Elise and Moire exited the locker room, and as the door closed, Moire spoke with a gleeful grin, “Partners, huh? I’m glad to be working with you.” Elise smiles back at Moire, as she responds with a nod. Moire looked down the hall, in both directions, before asking, “Which direction first?” Elise looked down the hall as well, wondering the same question, at least until a Nexil entered the hall, the rank of Captain proudly emblazoned on their uniform. Elise brings her hand up to her head, saluting honor, which causes Moire to do the same. The Nexil approaches them, and while passing them speaks, “Elliot, you’re coming with me, I need to speak with you before you get cozy.” Elise seems startled, but responds and begins to follow, “Yes sir, is it fine if my partner comes along?” The Captain answers as they keep walking, “Yes.” Moire drops her hand and begins following.

Soon, around a few corners and up a flight of stairs to the second floor, they find themselves in front of the Captain’s office. The Captain speaks as they enter the room, and head for their desk, “Come in. We have something to discuss. Close the door as you do.” Elise was worried they had done something problematic already, but did as ordered, entering with Moire, who closed the door behind them. The door closes, as the Captain takes a seat, and speaks, “Take a seat, as you do I shall begin my questions and probing.” Elise begins walking to one of the two seats, Moire following suit. The Captain speaks, “Elliot, you are a Mage, correct? Evoker?” Elise nods in response, speaking calmly while Moire sits down in shock at this, “Yes sir.” The Captain continues their line of questioning, “You are the adopted daughter of the late Sergeant Major Tyler Elliot?” Elise nods again, answering in with a stiff “Yes sir.”

The Captain continues, “Do you know what positions he held in the Military Police, specifically the West Florencia Battalion?” Elise answers with an uncertain look, “SWAT Officer, Sir.” The Captain nods, then speaks, “Close, that was his main position. He was a pillar for many in 2nd Platoon, 3rd Company. You have very large shoes to fill, if you intend to do so. My next question, why did you join?” Moire looks very awkward at this point, it likely feels as if she is sitting in on an interrogation, and Elise felt that same way. She felt like she was being interrogated, as she answers, “To give back to the people who saved me, Sir. Take the hits that are meant for them, and save those who need our help.” The Captain nods slowly, before speaking, “A good answer. Righteous and a strong conviction. A separate response than that of your father, who simply answered he had joined because he had nowhere else to go. Are you certain you are not doing this just to sate that same feeling? To gain a feeling of belonging?” Elise answers calmly, “Maybe a little, Sir. But my main intent when joining was to give back the kindness I was shown by my father.”

The Captain is silent for a few seconds, before continuing, “Do you happen to know who I am?” Elise shakes her head, “No sir. All I know is that you are a Captain.” The Captain speaks with a cold tone, “I am Captain Osiris, Leader of SWAT Team Radium. Your father was one of my best men, and due to that I allowed him to bring you home from Operation Furnace. I will not treat you with care, until you prove you are worthy of my time and kindness. Prove you are as good as your father, or even better, then I may offer you the same options I once offered your father.” Elise shakes her head, “With all due respect sir, I don’t need your offer. I’d rather show my strength, than be lauded as the daughter of one of the best. Even if I do not reach my father’s abilities, I am going to work my hardest, and reach the highest rank I can, through my work.” Osiris chuckles to himself, confusing both before him, he then speaks, “We are of one mind. I will still offer it when I see you reach him.” Elise is silent, thinking of what to say as Moire speaks up, “Sir? I have a question.”

Osiris looks at the fluorescent pink catgirl, as he responds with a quick nod. She asks the question, “Why?” Osiris’s metallic face remains still, but he turns his head slightly, indicating his questioning of her words, not fully understanding why she asked such a question. Moire continues, “Why inform her of this offer before she reaches that point?” Osiris speaks, his tone warmer than it had been, “Because I was the only one to vote against allowing her a higher rank, and even voted against allowing her into the Military Police in the first place. It is only fair I give her the same options I did for her father, if she can surpass him, and prove his final request of me to be unnecessary.” Elise speaks immediately on hearing this, asking her own question with urgency, “Final request? What final request?” She sits forward quickly, leaning towards Osiris, wanting to know what her father had said to Osiris before passing. Osiris responds calmly, “To not allow you into the Military Police. To let you live a calm life. So expect hell, Private. We will not go easy on you. You will see that which you will not ever forget. You will face enemies who you will have to end. You will find yourself burning inside, and when that happens, I say quit.”

