Chapter 6: Exploring 01

Chapter 6: Exploring 01

Silas opened his eyes and noticed that everyone else had gotten up first. It couldn’t be helped; the raid left him totally exhausted. He got out and followed the smell of meat being cooked.

"Good morning, buddy!" Jacob waved his hand and gave him wolf meat for breakfast. He was sitting with everyone else around a small fire. "Come and eat something. You need to regain your strength, and the best way is with a good meal."

"Agh, only meat again, without condiments or anything else?"

"Come on, don’t get picky."

"I can’t survive with only meat, Jacob." He took a seat in the circle and asked. "By the way, did the things outside go away?"

"Yes, I was keeping a lookout. It left about three hours ago. You were right, we didn’t have any problems."

"I told you we were going to fine Emily. By the way, can I ask each of you to tell me your names?"

"What? Did you listen when we welcomed you to the group?"

"Or during the preparation for the attack with Tomas? Oh, I guess you weren’t there."

He was a bit ashamed to admit it, but he had trouble remembering names and faces. It was easier in games where he could assign a codename based on their powers or classes and then learn their username with time and by playing together.

"Umm, yeah, if you could tell me again, it would be really helpful." They went in clockwise order, and everyone told him his name.

He didn’t want to look like a person with bad manners, but he was already forgetting some of them after a minute. The best way to commit them to memory was to associate the names with their powers.

"I have a suggestion. We need to go outside for various reasons, like exploring and looking for food and other people. But we don’t want to go blindly; we need a plan in case something happens, and we have to fight."

"Fight again?"

"I’m not saying we are going to fight, but we need to assume the worst when exploring. So, if you don’t mind, could we do a training exercise to learn all our powers?" This way, he could take down two birds with one stone. They had nothing to object to after all. They all agreed that Silas was correct in his caution. No one wanted to have another incident like the fight with the wolves.

After eating breakfast, they went to a side of the village with no houses to show their powers. The first one was Emily. She didn’t have to do much since they all knew her powers.

The ability to detect movements and other creatures through the plants in the area. In this forest, she had every advantage. "That’s a good power for scouting, but can you control the plants? Maybe fight with them?"

"I did try during the fight, but it didn’t work. There are not many plants or vines here, but I don’t think I can make them fight for me. At least I didn’t feel it while travelling."

Next was Jacob. He was also obvious. He could make a gun and fire it with infinity ammunition, very simple. "Can you give me the gun or to someone else?"

He tried, but as soon as the gun touched someone else's hand, it vanished. He could make it again, but he was the only one able to wield it.

Is not like that Jack guy who died. He was able to make swords for everyone. So are they different classes? And they can make weapons with different properties? He had another user capable of making weapons. It was the woman who made the swords using rocks.

Nadine took a step forward and made another of her swords. It was jagged and crude like the others, and she looked tired after only making one. It was a stark contrast to Jacob, who could summon his gun without a problem.

"I can make weapons, but not too many like Jack. I can kind of feel the power of the earth and the rocks. I feel like, depending on the type of rock I came across, I could make it better, but I’m not sure. All the rocks are around the same quality here."

A sudden revelation hit Silas. "Wait, you can tell if a rock is better quality by simply looking?"

"Yeah, I can feel it in my hands too."

"This may be better than I thought. Nadine, you could be a blacksmith or a class that specializes in making weapons."

This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.

"But it's not that useful compared to Jack, who could make weapons for everyone."

"No, you get tired by making a couple of weapons. Then that means the quality must be much higher than a power that makes a lot of weapons. We need to find metal or ores to test more."

Next was Nathan. He was the man who could summon a shield. Like Jacob, only he could use the shield. "I don't know what else to tell you is just a shield. It’s very resistant, as you saw during the fight. I think I was the only one who could take the wolf attacks."

"Having a tank is important. You and our healer are going to be the cornerstone of our strategy, Nathan."

"I’m not sure if that is a compliment, but I’ll take it."

Speaking of healer, he looked at Rebecca. She was around his age, just like Emily and Jacob. She summoned an entity made of shadows. It was hard to tell since the body was covered in a mantle of shadows, but it looked like a person.

"I can use this thing to heal wounds. I don’t know how, but it had anesthetic and bandages. It pulled it out from its inside." She had a disgusted look as she spoke. In fact, she was avoiding looking at it directly.

"To be honest, I don’t like the feeling this thing causes me when I use it, but I can help if anyone gets hurt."

