It didn’t take long to find the group they talked about. It was a decent group of people. The first thing Silas did was to count them all. 20 plus two would be 22. This could already be a decent guild. I need to learn more about their abilities in case they turn hostile.
"We found two more people just as Emily said." The man announced his presence to a man wearing a suit.
"Two more hands, good. We need all the help we can get to stay alive."
"Pleasure to meet you, partner. I’m Jacob, and this is Silas."
"Are you the leader of this group?" He didn’t waste any time and went straight to the point.
"Well, I can't say I am because we only met yesterday. We're more concerned with finding a refugee and avoiding animals than with assigning roles like a leader. I’m Tomas." He gave him a handshake, but he was more worried about the situation.
They haven't fully grasped the situation. They are still shocked, but they’re lucky I found them. I guess I’ll have to be the leader.
Before he could ask more questions, a woman with green hair called everyone to the center. "I found something! is like a village or something like that!" Her voice was full of excitement.
Tomas and everyone else went to her side. "How far is it?"
"I think about half a day to the northeast. But I felt some animals around the area; they were about the size of a big dog."
"Mmm, we should still go check it out. Everyone, we’re moving." He went to the side of the new couple. "Sorry, we can talk more as we move. We need to leave the forest and find a safe place."
"We fought a six-legged bear yesterday. I can’t imagine what other animals are around here."
Tomas's expression was somber as he listened to those words. "That’s good because we found a couple of bodies torn to pieces not too far from here. I don’t know if it was a bear, but I don’t want to die a brutal death like that."
Two days and there are already players that have lost. I can’t talk. I almost died too. This world is brutal. Why didn't he send us to some sort of starting area? This was supposed to be your world, and yet you haven’t done anything after giving me my power. He sneered in his mind at the System that brought him here.
"Do you need any help?" Jacob asked him as he was falling behind. He was going too slowly in comparison with the group.
"No, I’m fine I can move on my own." He pushed his body to move despite the pain and advanced toward the front where the woman with green hair was.
"Hello, I’m Silas. I didn’t catch your name."
"Oh, it's Emily."
"Emily, you know your ability pretty well for only being on the second day. Do you know something more?"
"What?" She was getting nervous, but he pressed on. Information was key.
"I’m talking about your power. Did you have any explanation for it or maybe your class? Did the System speak to you when you arrived here?"
"N-No, it only said the same as everyone else, something about power and saving the worlds. I haven’t heard the voice after that."
"So, you pick it up only by instinct?"
"Yes, pretty much. I only sat on the ground for a while, and then I realized I could feel others' presence across the ground."
Then could it be that no one really got a tutorial or some additional explanation? It is still too early to jump to that conclusion. If it said the truth, then there are 100,000 people all over the place.
"Sorry, I can’t talk for too long. I need to concentrate on the movements of the vines."
"Yeah, sure." He went back to the end of the group with Jacob. It was not to talk with him, but just to keep the appearance that he had an ally.
If we have to fight some beasts to gain control of the settlement, then this may be a good chance to nominate myself as leader.
After some hours, they stopped for Emily’s signal. They were close. After some deliberation, they sent a team of four to investigate. The village seemed to be hiding in a cave. According to Emily, the beasts were inside.
This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.
"Does anyone in the group that went to the cave have skills to hide?
"I’m not sure we haven’t been using our powers too much."
"Why not?"
"These powers are very unstable, and we should avoid using them unless absolutely necessary."
"What?" It was ridiculous. Beyond ridiculous, it was stupid. "We need to use our powers and see what abilities each person has."
"We don’t know if it has a cost. What if it takes our lives if we use it too much? We can’t trust a voice that kidnapped us and threw us in this weird place."
"But you don’t have any problem with letting her take the risk?" He pointed at Emily, who was trying to move away as the mood became tense.
"I said only when it was necessary. Emily’s power is very useful. Without her, we couldn’t have taken paths away from animals or found more people like you." Tomas was still talking with a commanding tone, but his eyes began to turn cold toward Silas.
"Yeah, no problems. He’s just worried about the scouts. He’s the type of guy to fight with tooth and nail. I saw it with my own eyes." Jacob came between the two and took Silas away with friendly hug.
"You shouldn’t antagonize the leader on your first day, buddy."
"He said he wasn't the leader."
"Yeah, he said one thing, but look at everyone else." The eyes looking at him were full of distrust and caution. "People are on edge. Things are going well. There is no reason to question the orders. If you do that, then you are going to become a pariah."
