He wasn't sure what he expected. Kagumi laid in his bed, feeling like he was in some sort of daze. He has been in school for 5 days now, though he would not question if someone said it's been 10 decades. He wasn't sure why, but he felt somewhat excited for his time at the academy. He thought of the possibilities of becoming stronger and possibly even finding a dream he may have. But so far, his experience has been filled with nothing but disappointment and mediocracy.
To start, he had the worst roommate he could have had. Sakimoto Michio. Kagumi and Yami could only ever agree on one thing, and that is that they found Saki annoying. Saki wouldn't comment about how she feels about her new roommate, but she definitely knew to keep her manners around him. While the dynamic between the two was mostly awkward, they did not have many problems with each other. Apart from the one time that she woke him up in the middle of the night because there was a spider in her room. That was the first time she was slapped on the back of her head.
School was about as fun as watching paint dry. Kagumi when he was a young child, around the age of 8, was very studious. He was able to learn the basics of magic, combat, and history on the world which allowed him to be ahead of kids his age and even above his age. Though one downside to this is that having to be taught things you already know will inevitably get annoying to anyone. And Kagumi was feeling the brunt force of that. He was placed in a class exclusively for nobles and highly skilled students. Within this crowd, Kagumi decided to just be slightly above average in order to not draw attention. That plan was quickly shut down when he was publicly announced as a perfect scorer on a prior knowledge test they took at the beginning of the year. After that, he received offers from all kind of noble families to tutor their children, all of which were coldly refused.
His class was average, at least in his standards, at best. He didn't have any problem with his class other than the fact that they were loud. When their magical skills were tested on the first day, only four people caught his interest. First was Saki herself, being one of the only people to be able to break the reinforced log that they used for target practice. She used a combination of wind and fire magic to decimate the log in a heap of fire. She was deemed the title of strongest in the class at that point, a title that she would take as reason to be the class 'leader'. Kagumi found the whole ordeal stupid which angered Saki since she wanted to try to get an emotion from him other than indifference.
The next person that caught Kagumi's attention was a beastkin, who he liked the most out of his class. She had dark purple hair and bright yellow eyes that were ferocious like a cat. Her ears and tail were a dead giveaway that she was a cat beastkin, a type of beastkin that was fairly rare. She wore a grey tunic with black shorts and a pair of noticeably old combat boots. He remembered her name was Furuya Shika, a rather nice name in his opinion. The thing that caught Kagumi, and the whole class's attention for that matter, was the argument she got into with their instructor. Everyone knew to be on their best behavior here, so seeing her argue with a teacher was shocking. They got into a fight about what types of magic are allowed. It seemed like she fought by coating earth and wind magic around herself while physically fighting, something commonly seen by beastkin warriors. But since physical attacks were prohibited for this test, she couldn't use that. Her stubbornness caused her to simply ignore the test entirely, something that made her the center of attention. Kagumi thought she was foolish, but respected her determination nonetheless.
The third person that interested Kagumi was the most generic high ranking noble child he had ever seen. He had blue hair that was slicked back with heavy gel, making it shiny. He had brown eyes and a sly grin that Kagumi felt the urge to punch. Even Yami, who was indifferent to every candidate, wanted to personally hurt him. He wore an expensive blue stripped tunic, a cape with his family crest flowing on his back. He had long black pants and light iron boots. He was taller than Kagumi by around 2 inches.

"The greatness of the Walton house shalt not falter. Be amazed by the power of the hero of this land, Jammilison Walton the Third! Rest easy knowing that this class is in good hands.", said Jamie, standing on a rock in the training field while striking a pose. Already gaining a nickname due to his overly long name. This proclamation from Jamie gained the immediate admiration of the entire class, apart from a few of the more pessimistic people. Kagumi was included in this cynical crowd, he felt secondhand embarrassment for him. He couldn't wrap his head around how someone could with such a strong passion. Jamie walked up to the dummy before shouting out the name of his spell.
"Water Release: Mermaid's Typhoon," he shouted before summoning a torrent of raging water from his hand. The torrent decimated a chunk of the log, causing splinters to fly everywhere. With a satisfied sigh, he stepped away from the field to sit down with a cool and relaxed demeanor, completely different from earlier. The whole class clapped for him, some even shouting praises at him. While walking, he noticed that Kagumi hadn't clapped for him. He somewhat felt offended by this and decided to confront him.
"Hey, twerp. Why aren't you clapping? You should be celebrating for your superior classmate." said Jamie in a cocky tone.
"I commend those who deserve it. Now sit down before you lose a finger or 5." said Kagumi in a chilling tone, releasing his magical output onto the field. Yami had to admit, that comeback wasn't half bad.
"You brat, you have some nerves to insult someone of my family. Who do you think you are?" said Jamie, now holding Kagumi by the front of his shirt. He was holding back the urge to punch him, but Kagumi's blank stare pushed him over the limit. He put up his right arm, preparing to throw a punch Kagumi's way. He was shortly stopped by Kagumi's hand on his neck, cackling with lightning magic. He stayed there, unable to move due to his paralysis. The whole class stared in shock at the person they just praised, taken down in one swift attack.
"Take your idiot of a hero away from here. He should be fine in around 5 minutes." said Kagumi, starting to walk away from the silent crowd and towards the empty seats where Furuya sat by herself. The whole class scurried to get Jamie to a chair, all while more of his pretentious classmates tried to get the instructor to kick him from the test.
"Jammilison incited violence against Kagumi, and Kagumi retaliated accordingly without serious harm. This is a lesson for everyone, as long as the fight is in the training grounds or in within the bounds of self defense, it is allowed. You all must grow up and learn to cooperate with each other, and learn how to be independent and fend for yourself likewise. Apart from that, next participant up please. Make haste." said the instructor in his lecturing voice. The whole class, while still angry at Kagumi, decided to leave the matter until later.
"You did a damn good job shutting that prick up. I think we'll get along just fine." said Furuya, patting him on the back. They both seemed to have a mutual respect for each other.
"Whatever. I only did it out of self defense. Don't mistake me for a fool that would pick unnecessary fights, especially in front of a instructor." said Kagumi, trying to end the conversation quickly so he could go back to silence. He had a headache.
"Whatever you say, you emo shrimp." she teased, doing a gesture that shows their height difference. Even the ever so stoic Kagumi had to admit, she was starting to tick him off. He decided to humor her a bit and play along with the conversation.
"Do you want me to paralyze you, cat?" Kagumi said, putting a small amount of lightning magic into his hand as a warning. She raised her hands as a mock surrendering gesture before laughing. Kagumi, while not laughing, had a small smirk across his face. For once, he could forget about the demon in his head constantly torturing him.
Despite the seemingly brisk conversation they had, they both had the feeling that they were going to get along just fine.