Elise slides back into the chair, taking these words in, as Moire speaks, “With all due respect to the dead, and yourself Sir, that’s her choice. Damn that final request, if she wants to do this, let her. Don’t make it hellish. Let her do her part, since that’s what all Andromedans do. Even the civilians.” Osiris speaks in response, “You misunderstand, May. I won’t be doing anything. This job is far more demanding than you think. You will see terrible things done to innocent people. You will see death on a regular occurance. You will feel danger encroaching on you often. This job is hellish. First responders are always in danger. An EMT minding their business could be hit by a drunk driver and killed while their coworker and friend is tending to a different drunk driver who is bleeding out. A Firefighter may find themself running into a burning building, only to be trapped inside and barely get out, now barely able to breathe due to faulty equipment. And us? We could find ourselves unknowingly entering the middle of a gangwar, and taking a round to the head. Is saving a life truly worth your own? I would say yes. That question is what you two need to find out-” The radio on his desk comes to life, and a voice calls his rank and name, then the code “10-18”. “-because if the answer is ‘no’, then you need to quit as soon as possible. That’s all, you’re dismissed.” He grabs the radio and presses the button, speaking into it, “10-5.”

Elise stands, motioning for Moire to exit with her, as a response comes through Osiris’ radio, “There will be a vigil for Andromeda-5. Several personnel that have worked directly under him for a time are requested to stand vigil. You will be Radium’s sent personnel. Over.” As they exit and begin closing the door, Osiris speaks, “10-20? Over.” The response was quick, “Palace. Over.” Osiris answered immediately, “10-4. Out.” The door closes, and Moire speaks, “That was something. You feeling okay?” Elise nods quietly, before speaking with a small sigh, “Just wondering if I made the right choice joining.” Moire pats her back softly, while stating, “You did. You’ve got the best reason out there. It's a more detailed version of what he said.” Elise shakes her head as she begins heading to the stairs, “On a surface glance. But the question still applies. Is my life worth someone else’s? Or is my life not worth someone else’s? If mine is worth more, then why do this? It's completely against why he saved and adopted me. I would be wasting the chance he gave me to live a good life. I didn’t think about that.”

Moire frowns at her, then grabs her shoulder, stopping her from going forward, before turning her to look her in the eyes, as she states firmly, “No life is worth another’s. Everyone is equal in value, because we are all people. Think of it this way instead, you’re safeguarding lives with your own. It may end up throwing away the life you were given, but if you can save more than one life, it's a net positive for good.” Elise is silent as she stands still, listening quietly, and watching Moire’s eyes. As Moire lets go, Elise answers with a saddened smile, “Thank, Moire. Let's get back to touring the station.”

Main Unit: Rebellion Special Operations Command (RSOC)

Standing quietly within a dark locker room, SOF Helix watched the screen that was only displaying static, and their Commander was getting annoyed. She could have been preparing for an operation during this time, and she would not have missed anything. What was so important that she was ordered to watch the screen with her troops? Was it truly so important that they could not hear about it later? She was about to dismiss Helix, against orders, but the screen finally changed, revealing the Resistance’s symbol, as a robotic voice spoke, “Attention, Attention. This is not a drill. Turn your attention to the screen, as this emergency broadcast begin-” The voice is cut off, as the screen changes, revealing an image along with a slightly deafened voice. The image showed the Andromeda’s Palace, while the voice spoke, “-Haven, Andromeda. Darkness has fallen on both the city and the nation as a whole-” There is a subtle cut, “-Andromeda-5 has passed away.” The voice cuts out from static, as the screen shifts, changing to a different image, one of a Rebel raising the Resistance’s flag on a battlefield. “Clove Dakota, Andromeda-5’s daughter, is to take up the throne in his place-” The voice is cut, as another, far clearer voice comes through, “Attention all righteous personnel of the Resistance. Victory is near. We have outlasted the enemy, and we will see their lines falter to our might soon. Glory to the new order.”

