16. Bookshelf

Walking down the corridor, I approached my sister’s room. I was not far away when I saw the entrance to the library out of the corner of my eye. My interest was piqued immediately. Only a quick look. Afterward I would go find my sister. Entering, I was awed by the many books that were categorized on the shelves. I moved closer and skimmed over the titles. There was a book about everything you could think of.

Going through the memories of Aron, I came up with how we could afford such an expensive library while being so poor. Most of them were bought from one of our predecessors when our family was much larger and richer. Only a small part was bought during the last twenty to fourth years.

That supported the claim of the evil archmage that my family had a weapon against their plans. My family must have been much stronger in the past. At the moment, we had only a shadow of our past strength.

I was most interested in magic at the moment. My whole attention was caught by the book that was named introduction to magic. It was bound in brown leather. Unable to restrain myself, I picked it up straight away and read the introduction page on the backside. Forgetting that I had wanted to play with Lea I seated myself on the chair, placed in the room for exactly that reason. I put the book on the table in front of me and began to read.

The magic system in this world was divided into two groups. The first group was named primary magic. In there were all sorts of magics that were used to cast active spells, that would include elemental magic, summoning magic, black magic and so on.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

The second group was composed of affinities. So a magician was always able to wield one or more types of primary magics, and sometimes he had additional affinities of the second group. An example for the second group could be barrier magic, or magic manipulation. These affinities were normally linked to a certain primary magic.

As an example, you could possess the fire and wind element as a mage but only have the affinity for fire manipulation. Your power with fire would always be much greater than the one with air as you had much more control over fire thanks to the fire manipulation affinity. You could also have multiple affinities depending on your luck and ancestral bloodline. Because of that, the nobles paid rapt attention with whom they married their offspring.

Through making sure that the opposite party had fitting affinities and primary magics they increased the possibility for their child to inherit both of the parents' powers or at least a part that fit well together.

I was so drawn into the book that I only stopped reading when I heard a commotion coming from the outside. Listening to the sound of horses entering the courtyard, it reminded me of what my new mother had told me earlier. Our new bodyguards had arrived.