"That’s the thing. Things aren’t going well. We could have sent those four to their deaths without any reason." He thought about it. Maybe Tomas's aim was for them to die and reduce the number of enemies, and then kill everyone else alone to get a ton of experience.
No, unless the beasts are his allies, he wouldn’t get any experience. Unless his power is commanding beasts like a summoner or some kind of druid? He couldn’t tell.
After twenty minutes, the group returned safely. They said there were some types of wolves in the cave. It was big, with two dozen buildings. It was clear evidence that people had stayed there at some point in the past.
"Thanks for going there. I know it was a risk, but I think we can take the place and use it as a shelter until we find a way to go back home."
Everyone's mood improved. There was a slimmer of hope in the madness. "Okay people, we have to decide if we’re going to fight for it." After a quick count of hands, it was unanimous.
"Okay, I think we need to decide on a leader for the attack. Is there anyone who volunteers?"
"I’ll do it." He barely let him finish before standing up and walking in front. "I’ll guide you as the leader of this raid." They look at him with skeptic eyes.
"Boy, how old are you?" a fat man in a suit asked him.
"18, but that has nothing to do with my skills. I have completed several raids in dozens of competitive MMOs."
"Kid, this isn’t a game. We’re in the middle of a forest full of dangerous animals. We need someone who knows what he’s doing in charge."
"Not, not a game." He wanted to laugh at that bad joke, but he took a deep breath to let it go. "Ok, if we ignore the fact that the System told us he has given us classes and powers, I’m still an experienced raider. My brain is used to being surprised. I can issue orders for the rest of you, no matter what thing is waiting inside."
After that, no one took him seriously anymore, and another person spoke. "I think it should be Tomas."
"Me?"
"Uh!"
"Yes, you’re one of the most athletic people here, and you said that you’re a lawyer. That’s pretty impressive, don’t you guys think so?"
Most of them nodded and said words of agreement. But Tomas was a bit reluctant. "I mean, are you guys fine with having a 25-year-old in charge? I’m just a lawyer. I don’t have any fighting experience."
"No one here is in the army or a cop. We have to do with the people here, and you have been very responsible during the last couple of days."
"If that’s what you all want, then I can’t refuse." With a vote of 21 to 1, Tomas was named the new leader.
Silas only went to sit in a corner, lamenting the stupidity of his companions. He had the intention of helping even after they rejected his generous offer, but Tomas only ordered a couple of people to use their powers.
"Whatever happens inside, don’t use your power unless someone's life is in danger. Emily will tell us about the number of animals, and Jack can make weapons for us. We will split into two groups, one in the front as attackers, the other acting as backup."
Everyone agreed, and they formed a line, taking turns seeing who could wield the weapons best.
"Are you sure you don’t want to participate, Silas?" Jacob came and sat.
"Why do you care? You voted for Tomas like everyone else. Shouldn’t you be in the front-line with your gun?"
"I told him, but he said that I should only use it in emergencies. I can't use those swords very well, so I’m in the support team with you buddy." He tried to give him a fist bump, but he ignored it.
"Ridiculous. You should be in the center of the formation, shooting at anything that gets in range. It is so simple, and yet we are going like headless chickens without even practicing our powers or defining roles."
"Man, you really believe you are so much better than the rest of us?"
"Oh no, we go straight to attack my personality. Just because I said the truth and you are all blind to it. Be my guest. I’m used to it."
"So, you’re the only one who is speaking the truth? You're kind of giving me the reason with that display of ego, hehe."
"Whatever."
"Buddy, I may only be one year older, but I can tell you something that my dad, rest in heaven, told me when I was an annoying kid. If you act like an ass, don’t be surprised when people talk shit about you." He gave him more tree leaves to change his makeshift bandages.
"In any case, I’m counting on your skills as "Master Raider" or whatever it is that you are called in those games. If something happens, I’m looking at you for advice first."
He left him alone. He had heard those words before, and so many people told him to be nice or consider other people's feelings. It wasn’t like he was doing it on purpose; it was just hard for him to understand people. Games are much simpler to understand, but I don’t have stats or screens here. What is the point of giving me a power if you hide the information?
It was time to attack the cave. Since he didn’t partake in any of the planning, Tomas only told him to stay in the back as backup. He could feel the cold stares from everyone else but Jacob.
"Is everyone ready? Follow the plan and stick together." His first raid in this new world started.