This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work.

All in attendance remain silent, as they hear the hollow promise of victory. They hear a group cheer and yell out “Glory”, down the hall, but they knew what truly was going on. It was a stunt to bring up morale, and it seemed to work. The Major looks behind herself, seeing each of Helix looking around at each other, having noticed the subtle cut as well. She turns fully, and speaks, “Helix, it looks like I know what our next objective is. It will likely be to assassinate Clove Dakota. We will not be able to reach them during the time of her crowning as Andromeda-6, but we will achieve it nonetheless. While we do so, we should check in on our lost lamb, and bring her back into the fold. She may prove instrumental.” The members of Helix seem to understand, and begin to stand, just as a figure enters the room. Her draconic horns betray her as a Dracan, and her flamboyant disregard for uniform reveals even more. Her skirt sat still, as she pulled a small object from within a pocket on it. Catching the object as it is thrown to her, the Major speaks with a cold tone, “I’m assuming these are orders from Command, Aurora?” The Dracan nods in response, before walking away.

After Aurora had left, the Major mumbles to herself, “Damn mute Dracan.” She looks at the small object and presses a button. It opens, revealing a set of instructions, almost exactly what she had told her personnel, but with more detail, including possible transport routes to Andromeda. She spoke, “Looks like I was right again, Helix. Get your gear, we’re leaving for Andromeda.” She turns and begins moving as the rest of Helix begin opening lockers and grabbing equipment. The Major smirks to herself as she states, “It's been a long time. I wonder what hell I can cause.”

The club was silent. Once a beacon of party and good vibes at all times of the day, it sat cold and silent, the only individuals still standing within were Enzo’s more dangerous underlings. He sat quietly on the velvet couch that was set in this semi-private room, looking out over the dance floor and empty DJ stand. He heard the person across from him clear her throat, causing him to look at her. She was a female Lestis in a rather revealing red dress, her brown hair was pulled into a ponytail. He grabbed his wine and took a sip, before asking, “What did you want, Girly?” She looked annoyed at him, as she moved her glasses up the bridge of her nose, “You know exactly what I want, Enzo. It may be a day of despair, but the underworld continues to revolve, perhaps even faster than it had prior.” Enzo begins to glare at her, as he states, “I’m not joining the Family. I got out, and managed to leave without any bad blood. Not returning, but you can be sure as hell I’m not going to join any other factions. We’ve been over this, you dumb bitch.”

She slams the table in anger, “You got out because I vouched for you! I gave you a favor, and now you repay me this way!?” Enzo continues to glare at her, as he responds coldly and calmly, “I don’t care. I’m not going back. This is a nice life I have, and if you dare to poke it with a knife, then you’re going down.” She grits her teeth at him, before stating, “You bastard.” Enzo takes a sip of his wine again, before stating, “I don’t care what you think, Koria. I’m living my life, and I don’t care who tries to disturb it. If they do, I’m going to take them down. I already pissed off the military, so much so that they discharged me. So don’t push me, because anyone else is just a footnote.” Koria stands quickly, invigorated by her fury. She speaks very coldly as she walks away, “You had best watch your back, you bastard.”

Enzo speaks as she walks, causing her to freeze in place, “I do miss you though. Wish each day you’d come back to me, and we could live a peaceful life away from the Family and the blood they make you spill each day.” Koria turns her head to look at him, glowering at him in anger, as she states, “Then you should have returned. Goodbye, I won’t see you again.” She continues walking, her dress fluttering slightly with the pace she was moving. She went down the stairs at a rapid pace, and as she crossed his vision again, he couldn’t help but notice what he thought may have been tears. Another heart broken, and another love gone. With a sigh he called out, “Lottie! Turn on something energetic, but orchestral!” He heard the red cloaked Wolfgirl respond just as loud, “I don’t think we have any of those!” Enzo calmly responds, “Playlist’s in my office! Label reads ‘Koria’!” The loud slam reveals Koria had heard that last bit, and he smiled softly, happy to have gotten one last gesture out to her.

