighters was slammed into a nearby wall. The boy was knocked out cold. Another quick glance to the fight and he decided it was time. He took a deep breath to calm his nerves and pulled up his hoodie to cover his face before he rushing out, keeping his head low as he rummaged through the boy's pocket after snatching the two blue dice in his hand. The kid had a death grip on the thing because even while unconcious he wouldn't let go of it.

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Damien also found a single red dice, and 5 white ones. He didn't know the difference between them, but better safe than sorry, and took them all. A closer look at the boy's clothes revealed that he was wearing a school uniform, the blazer had a golden sword and shields symbol on the right breast pocket.

How classy.

He didn't have time to ponder what school it might've belonged too as he had to book it before anyone noticed him. He kept stealing glances behind his back to make sure there wasn't a small horde of superpowered teenagers chasing after him. He hopped the fence and ran as if his ass was on fire, only stopping after he got to work. A scolding by his manager for being late and one mind-bendingly boring day at work later and he was finally holed up in his room.

What are you..?

It was beautiful, a deep rich ocean blue, translucent and seemed to faintly glow in his darkroom underneath the covers. It looked like a finely crafted jewel, a piece of art, rather than any dice he has ever seen. If he was to make it into a necklace or earrings, he was sure he'd be able to get a good price on it.

See, even after an hour of simply admiring its exquisitely beautiful exterior and pondering on what he had seen, he was no closer to figuring out its secret. So, with quiet anticipation, he rolled it. Watching as its sapphire glow slip out from his slender fingers and bounce off his linen sheets, eyes wide as they tracked its trajectory.

Navy gave way to crimson as the colors shifted instantly before his eyes. There was a strange soothly feeling as he watched the mezmerizing light show. Suddenly a buzz from his phone startled him. He didn't know who could be texting him at this time, so with a groan, he pushed aside the magical dice to reach for his phone. Damien sure hoped this was important, or else he was going to be so peeved with whoever interrupted him.

Instantly, all traces of sleepiness and irritation were wiped from his eyes as he read the message.

Congratulations!

[You've won a Dice!]

You've become a Dicer! >_<

What the fuck...?

He stared in shock and incomprehension. There was no number, only the ID showed as "X". Slowly a sense of fear and panic grew within him as he imaged all kinds of scenarios from basic sci-fi and fantasy settings. A hidden society, an incredibly high tech sensor, a government agent coming to silence him. Cold sweat dripped down his brow as he slightly shivered.

"Who the fuck- How the fuck did they know? I just rolled it..."

Maybe he had been too impulsive and it was finally coming to bite him in the ass. Before he could go into full-blown conspiracy theory mode and have a panic attack, he heard another buzz.

I'm X, but you can call me whatever you want.

As for the how, well judging by your stare,

I think you already know~ (^_

His eyes snapped away from the now red dice on his bed in shock. This confirmed it, whoever- Whatever, X was could clearly see him somehow. He was using an old Nokia 3310. There was no camera or app for it to be hacked. In fact, he was surprised that the texts were able to come in so fast at all without taking a while a load.

The fact that they could also hear him and reply in real-time was just an added bonus it seems.

"The dice... But that still doesn't explain how? The thing is practically see-through, it can't be a listening device, could it? Is it Magic? "

Damien said with no small amount of anticipation and wonder. It doesn't seem like X was hostile towards him for discovering some kind of secret, so he might as well find out as much as he could while he was being indulged. The fact that there didn't seem to be any monster or snake people out to kill him was also a big relief. Well, as far as he could tell there weren't anyways.

LOL, simply put, I can see everything around it.

Well, its more like detect, and that's all you need to know.

That is Dice, the cube that can change everything.
