A talk between friends

A talk between friends

Many hours have passed since Nathaniel's lucky encounter with the ship Sea Bird. In that time both he and June have explored the ship familiarizing themselves with its layout and greeted the hardworking members of Ferdinand's crew. The new faces were a nice change for the two after their short isolation out on the sea. Compared to the never-changing scenery of endless ocean the busy feet strolling through the hallway of the ship even as the evening sun began to set over the horizon brought a bit of cheer to the stressful time they have been having.

Amongst the many feet that traversed the halls of the ship below deck, a pair belonged to June. She wondered about and had been for some time. A small suspicion had grown in her mind about Nathaniel. It has been nagging her for hours bugging her to the point of walking in circles in front of the room Ferdinand provided for Nathaniel on the ship. They each got separate rooms Nathaniel insisted on it since he wasn't comfortable enough to share a room with June alone yet. Ferdinand didn't mind since he had plenty of space on board so the request was easily fulfilled.

June marched in circles until her steps came to an abrupt stop. She has had enough of waiting around for answers that won't come unless she bites the bullet and took the first step.

Repeatedly June knocked on the door and waited patiently for a reply.

"Who is it?". Nathaniel answered behind the door.

"It's me June. Can I come? ".

June nervously waited for a reply only to seeing Nathaniel open the door immediately to let her in without a question more.

After Nathaniel open the door June could see Clearly that Nathanael now wore a different set of clothing then he did previously. Both his and June's old clothes were shredded to bits they were basically rags. Captain Ferdinand incapable of seeing them dressed in such tattered clothing gave them some of his clothing to keep for free.

Nathaniel now looked quite stylish in his new outfit. He had on a pair of white silk tight jeans, a waist belt fashioned from recycled old bullet casings that hung low to his hip, along with a tight V-neck purple shirt, with a pink feather jacket draped over his shoulders.

June was so stunned by his attire that she forgot to say what was bugging her and instead said what was on her mind at the time.

"You look hot and did you change your face again?".

Nathaniel waved his hand in front of his face blowing cool air in this direction as he agreed with June's statement.

"Yeah well this feather jacket gets kind of stuffy so of course I'm sweating a bit. I didn't want to wear anything like this but Ferdinand insisted I try it on at the very least. Now that I have I got to say though it's not my style, Ferdinand does have good taste. As for my face, I had to do a few touch-ups to make it look more natural. You know bring down the swelling and whatnot. I think I did a pretty good job this time around".

June counter stated, "That's not what I-you know what never mind. So, you goanna let me in, or are we're just goanna chat by the door.".

"Of course come in silly we have things to talk about and by the way I like your new outfit as well.". The Nathaniel gave June a subtle wink as he led her into the room.

June wore a small blue mid drift shirt that exposed her slim tone waist. Paired with ripped blue jean shorts that highlighted her best features and exposed her smooth slender legs.

With June in the room Nathaniel got right to the thick of it, "All right now down to business. We are going to be dining with the captain very soon so we need to get our story straight. By that I mean we were never in Robindale. Never been there, never glanced in his direction, never heard of it understand".

June subtly nodded her head in agreement.

"Good! Now here's the important about our identities."

Nathaniel was about to go on a long tangent about the details of their fake identities when suddenly June voiced a concern.

"About all of our fake identities I have a question about that".

"Well then go ahead, shoot".

Nathaniel was completely laid back and relaxed as he was ready to answer any question that could possibly come out of June's mouth except this one.

"Who are you really?"

Nathaniel not sure he heard June correctly replied, "what?".

June not backing down stepped closer and jabbed her finger into Nathaniel' nose. "I asked who are you really 'Nathaniel' if that even is your real name"

Nathaniel was taken back, "June where is this coming from why are you asking me about my identity I told you who I was ages ago. Did you not hear me because you were stuffing your face again. There's no need to ask me any such thing". Nathaniel said while secretly sweating bullets.

"Oh, really Mr. Liar that explain to me why did you create fake identities for all of us".

In defense Nathaniel started, "To seem less suspicious and to make sure we are never connected to what happened in Robindale".

"If we are all supposed to be hiding our identities as you have stated then why did you change your face yet in the end tell Ferdinand the exact same story about yourself that you told me".

Nathaniel finding himself caught red-handed found it difficult to come up with an excuse to explain his actions. Even as he tried the words in his mouth just didn't come outright.

"You see I-um, uh. What happened was that? I am an unobservant idiot who got careless is that so hard to believe. There are a lot of moving parts in this lie you see so I messed up a bit with my identity and told him a bit of the truth about me. Mistakes happen that's understandable right.".

June smelled bullshit and she called Nathaniel out on it, "that's bull and you know it. You came up with a perfect lie for everything. Yet you just so happen to forget to lie about your own identity. From what you already showed me is that what most likely happened is that you are already lying about your identity that's why you had a slip of the tongue and didn't realize it until I pointed it out. So, are you going to come clean to me or not"

Nathaniel found himself at a loss as he tried to find the right words to defuse the situation. Using all of his talent and years of public speaking during his time in office Nathaniel believed he found the words.

"June I have nothing to say to you about this. My situation is my own so stay out of it. "

Nathaniel wasn't just going to reveal everything about himself to June just because she asked. So he decided to be upfront about it and told her to mind her own business.

A stream of anger rushed through June's body. It's swelled up in her chest till her emotions came pouring out.

" I'm not the best at taking orders but despite this I can do many things. I can endure many things but out of all those things it is the lies that get to me. It's the lies that hurt the most. I don't care if you lie to other people just don't lie to me. We've known each other for over a bit can't you at least trust me with something".

June look directly into Nathaniel's eyes and Nathaniel exchange the same look without flinching has he said, "No, I cannot".

June had a sad look on her face as she looked down then back up at Nathaniel her disappointment apparent.

"Then lie to the people on this ship by yourself".

June stormed out of the room slamming the door behind her. Nathaniel heard her stomp away and could only let out an exasperated sigh at that moment. "And the problems just keep rolling in lucky me". Feeling the drain of the trials that his journey has placed before him Nathaniel's eyes grew heavy adrift they met his own reflection in a mirror. With a downcast expression the wretch of a man standing in the mirror mumbled softly under his breath, "Nathanial you fool". Before turning away and leaving the room out the door.
