Chapter 9: Are These Lives Worth Protecting?

Chapter 9: Are These Lives Worth Protecting?

Federal Calendar: 21 July 2145

Hotel Royal Orbit, Room Number 356

What the hell? What kind of situation is this? I don't know what to do. In this hotel, there must be at least 5k people. I'm just a Rank C, and my chances of survival are minimal. Let's calm down and think.

I grabbed Sam's hand and held onto a broken window. Hanging on the 12th floor, I'm trying to keep both of us from falling.

"Alice, find a solution, damn it! Otherwise, we're screwed!"

[ Master, I'm finding a solution. Just give me a second. ]

I was also thinking, and then I had an idea. What if my cosmic space can store anything, including gases like oxygen? I thought of creating a space within my cosmic space where there's oxygen and no cosmic energy, so we can survive inside it. It might be a small space, but if i can save myself and other's too , it's worth a try.

"Alice, can you create a livable space as quickly as possible? I don't care about the details, just use whatever resources I have."

[ Master, creating a livable space in a few seconds is impossible, but I'll do my best to make it as fast as I can. ]

"Alice, we're in a desperate situation. hurry!"

I think there are currently at least 5,000 people in this hotel. If I can create a temporary space to save them and bring them to the ground, it should be sufficient for now.

[Master, I understand the urgency of the situation. We need to act swiftly to ensure the safety of the people trapped in the collapsing hotel. I will create a designated space within our Cosmic Space where we can temporarily shelter and protect all 5,000 individuals.]

Draining half of my mana, Alice used the Skill Creation ability. She focused her powers on creating a secure and spacious area capable of accommodating the endangered individuals. With reinforced boundaries and structural stability, the space was designed to withstand the forces at play.

[Master, the space is ready. It is a refuge where the trapped individuals can find safety for the time being. Please guide me on the specific actions you wish to take to bring them into this space and ensure their well-being until they can be safely returned to the ground.]

"Alright, I just need to wait for another 30 seconds so I can absorb a small amount of mana from my surroundings. This will allow me to create one more skill to aid in the rescue."

[Mana Conduit]

After activating this skill, the mana from my surroundings is directly absorbed into my body and stored in the cosmic space. Now I have around 6,000 units of mana.

"Alice, use the skill creation ability to create a skill that can scan people and instantly transfer them into the cosmic shelter."

[Master, given the increased mana you possess, I will create the skill as you've requested. It will be called 'Instant Transfer' and will require 5,000 units of mana. Here are the details of the skill:]

Skill Name: Instant Transfer

Mana Cost: 5000

Description:

With this skill, you can scan your surroundings and instantly transfer individuals into the secure shelter within our Cosmic Space. This skill utilizes mana, providing a swift and efficient rescue mechanism.

Usage: To activate the skill, concentrate your energy on scanning the area. Visualize the individuals you wish to rescue and channel your mana into the skill. They will be instantaneously transported to safety within the cosmic shelter.]

Now that everything is settled, it's time for the main task. First, I'll put sam to sleep. I don't want to reveal my abilities to others. Using my left hand to gently put Sam to sleep, I transfer him directly to the cosmic space.

I used my skill, [Shadow Cloak] to enhance my stealth and blend into the shadows, ensuring that my actions remain unnoticed. It's a sub-ability of my combat skill, [ Shadowbane Annihilation]

Now, using my skill, Instant Transfer, I can detect the locations of people around me. The situation is worse than I anticipated, with some individuals already deceased or on the verge of death due to the collapsing building.

I transferred as many people as I could save to the cosmic shelter, but unfortunately, there were still others trapped beneath the rubble or in critical condition.

After rescuing approximately 4,000 individuals, I was completely drained. I decided to teleport myself to the cosmic shelter as well. It was my first time seeing this temporary living space that Alice had created, and I couldn't help but be amazed by its functionality.

Curious about the space, I asked Alice for more information about it.

[Master, the space created within our Cosmic Space to shelter the 5,000 individuals from the collapsing hotel can be summarized as follows:]

Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.

[Size:] The space has been carefully designed and is spacious enough to accommodate all 5,000 people, providing them with safety and temporary refuge.

[Boundaries:] Robust boundaries have been established to ensure structural integrity and protect the individuals from external dangers.

[Dimensions:] The space measures approximately 100 meters in length, 100 meters in width, and 20 meters in height, offering ample room for the displaced individuals.

[Safety:] The space has been meticulously engineered to withstand the forces at play, prioritizing the well-being and security of those seeking shelter.

[Master, this is a temporary solution. Please proceed with transferring them to the ground as quickly as possible, as our current abilities do not allow for a permanent shelter.]

"Okay, Alice, how do I get to the ground from the cosmic shelter?"

[Don't worry, Master. You can use the Instant Transfer skill to scan your surroundings outside and teleport yourself to the ground, similar to teleporting from point A to point B.]

[Instant Transfer]

After scanning my surroundings, I chose a place to transfer myself. I found myself in the park of the Royal Orbit hotel. Still cloaked in my shadow, I remained unseen and undetected. To transfer the people outside, I needed 500 units of mana, which I didn't have at the moment. Therefore, I used my skill to absorb some mana from the surroundings.

[Mana Conduit]

Using the skill for just a second, I absorbed enough mana from the surroundings to proceed.

