Chapter 1 – Rebirth

Chapter 1 – Rebirth

I tried to move around in the darkness, I could feel my body as I touched the corners of something solid, wet, and warm.

As I kicked and flailed my arms around, it felt as if I was moving towards something. My legs kicked again, and they didn’t feel anything solid or warm. A cold breeze passed on them.

Shortly after my torso also stopped feeling the constant warmth, my arms and finally my head. No longer in the warm darkness, I opened my eyes wide to see stars and a few hooded figures, one of which was holding me in his hands.

Where am I? I thought, as my mind started to recollect itself from the current events that happened.

The hooded man spoke quietly, his tone sounded happy, but from the small light of the stars, I could see his green, emerald eyes. He pulled me into an embrace and quietly started sobbing. What is going on?

As I was trying to make sense of the whole situation, he wrapped me with cloth and gave me to another figure, one that had a strong metallic smell. The figure, a woman with snow colored hair visible in the darkness, looked at me with warm blue eyes. She, too, spoke with a soft voice in an unknown language.

I looked at her, slowly trying to absorb the hidden traits of her face, as I extended my hand to touch her face, I could see a small, blood red hand extend. My head immediately connected the dots, I was just born.

With a shut mouth and furrowed brows, I stared at the woman, presumably the one who gave birth to me. She chuckled, making my heart tighten a bit.

One of the hooded figures said something. All of a sudden, the figures started to move, the mother also stood up grunting in the process, the man who held me before helped her stand and walk, she took wobbly steps with uneven breath.

And yet the mother that just gave birth, stood up and walked.

They carried me as the group walked through what I came to recognize as a forest, at moments they picked their pace up, only to take small moments of rest for my mother, every time they did, they looked around themselves, crouching and listening.

They are being chased and we are a burden. I thought to myself, as I started to look around too.

My mother softly whispered something in my ear while kissing my head, only to tense up, the whole group didn’t move. From the shadows of the forest a voice came out.

Before I knew it, wind was pushing against me, the surroundings became a blur as the mother ran. Shouts were all around us, the sound of metal hitting metal ringing clearly in the once quiet forest.

The wind stopped pushing against me, and everything became clear, in front of us was a figure shrouded by the darkness of the forest, the only thing that was visible were his white teeth and gleaming eyes.

For a moment, it felt as if cold water dropped on my head. she can’t fight him like this.

The wind howled, another figure appeared, while clashing his swords with the pursuer he let out a panicked shout, the wind started to push against me again as the mother continued to run.

The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

People were dying around us as they battled the pursuers, swords clashing against swords created sparks that illuminated the accumulating blood on the ground, the forest was slowly returning to it’s quiet state, the mother’s breath however was haggard, her legs wobbled as she kept running with whatever meager strength she had left, until she fell on the ground.

Someone had hit her from behind, she could only keep me to her chest and lay on the ground as the sound of footsteps grew closer, someone behind us spoke with a malicious tone only to be cut mid sentence, blood spilled on the ground.

The man with the green eyes appeared from nowhere and crouched before us. I could tell from the frantic look in his eyes that something was wrong with the mother. His eyes started to water as he took me in his arms and began running in the opposite direction of the mother.

She had a small smile as she looked at us, until the darkness of the night took her.

The cold feeling on my head vanished. no wait, go back! She’s still there, we need to save her! I screamed in my head.

My throat began to hurt, and my eyes blurred, it felt as if I was drowning, I wanted to scream to cry out, but just as I was going to, my mind calmed down, the feeling of cold water on my head returned. if I shout they’ll hear us, we couldn’t do anything because I was just a burden.

Footsteps on the ground was the only thing I could hear, my cold mind was trying to stay away from the image of the smiling mother, but the feeling of choking was ever so present. The man ran until we got out of the forest.

On the horizon some lights showed what seemed to be a little town.

he switched his gaze from the forest, the town and me, he wiped the remaining tears from my eyes and whispered something into my ears in a broken voice. He ran towards the town.

While he was running towards the town, my mind got out of its cold state of thinking, tears started to well up and fall from my eyes, I tried to distract myself by thinking about how I even got into this situation. but as I slowly started to think about everything that happened, one thing stood out.

Who… am I?

While trying to remember my past memories, the only thing that popped up was the gray world, not dead or alive, just endlessly walking without purpose or emotions, like Limbo.

My head started to hurt as I kept digging into my memories, realization set in. I don’t have any memories besides that world, nothing at all.

By the time I had realized that, we had already reached a small house on the outskirts of the small town, even though the house was lit, there were no voices coming from the inside.

Now in the light I could see the green-eyed man slightly more clearly, his eyes had black circles around them, the long black raven hair that was hidden by darkness of the forest was flowing out of his face-concealing hood.

As he laid me down in front of the door of the house, I could see his entire, bloody body. With a bloody hand he drew something on my cloth, he reached out to the door and gave a loud knock only to vanish with a small whiplash of air.

And just like that, I was abandoned. I’m sorry. a cry broke out from me, the feeling of my throat being crushed eased up as I let it all out. Was I born just to be a burden?

The door of the house suddenly opened up, silencing my thoughts.

At the open door of the house stood a young man with brown hair, he looked down at me with wide eyes and mouth, as he slowly picked me up, I could feel my ears burning red, I tried to make myself stop crying but it only made the choking feeling stronger.

Even though I couldn’t see because of my blurred eyes, I could tell that I was passed to someone else, then, slowly, and gently, the person holding me started to sing a beautiful lullaby.

Only after I cried my eyes out, I was able to see for a small moment the person that was holding me, a young woman with short dark hair, she rocked me back and forth, never taking her eyes off me, as if I was going to vanish if she took her eyes off me.

I could feel my eyelids getting heavier by the moment. I tried to keep myself awake, only to fall asleep with one final thought going through my mind. I’m sorry.