After a few minutes, an energetic orchestral song begins to play. Just what he ordered. He looked to the stairs as he saw someone coming up them. The grizzled and muscular Human approaches, his suit heavily tailored, and clearly armored, with his sidearm on his hip. As he approached, Enzo spoke, “What’s up, Luke?” Luke takes a seat across from Enzo, and speaks as if talking to someone who wasn’t his boss, “You need to get a handle on your relationships. Could come to bite the Nova.” Enzo smirks sadly, before responding, “Sure, I could. But they each know if they dare to fuck with us, we’ll hit them with ten times the hurt. Like we did to Los Creadores de la Libertad. Don’t quite like Rebel sympathizers, but I won’t mess with them, unless they mess with me first.” Luke grabs Koria’s drink, which she had not touched, and examines it. Then he asks, “You didn’t spike this, did you?”

Enzo chuckles, “Sure I’m shady, but I know not to drug a lady. You’re fine. She didn’t drink any, nor did I spike it.” Luke just downs it all, trusting his Boss’ words, only to start sputtering and coughing after he hears Enzo state, “But I wouldn’t tell you if she spiked it.” He smirks mischievously as Luke looks at the glass in worry, then at Enzo with irritation. Enzo begins laughing, only for him to calm down quickly, and state, “No, she didn’t. If she was that desperate to get my attention she’d do something less stupid.” Luke frowns at Enzo, and then shakes his head as he speaks with annoyance, “I hate your jokes sometimes.” Enzo happily smirks before saying, “But you enjoy the workplace. Speaking of, how’s the new hires?” Luke nods his head towards the dance floor, where two of the new hires were standing, talking to each other, while Lottie stalked the shadows past them, her red cloak giving away her position. Luke then says, “They’re getting along well, especially with the others, but Lottie’s keeping a wide berth.”

Enzo nods, before stating, “Lottie’s always been that way. Remember when you two were new hires? She stuck far away from everyone, and especially you.” Luke nods in response, remembering that time clearly. Enzo then starts to sit up, before he states, “I’m thinking of actually touching the underworld. Kick the bastards around us to make them know we don’t want them around. Thoughts?” Luke looks at Enzo and smirks, before stating, “Kick Los Creadores again? I’m in. And I can certainly speak for Lottie, she’ll want to do this no matter what. She’s got a more feral soul.” Enzo smirks as he remembers the first time he took Lottie and a few others to get food. She devoured her burger like there was no tomorrow. Enzo states with a smile, “Yeah. She’s definitely the most dangerous of us all, when you don’t factor in any Mages.” Luke smirks at this, before asking, “You sure about that? We could make it a competition. See who between you and her can get the most Los Creadores kills?” Enzo smiles happily as he states, “I would like that.”

Luke speaks, returning to a frown as he states, “Though there’s one problem with that. Surely you see it too.” Enzo nods, before smiling softly, “I’m going to look like I lied right to her face, and that’s something I’m willing to deal with. If she really knows the new me, like she did the old, then she’ll know the truth. The true problem comes not from the Donna, but from the Capo. If he decides to come at us, we’ll have one hell of a time trying to survive. You all are free to back out now, but once things kick off, I’m gonna need you all.” The two hear a voice underneath them, coming from the floor below, as the music dies down for a switch to a different song, “You joking, Boss? We’re not abandoning you. The Nova’s rising, and we’re phoenixes soaring up with it, right newbies!?” The two new hires look over, confused and startled at suddenly being called. They do not respond, but the individual who had spoke continues, “That’s a yeah!” Enzo smiles happily, as he responds, “Don’t just talk for them, Fawn.”

