Chapter 12: meeting the principal

Two session months went by from the time George entered Nash. George had just finished today's batch of wine and was waiting for old man Levy to check it on quality like every day for the past two months. But Old Man Levy didn’t show up and he decided to go look for him. He found old man Levy in the front of the store drinking a cup of wine after a hard day’s work.

“Seems like you're done for the day, good work like always. Come have a drink of wine with me, this wine Is a specialty of my hometown I made it this morning.”

George didn’t like to drink; he had tried it but didn't like the feeling of not having any control so decided not to drink again. Deep inside he was afraid that he would like it and become like the thousands of people who drank all night in the pubs.

Seeing George shake his head no, Levy quickly gave George his four credits and told him to go home.

“Old man Levy, why didn’t you check his wine today?” Said Liz sitting in front of Levy drinking a cup of the special wine Levy had made.

“There is no need, every day I taste it and it's always the same. It pisses me off how he is so consistent that even the flaws are there every time.”

Levy wanted to give George the Winemaker job but didn’t know if that would be the best decision. George didn’t put in a lot of effort and always made the same wine every day. He would make it just good enough to pass the test and didn’t try to make any improvements at all. In a matter of fact, Levy knew that if he really tried he would have masters second tier wine and be making third tier wine by now. Levy knew that George had talent that he could become a master winemaker one day but he didn’t like his personality and he only had a couple of invitations left.

George like every session day went straight to the library to get some books to read. The physical training, he had done for two months had worked really well and he could already stay in Nash for three full days and a couple of hours of the fourth day. He didn’t think that it would work so fast but to his surprised, he was getting stronger every day. The reason it was working so fast was because of two things. First was the standard meal he took every day, even though it looks like an ordinary meal it is specially made to nourish the human body for the capsule. By eating every day his body was getting the vitamins needed to get stronger and he was gaining weight pretty fast. The second reason was the training regimen that Solomon had put him on.

George really didn’t have anything to worry about anymore. He was making good money and was making enough in the first two days that he didn’t need to work the third one. At first, he didn’t have any money after paying for the room at the academy and his food in the real world, but after making tier two wine he started to make eight credits every session day so he started to save money pretty quickly. And having no interest in martial arts which is the most expensive thing in wine village, he could do the things he liked for very little money, like eating fresh food and reading books at the library. After spending some money on clothes and a night lamp for reading he still had around two hundred credits left. This was an amount that would make most students jealous and even bring thieves to his house if they knew about it. The truth was that George was pretty lucky with his job, and that he could master making tier two wine in such a short time. Even Liz was only making tier two wine and she would average four out of five batches every day.

But even Liz is left with little at the end of the day. The only reason George had so many credits was because he didn’t spend any. For example, most students would follow martial arts class and join the daily hunt’s which alone would cost more than most people made every session day. And because of the high cost of the lessons most had to choose which one they preferred and would do the other one only when they came into money. Some even chose to go hungry to be able to do both.

George went to his room after he got the books and went straight to reading like every day. He would mostly read fiction or random books about many different jobs of the past. He had already finished the wine manual a long time ago and hadn’t touched the skills and its uses book yet. George didn’t want to train in martial arts so what was the use of reading the book anyways. The boy in blue was sitting at the other desk and was reading as well. They were the ideal roommates and didn’t interact with each other. After almost two session months George still didn’t know his name or who he was. He would see him training every day in the training yard alone and to be honest wasn’t interested in who he was and why he tried too hard. He was just happy that he didn’t bother him and use his status as a noble to order him around.

George had trouble sleeping and would sometimes skip sleep and just read. At first, he thought the boy in blue would protest because of the light, but it didn’t seem to bother the boy and he could just stay up all night.

Levy had offered him to work the third day as well but George wasn’t interested. He was making enough money and used the third day to just read books. Sometimes he would go out for a walk and see what Tyler was doing. Tyler was working hard on becoming stronger but had the bad luck of no money and no teacher to train him. Everyone at the academy was talking about how he would go to master Percy every day and ask him to teach him but master Percy would just ignore him. For some reason, he didn’t like Tyler and would even charge him more for the passive skills he sold to everyone. So Tyler asked George to buy his skills for him so that he wouldn’t charge extra. George didn’t know if master Percy knew of this or not but it didn’t seem to stop him from selling to George whenever he wanted to buy a skill.

At first, George tried to cut himself from human contact as much as he could, but after a while found himself missing interaction with others and felt lonely. But he didn’t like to have people around all the time either so he decided to go and see Tyler whenever he was in need of company. It would have been easier to talk to his roommate, but he didn’t want to disturb their relationship. Even though the boy was always alone training and never had any visitors he was still a noble so he could make it difficult for George.

After reading for a while, George went to bed and with some luck slept for a couple of hours before it was morning. It was his third day so he had nothing to do. He went to the kitchen to get himself some fresh bread and see which kind of soup was on the menu today. George liked to eat and even though it didn’t do anything, it gave him a full belly and a pleasant feeling. The kitchen was pretty cheap and for just one credit you could eat three meals a day for a whole session week.

When he was eating his breakfast a woman started to approach him. This was the first time he had seen a woman teacher and unlike the other girls who were just sixteen she was older and even George had to admit that he had never seen a woman so beautiful.

“You must be George; I have a message from the principal. He wants you to meet him at his office after your done eating.”

She didn’t wait for George to respond and started to walk toward the exit. George had never met the principal and felt a little nervous. He didn’t know why a man of his stature would be looking for him. He had heard stories about the principal and some said that he was even respected by the other three clan leaders.

George knew where the teacher offices were and it didn’t take him long to find the principal’s office. The same woman he had met was sitting behind her desk working on a rapport. When she saw George she stood up and entered the principal’s office and it didn’t take long before she came back out again.

“You can go in now.”

The woman didn’t use a lot of words and went back to work. George felt a little annoyed on how little information he got and wondered if others felt the same way when they talked to him.

When he entered the room he found a middle aged man sitting behind his desk. He wore sloppy clothes and even had an odor to him which was most uncomfortable. George was thinking of possible situations and preparing for every situation got caught off guard and didn’t say a word. He didn’t know why, but he was expecting an old wise man sitting there with a long white beard like he had read in most of the story books.

“Come in and close the door, my assistant doesn’t like it when I leave it open and she has to stand up and close it. She is the best assistant I ever had but she just doesn’t have any personal skills. I swear woman are too arrogant these days, how dare she ignore me like that. I mean I’m the principal of this school and deserve some respect, instead, she just keeps looking at me like I killed her father or something. Luckily for he, I’m not because if I were her father I would teach her a lesson. Yes, how beautiful it would be.”

The principal had a big smile on his face and George didn’t know what to say. For the first time in his life, he was speechless. He didn’t even blink and was staring at the principal in total confusion.

The principal seeing this started to caught loudly and moved on from the subject.

“Anyways, come and sit I want to talk to you.”
