Chapter 7: New roommate

Chapter 7: New roommate

George didn’t understand the situation and didn’t know what Levy was talking about. What was there to deceive? He was asked to make five batches of wine like the manual told him and that was exactly what he did.

George had never seen Levy this angry and got a little afraid. His heart started to beat rapidly and his head started to spin. He wanted to walk away but he couldn’t move. So he put his head down and tried to calm himself down.

The anger in Levy got worse seeing no reaction from George and he started to pace back and forth “Do you think you have the wits to trick me, boy? I have been doing this job longer than you have been alive. I don’t care how broken or pathetic you are; I won’t let you cheat me. I would have already kicked you out of the city if you weren’t a student of Solomon. Now scram out of my workshop before I give you a beating.”

George didn’t even listen to what Levy was saying. His panic attack got worse and he felt like he was about to pass out. So when he saw Levy make the sign for him to leave to ran out of the workshop with as much speed as he could muster.

He ran to the big grass field next to the winery and had to throw up. After that, he started to regulate his breathing and he felt a little better. George didn’t like this part of himself, he wanted to be brave but his body would react in a way he couldn’t control.

After a while, Liz came back and saw Levy sitting in his usual chair with an angry look on his face. So she went to ask what the problem was and was surprised by his answer.

“It’s that boy George, he wanted to cheat me out of money. He looked like an honest kid and I felt bad for him because of his situation, but I will rather die than let anyone take advantage of me.”

Liz gave a confused look and tried to understand the situation. “What could he have done to cheat you?”

Levy gave an annoying look and tried to explain. “He had luck and made one good batch and tried to pass the others of as the same batch. When I tasted the cups I knew instantly that there was virtually no difference between the five cups. Let alone him not even a third-year student can’t make wine that consistently.

Too bad, he had real talent. The first batch was already just as good as a beginning winemaker.”

Liz was surprised and went to the bins to take a sample. She drank from the first batch and was surprised by how good it was. Even she couldn’t make a batch taste like that even after two years working as a winemaker.

This was of course because she didn’t want to take winemaker as a profession even though Levy had told her that she had a talent for it.

Liz gave a quick smile not knowing how someone like George could make a batch of wine like this. “It seems like even dimwits can bring around a wonder.”

She wanted to leave to her curiosity made her try the other batches as well. She went to the second batch and got a little wine from it. She took a sip and her eyes almost popped out of her head. The taste was identical. She looked at the batch to see if she didn’t drink the first batch again by mistake. She quickly washed her mouth with water and drank from the other three batches. Every one of them tasted exactly the same. Liz didn’t know whatever to laugh or cry, how could someone who was making wine for the first time make five high-quality batches of wine on his first try.

Liz started to panic thinking about the events that had happened and went looking for Levy. Seeing Liz run to him made Levy a little bit surprised. He had never seen Liz excited about anything. She was out of breath and told Levy about her discovery.

Levy didn’t believe Liz when she told him that every batch tasted the same. He was a winemaker for a long time and had never seen anyone make five identical batches on the first try. Most new winemakers would make mistakes would make a lot of mistakes on their first try. And even if they did everything right they would fail at the last part when they had to shut off the fermentation bins at the right time. The bins were made by master craftsmen and time would move a lot faster in the bins and even one second could change the taste drastically. The ingredients and the breathing of the wine would also change the taste of the wine drastically.

Even though the taste of the wine was good it was the consistency that made him confused. Just as he was thinking how the consistency could be this good without the winemaker job he came to a realization.

Levy hit himself in the face and had made a stupid look. “Liz go get the kid, the way I treated him was pretty harsh. I wanted to teach him a lesson and let you pick him up tomorrow. But it seems like I made a big mistake.”

At the same time as Levy was drinking the wine, George came back at the academy. He didn’t feel good and was trying to calm himself down. He went to his room but the door was locked. He reminded Solomon’s letter and went to look for him.

He arrived at his door and knocked two times. Solomon told him to enter and he went in. They talked a little about how his first day outside of Nash went and how it felt. George explained his situation and how eating everything was impossible. Solomon gave him a few tips and told him where his new room was. He told him to ask Grandpa Wilton to help him if couldn’t find it and told him to keep up the good work.

George didn’t tell him about the situation with Levy. He didn’t understand it himself and didn’t feel like taking about it. The other thing he felt was rage, he had worked for a full day and was kicked out without any explanation.

George didn’t need grandpa Wilton’s help finding his room. He knew how the numbers worked and found his room pretty fast. He didn’t feel like thinking and just wanted to go to bed. He didn’t know what he was going to do tomorrow and how he was going to feed himself. But that was a problem for tomorrow and now he just wanted to sleep.

When he opened the door he found a middle size room with two beds and two desks. The first bed had custom sheets on it and there were clothes on it. So he went to the other bed and lied down. It was still early and the others were working.

But he couldn’t sleep and after lying down for a while he stood up and went to the desk on the other side of the room. The desks were old and were made from simple wood. The other desk had a quilt and books on it so he sat down on the empathy desk and started to read the winemakers manual. He wanted to find out what he had done wrong and understand the situation.

While he was reading the manual the door opened and a boy in blue clothes walked in. George kept reading the manual ignoring the boy entering the room. he was a little surprised by the way he was dressed and didn’t feel like talking anyway. The last thing he needed right now was to offend a Gully’s clan member.

The boy seeing George not react gave a weird look and went to his own desk reading a book about martial arts. The two were sitting there reading and before long Liz came looking for George. She didn’t know where his room was and had to ask Solomon. She was a little surprised that George had not explained the situation to Solomon and got a little angry as to why George didn’t try to defend himself.

After knocking on the door twice the boy in blue stood up and answered the door. “What do you want?”

Seeing the blue clothes surprised Liz and it took her a while to answer. “I’m looking for a boy named George, the teacher told me he was assigned to this room.”

The boy gave George a quick look and went back behind his desk reading. George stood up and went outside to see what Liz wanted to talk about. He didn’t want to talk about the winery and didn’t feel like explaining himself to Liz.

Seeing George with a cold look in his eyes made Liz give a long sigh. “Levy asked me to come pick you up. It seems like he made a mistake with the wine. It was the first time a newcomer has made five batches with the same taste and he thought you had cheated.”

Hearing Liz tell the story made George even angrier. He could accept it if it was his fault but it was Levy who made the mistake. And instead of coming and apologizing he had sent Liz to do the dirty work for him.

“I’m tired and want to sleep, tell him that I will see him tomorrow.” After saying that George closed the door and went back inside. Liz had a weird look on her face seeing George react in such a calm and cold manner.

She started to knock on the door again trying to change his mind. But George didn’t want to go back to that place, especially not tonight.  He felt betrayed by Levy and his thought on how everyone was as selfish as Vincent was confirmed by the way Levy had treated him today.

Liz didn’t seem to give up and kept knocking on the door. The boy in blue got angry and gave George a mean look.

“Tell your girlfriend to keep the noise down, I’m trying to study.”

Seeing George not react made the boy’s anger turn into rage. He opened the door and gave a mean look to Liz. “The mute doesn’t want to come out, so beat it!”

Lis had forgotten about the boy and got a little scared by his reaction. He was wearing blue and was a member of the Gully clan. Even though his status seemed to be low, he still had the power to make her life as living hell.

She waited in front of the door for another two minutes and after that made her way back to the winery explaining everything to Levy.

Seeing the situation not solved as he wanted too gave Levy a headache. He knew that he was in the wrong and had no other choice to wait for George to come back tomorrow.