"Did you try to use it on the deceased?" He knew it was a rude question, and he could see the look of disapproval on their faces, but he had to know if he had someone who could resurrect in the guild.

"No, I can’t revive dead people. I tried." She took a step back and sat with a sad expression.

"Guess it's my turn." The older man came in front; his name was Franco. He summoned a couple of boxing gloves in his hand and did a little sparring.

"Are you a boxer?" Jacob asked.

"No, but I used to go to a boxing gym a few years back. It was to blow steam off. I never stepped into a ring as an official boxer."

"What can you do with those gloves?"

"Patience, kid. I got stronger after waking up here, but I don’t think that has anything to do with the gloves." He punched a nearby rock, and it shattered. "They just give a bit more power. Nothing special like fireballs or a gun with all the ammo I could want." He was more disappointed at his own ability than paying attention to Silas.

There was only one person left, a woman. She looked like the oldest person here. Her name was Nora. "Well, we haven’t been talking about it, but in case you’re curious, I’m a teacher, and I think my power has something to do with helping others. Jacob, can I ask you to explain your experience?"

"Sure, during the fight, I felt at ease for a moment. I could hear Nora’s voice inside my head and saw a light that told me where to shoot to kill the wolf."

"I feel something similar I tried to help, but I couldn’t do anything to the wolf until I heard Jacob doubting his skill. I think we were connected at the time, and I tried to hold the gun with you. I could see through your eyes for a moment. You did well, Jacob." She gave him a tender smile.

"Thanks." He scratched the back of his head in embarrassment.

"Although I don’t like seeing young people use guns, I have to make an exception for the circumstances."

With that, Silas knew all their powers. It was time to assing the roles. He noticed all the eyes were looking at him. "What?"

"You’re the last one, Silas." For a brief moment, he felt as if he were back in school.

"Me, oh right." He forgot he had to show his power, but he wasn’t sure how. "I’ll get to the point. I think I can copy the power of my enemies. I can use it now, but you saw me during the battle."

"Is true, he also looked like a bear when we met."

"Can you copy our powers?" Nora offered an idea.

"I’ll try." He focused on Jacob, but it was useless. He didn’t feel anything changing. "No, I’m not sure what the reason is, but I can’t copy any of your abilities."

There could be a lot of reasons. Like the fact he could only copy beast skills, or maybe it didn’t work on the same species. In any case, they believed him, and he made a drawing on the earth with his finger.

"Okay, pay attention to the division of roles. I don't know how many or which classes exist, so I have to divide us by roles. First, I have the theory that Nadine is some sort of blacksmith class, not focused on combat but on making objects like weapons."

"Then I can’t fight."

"No, you can. We all saw how you cut the leg of the wolf. It is just that your power is better for areas other than combat, just like Emily’s scout ability. To make this simple, I’m going to give roles in combat. No matter what creature we encounter, this is going to be the basic formation we should use." He pointed to the ground with a list of names and a small drawing of their powers.

Attack: Jacob, Franco, Nadine, Silas.

Tank: Nathan, Silas.

Support: Emily, Rebecca, Nora, Silas.

"This is the order. We split into three groups. The ones in attack are the ones focused on damage and bringing the enemy down as fast as possible. Tank is mainly Nathan. You need to be able to adapt quickly and protect the damage group. Stay close to them and look at the enemy's movements. Support is all those with powers that aren’t focused on damage or defense. Scouting, healing, and buffing, you need to read the situation and use your powers accordingly."

"I’ll try to guide you and issue orders during combat, but we may not have time. In the worst case, I could die by a sneak attack and the rest of you would have to deal with it on your own. Any questions?" He was sure of himself. He was so sure of his ability to organize raids and groups that it took him a moment to notice the strange looks.

"What?"

"Why are all the women in the support group with only Nadine being in attack?" Emily raised her hand with suspicious eyes.

"And why are you in all the groups?"

He wasn’t sure what they were implying, but he only had to explain. "Is very simple. My powers depend on the enemy we’re fighting. I’ll read the situation and assume the best position. The rest of you being support, is just the best place for your abilities. You can still fight, like I told Nadine, but not as our main source of damage."

It wasn’t like he didn’t understand. A lot of people dislike playing support. He encountered many who voiced their dissatisfaction with it on a multitude of MMOs.

Missing the point, Jacob made a sign to relax and they all agreed.

It was time to decide the next step of the plan.
