Chapter 5: research

Another two hours passed before Liz came to get George. It was already six thirty and the winery was closing. They would usually close sooner but because Liz had to wait for George to wake up this morning they were a little late so the winery they stayed open until she finished her daily batch.

Liz had a big smile on her face as she had done a great day of work and had just gotten paid. As she opened the door she saw George sleeping on the desk. She started to bite her lips again and making a first in her hand. She didn’t know why but every time she was with George he would annoy her.

When she reached him she took her fist and hit him hard on the head. George felt a sharp pain in his head and woke up. For a second he thought he was home and with Vincent so he changed his posture and didn’t move his head back up.

Seeing his reaction made Liz feel a little guilty. She turned around and tried to calm herself down.

“I brought you here to study not to sleep! If you fail tomorrow not only will you shame yourself but you will also bring shame to teacher’s name and the academy.

It's late, get up we are going back to the academy. Take the book with you and study a little before going back to sleep.”

Liz had given up talking to George and showed him the way back to the academy.

“Tomorrow we start at eight in the morning so don’t be late. Use the alarm command for waking up, it works just like the chip.”

After saying their goodbyes George started to walk back to his room. As he opened the door there was a note and a pair of clothes on the desk. It was a note from his teacher telling him that he was too busy with academy matters and that he didn’t have the time to arrange a room for him. And that he would make sure one was ready before the next session day started.

Another note had instructions on it about what kind of food he had to buy and which exercises he needed to do to strengthen his body. He told him that he shouldn’t expect an immediate result and that damage done over many years could not be fixed in a day, so he needs to be patient.

There was also a letter for Levy and three credits for him to use before the next session starts. George didn’t know why his teacher was so nice to him. He also knew that his teacher waited one session day to handle his forms because now he wouldn’t need to pay the room fee of one credit. It gave him a good but strange feeling knowing someone was looking out for him. He promised himself to return the favor one day and started to study the manual to not bring shame to his teacher’s name.

After studying for another three hours George decided to go to bed. He had already memorized more than fifty of the one hundred precipices and still felt weak from everything that had happened today.

Just as Liz had thought him he used the alarm command and he put in the time he wanted to wake up. He took off the clothes he had on and before he could start to think about Today’s events his eyes closed and he fell asleep.

The next morning, he woke up at exactly seven in the morning. George had visited the winery only once and didn’t want to be late on his second day. He also didn’t know how much time he had before he was sent out of NASH. After washing his face, he put on his new pair of clothes and started to walk towards the winery.

It was a little quieter in town but he could still see people running around working, the bakeries had opened and were preparing freshly baked bread and pastries. The smell of freshly baked bread hit Georges nose and he really felt like eating some. Even though players didn’t need to eat in Nash and didn’t get hungry it was still common for everyone to eat every day. Because of how affordable it is to buy food like bread and drinks like wine or ale. Rich clans even have their own chefs who prepare meals for them every day.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Especially the wine was really popular, having the same effect in Nash as it has in the real world people tend to drink a lot of it. Especially because I didn’t have the dangerous it has in the real world. The feeling of being drunk was simulated by Nash itself and players didn’t get any brain or liver damage, physical addiction is also not possible.

For one credit you could get one hundred pieces of common bread or nine liters of wine so players only needed to buy it once in every couple of session weeks and could enjoy themselves with good food and drinks every night. But it wasn’t a luxury George could afford being a newcomer and already three credits in debt.

Arriving at the winery George started looking for Levy. Solomon had asked him to give him a letter and he didn’t know how much time he had before he was sent out today.

After he found Levy and delivered the letter and waited for his instructions.

“What! That’s what I needed, a broken boy. If only I hadn’t asked him a favor back then, I wouldn’t be stuck here with a broken kid and no time to spare.”

Levy didn’t realize he had yelled and looked at George with a little shame in his eyes. Seeing no reaction from George he signed and started to think what he should do.

“It seems like you will disconnect soon, so it’s not possible to make wine today. Your master asked me to send you to the library to buy the beginners guide, I don’t have the time to take you but here is a map of the town and you can find the way on your own. This map is worth two credits so keep it safe and don’t lose it”

Not wanting to make Levy any angrier he took the map and went looking for the library. George had already seen the library before and didn’t need the map to find it. So after a little while, he entered a building that looked like a church but was filled with books.

There were so many books that someone needed years to finish them all. But it wasn’t that impressive to someone like George who had the library at the tutorial world at his disposal for so many years.

Looking around he found a young girl sitting behind a desk reading a book. This was the quietest place in Wine town. It gave George a good feeling and he started to walk to the city worker that was organizing books.

“Excuse me, I would like to buy a beginner’s guide.”

The city worker started to came down from the ladder and started to walk towards the counter. After buying the beginners guide George started to read it. It told many basic things that George had already experienced and talks about many things George wasn’t interested in at the moment. He could always read it later when he needed the information. Right now he wanted to know more about his legacy job and how it worked.

Unfortunately for him, he couldn’t find much. It only talked about how legacy jobs or classes were given to newcomers by Nash itself and that it had to do with chance and the way they lived their lives. George really liked history, he could sit and read history books for days without getting bored.

But it also said that only less than one percent has legacy’s and that it was really rare to come by. Legacies can also be passed on to next generations. It also talked about a master who had reached such a high level that could pass their legacy’s before their death.

After that, he looked around for information about secret names and found that it was pretty straightforward. Just as Liz had explained he could use the secret name to stay hidden and buy and sell his property. But he could also change his current name to his secret name if he wanted to. It talked about legendary assassins who would use their secret names on missions and nobody could every find out who the culprit was.

After that, he started to look for detailed about Nash itself. The beginner's guide confirmed his theory that Nash was only seven hundred and fifty-four years’ old. He started to think about the item he had seen and how it could be so much older than Nash itself. The feeling he got from the memory was nothing he had experienced before. He tried to remember something that could help him find clues about Keenan but nothing came to mind.

Not finding any answers he started to look around for useful information. He looked around for information about Keenan, Thaddeus Packard or even John but couldn’t find anything. He tried to touching many old books to activate a memory buy nothing happened.

After looking around for a while he gave up and decided to keep reading the beginners guide until his time was up. It talked about how old people were more likely to be city workers and those younger people had a higher chance of being sold as slaves. And that you need to be at least level ten before you can pick a class.

George didn’t like to fight but he knew that he needed to get stronger if he wanted to live an easy life. But he still didn’t have the finance or the strength to go on hunts and had to focus on his new job and strengthening his body.

George decided to put the beginners guide away and concentrate on the wine manual. The sooner he could start working the sooner he would improve.

After reading for another hour his sight started to get blurry and the capsule started to open. George stepped out and was in a place he had never seen before.