Enzo begins to stand up, as he looks Luke in the eye and speaks, “I plan to do that in a few hours. Probably around when the burial begins.” Luke nods in response, understanding, as he smirks and says, “I’ll gather up a few of our people, Lottie included.” As Enzo walks away he says one last thing, with a serious tone, “Volunteer only.” He enters a door to the side, as Luke begins to stand. Finishing off his wine, he walks down the hall, and opens a door labeled “Boss’ Office”. Entering, he closes the door behind himself, and walks to set the empty glass down on the desk. He does some small stretches, before he approaches a closet. Opening it, reveals a set of body armor plates, a civilian plate carrier, a spare suit, a box of 5.56x45 ammunition, a rifle chambered in 5.56x45, a falchion in its sheath, and a cloak hanging from a hangar reverently. Enzo picks up the body armor, and starts putting plates into it, before setting it on himself and fastening it. He grabs the ammunition, and opens it, pulling out several magazines, and placing them in the three holsters. He grabs the rifle, putting a magazine inside, and ensuring the ejection port cover is closed with the safety on.

He sets the rifle down, then reaches for the cloak, taking it off its hangar, and he slips it on, before pulling off his belt, and putting it right back on, but instead through the coat’s loops. Tightening the belt, he finally reaches to the falchion, and takes it, sighing with a small pang of guilt and sadness. He then attaches it to his belt, and speaks, “Alright, Sergeant Mcloud.” He pops his neck, before looking at the two things he was allowed to keep on his old service cloak. His rank insignia, and the flag patch. Then he looks down at his chest, frowning heavily at the Veteran emblem that sat in place of any medals or commendations. He picks up the rifle again, before closing the closet, and turning to his desk. He walks to it, and sets his rifle down again, before opening a drawer and pulling out a paper. He’ll need it if he gets pulled and asked why he’s carrying a rifle and falchion.

Enzo was standing before a group of three. One being the salt and pepper haired grizzled old human Luke, another being the light gray haired wolf-eared and tailed human girl Lottie, and the last was a young man with mechanical parts. Enzo spoke, raising an eyebrow, “You’re that new guy, right? What’s your race?” The voice that responded was clearly synthesized, as he responds, “I’m a Nexil, Sir.” Enzo shook his head, “No need for the formality. I’m just a Vet running a club. Call me Enzo, or call me Boss. No ‘Sir’, ‘Sergeant’, or ‘Mr.’” The Nexil speaks immediately, revealing a slight Weiss accent, “Yes si-” He shakes his head, then tries again, “Okay, Boss.” Enzo nods in response, “What’s your name, Nexil? I may be the boss here, but I rarely am the one calling the shots when it comes to new hires. That’s Luke’s job.” The Nexil responds immediately once again, “Alex. Alex Volf.” Enzo asks a question, “You from one of the other Federate Nations, Weiss Defensive maybe? Which means people who have seen your name first probably said ‘Wolf’ instead of ‘Volf’. Am I right?” Alex nods in response, causing Enzo to state, “I’ll keep with the proper pronunciation, since no one seems to ask how to pronounce names, or have no idea how most sound. Sound good, Wolf?”

Alex Wolf nods in response, happy to have someone actually pronounce his name right; a small reminder of home. Enzo then speaks, “Alright. Now that introductions are over, let's get to what I need to talk about. We’ll be striking the Los Creadores. A few years back they hit us, and we punished that. Let’s punish it for a second time, and dismantle them. The less dangers on the street for this area, the better, especially in this time of political turmoil. While the Military Police tend to their duties protecting the burial, we’ll clean up the streets a little. Lottie, you and I will be running a competition. Luke tell you about it yet?” Lottie immediately nods vigorously, clearly already excited to get going. Enzo continues, “That’s what you and I will be doing. Luke’s in charge of Alex for today, and you two will be sitting back in the vehicle, giving us instructions. That’s it. We’ve got about thirty to finish preparing. Get to it.” The three walked off, headed to get prepared, leaving just Enzo, who glances to the exit and waits.
