The Nexus is what the survivors started calling the strange zones inside the ruins of the old cities.
The Nexus doesn’t have a sharp boundary but you will recognize it by the sickly green light that emanates like a radioactive glow from between what remains of the melted and torn office buildings. A quick check with a Geiger counter will prove to you that it’s definitely radioactive, but all the same no one understands what the glow really is.
The danger increases enormously the closer you get towards the center. Horde and Raiders patrol on the edges, along with mutant Earth animals and strange creatures unknown to man before (be sure to read the Bestiary for a quick rundown on the main varieties). Further in are the Biomech mobs. They are vile creatures made of flesh twisted together with machinery and electronics, and with other strange unknown devices. They are far smarter than anything in the outer zones and should be treated with extreme caution. There is no known way to categorize them, since they seem to have an endless array of shapes and sizes.

No one (at least no one who has made it out again) in recent years has managed to penetrate to the center of the Nexus. What lies at the heart of the thing that has wrapped itself into the world is a mystery. But explorers who have come back from the edge of the deeps have seen enormous beasts, and lumbering machinery, and clouds of glasslike flying things which have torn parties to shreds in seconds. Attempting to penetrate the deeps of the Nexus is a challenge for the truly powerful player, and even then he may find himself frighteningly overmatched.
Why does it have just one name, The Nexus, if the green zones are seen all over the world in dozens of ruined cities? In fact a handful of early explorers in the years right after the calamity did manage to travel deeper than anyone else, and come back out again alive. But they didn’t always return to the places that they started. Normal space seems to change inside the depths of the Nexus. Some of them entered in Moscow, only to stumble out again in Singapore, or from New York to Los Angeles, or London to Melbourne. The Nexus has many points of contact with the Earth, but it exists in its own geometry. What is the Nexus? That is a mystery for now, though there are many theories.