[Instant Transfer]

I transferred all 4,000 people to the park. They were shocked as everything happened in just 5 minutes. Unfortunately, around 1,000 people had lost their lives. The survivors were in a state of shock, with some crying, others praying, and many remaining silent. Those with medical knowledge attended to the injured.

"I was happy to save these people. I don't know how they will survive the upcoming apocalypse. This is just an earthquake; there may be worse scenarios. Everything happened so quickly. I went to a small location of the area and I put Sam down, removing my shadow cloak. I sat on the ground, contemplating what I had done. I wanted to talk to someone, so I used...

[Fourth wall]

Hey, guys. I don't know what you would have done if you were in my situation. When I was on Earth, I mostly read about anti-hero protagonists who didn't care for people or anything but themselves.

But now, I find myself in the same situation as the protagonist, and I have the power to save these people's lives. So I did it because if I hadn't, there wouldn't be anything left within me to call myself human. What about you guys? Have any of you not done what I did?

Well, I don't really care about unknown people that I don't know. It doesn't matter, though. If I have the ability and can save them, I'll do it. I can't change this aspect of myself, but yes, I save myself first. Everything else comes after me.

I'm not that good that I would sacrifice my life to save 4,000 people. I would let them die because I care about myself. This is my moral value.

However, if I can save them without sacrificing anything I hold dear, then that's good. But if not, then no, I would never do it. See you guys, I have some work to do."

[Deactivate fourth wall]

After talking to someone who witnessed my journey in this world from the start, it felt good. I observed Sam sleeping beside me and decided to wake him up.

"Hey, wake up, Sleeping Beauty," I said, pinching his ear gently.

"Brother, that hurts," he exclaimed, but then quickly remembered the dire situation we were in and realized we were now in a park.

"What happened? How are we alive?" he asked, seeking answers from me.

"To be honest, even I don't know. I just woke up in this park before you did," I replied. I knew my half-truth wouldn't be easily believed, so I pointed in the direction where a crowd of people had gathered to provide some evidence. While I was talking to him, I also activated my skill that allowed me to absorb mana from the surroundings.

Skill Name: Mana Conduit

Skill Description:Mana Conduit is a special ability you have that lets you gather mana from your surroundings and store it in a cosmic space. By tapping into the natural energy of the world, you can collect mana to harness its power for various purposes.

While I was storing mana in my cosmic space, I started thinking about why I couldn't activate this skill all the time. But then I remembered that it's not possible because if I absorb too much mana from my surroundings, the people near me won't have any mana left for themselves. So I decided to wait for opportunities where I can absorb mana as much as I want without affecting others.

Suddenly, it hit me that I hadn't had a chance to ask Sam why on earth he was here. So I asked him right away.

"Sam, why are you in Royal Orbit?"

He replied, "Brother, I came here for a Hunter license. I traveled to Maple City with my friends, but they were killed when the World Orb announced the upcoming apocalypse. I managed to escape."

I asked, "What happened to your city? I know there are Magic Association branches in all cities, so why did you come to Maple City?"

After hearing my question, he fell silent for a moment and then said, "Brother, my friends insisted that I come here with them."

I inquired, "Does Aunt Mary know you're here? Do you know the current situation? Where is Aunt Mary?"

He responded, "Brother, I called Mom before coming here, and she said she was with Dad, heading to meet Aunt Ava at your home."

I realized, "I see. If they meet Mom, then Aunt and Uncle will be safe, at least for now. Dad will handle it. As for you, never go anywhere in the future without the ability to defend yourself."

He nodded and said, "I understand, brother."

After our conversation, I discovered that Aunt Mary was not at the hotel with him. Thank goodness she wasn't here.

If she met Mom before the apocalypse announcement, she should be safe. I care about Aunt Mary because she was kind to me during my childhood.

After waiting for some time, my mana reserves were full, so I decided to go to the nearby supermarket and pack supplies for the future. I had big plans in mind.

First, I thought about changing the name of my cosmic space. Calling it "cosmic space" didn't feel right anymore since it was an infinite and vast realm.

I said to Alice, "Rename the cosmic space to the infinite realm." This name seemed fitting because of its boundless nature. We initially called it the cosmic space because we didn't know much about it, but now things have changed.

[Changing the name of the cosmic space to the infinite realm. Master, it's done.]

"Hey, Sam, let's go to the supermarket," I said.

He nodded, and we headed towards the supermarket. While on the way, I contemplated that no matter what challenges lay ahead, I would handle them. I needed to hurry and absorb as much mana as possible so that I could create a living space within my infinite realm. This way, I could ensure the safety of my family and alleviate my worries.

We arrived in front of a large building resembling a mall, which appeared deserted and in disarray. Broken structures and lifeless bodies were scattered around. Half of the supermarket had collapsed due to the earthquake hours ago. Sam looked around, taking in the grim scene. I wasn't bothered by it because I knew he would witness even worse situations in the future.

"Hey, Sam, are you okay?" I asked him.

He said, "I'm okay, brother. I've witnessed my friends dying right in front of my eyes. Humans can be truly evil creatures."

His words stunned me, but I gathered my thoughts and responded, "Human nature has always exhibited both light and darkness. But remember, you're not exempt from that either. You once tried to kill me.

In dire situations, humans can resort to anything for their own survival. You and I are not so different from them. So, let's not label all humans as evil. There are also good-hearted individuals among them. However, it is true that there are some who can be rightly called evil. Let's continue on."

With that, we moved forward, acknowledging the complexities of human nature and the diversity of human actions.
