Chapter 9

A few days have passed on Larkana, some more peaceful than others. Our less… lady-crazy man of the trio researching at the Losdon Library. He quietly examined a world map which was very different from Earth’s. There were two continental-esque halves of land, rivers and lakes peppering them with blue. In the dead center was an ocean sized strip of water labeled “Jenun”. Midway between the Jenun was an island just big enough to be noticeable. Jamey looked just beside it to read, “Loch Ness Island” in fine print.

Loch Ness? Like that Papa Angus person and the “nessies”? He flipped through the book, consuming the information before turning to another book. He turned to the table of contents, afterwards moving to a heading about world myths and legends. He curiously flicked through the pages, there were multiple semi-familiar versions of Earth’s. One called “Chainten’s Caper Curse” intrigued him. It was about a dragon, Chainten, who did many mischievous things that most children would often think of doing. Because of this he was sent to patrol the skies for the rest of eternity. Yet this didn’t stop him from causing problems every now-and-again.

Sometimes, he saw people of other planes of existence just above him, annoyed by their ability to fly above him, he would drag them down into Larkana as an assortment of things to toy with the Larkanian people. A small snippet informed him of a type of amnesia named after this, people would appear with no recollection of the world and think everything to be abnormal, claiming it to be along the lines of “otherworldly”. Jamey silently noted the irony and moved on to another book.

Thunk! Thwap! The solid sounds of nunchucks striking the side of a wooden target gave off a barely noticeable echo. Shigeo whipped the nunchucks back and forth, watching the abrasions in the wood’s side deepen with every few strikes. Gale was carefully perched on a tree nearby, leaves occasionally coming to rest on her, eventually brushing them off once they land on a place other than her head. Athol had -in the past days- told the komirs to include their training space as a part of the patrolling area, resulting in a large flaming boulder slowly cruising about the area. Gale occasionally making comments on Shigeo’s techniques.

“Interesting,” a forgotten voice made the two jump, Gale the more frightened of the two.

“Oh Tomiko,” Shigeo pretended he wasn’t just jumpscared, “did Athol have you come get us for something?”

“No, I just came to watch. You don’t mind if I do right?” Tomiko asked curiously.

“Uh, sure I don’t mind,” the semi-awkward man answered. Tomiko sat down on a boulder near her, silently inspecting the plebe’s movements.

“Where’s the other one? Jamey I think?” Tomiko inquired again.

“ At the library,” Gale piped up after feeling Shigeo’s emotions towards the woman. Tomiko slightly nodded, her chestnut brown hair slick at her sides, she wore a navy blue irish-esque medieval dress only difference being the dress’ end was just above the knees. Shigeo slightly felt he was caught cheating on his girlfriend for another but kept this thought to himself. A while later Jamey returned to the area, off-put at the vice admiral’s presence.

“Ah, there you are, I wanted to talk to you,” Tomiko got up from the large rock’s face as Jamey came into the clearing. He awkwardly followed her out of view of the two others. The two -after a slight pause- went back to what they were previously doing.

“Yeah? What’s up?” Jamey asked as they seemed to stop.

“Where are you two going for the majority of these days? We need to focus and get back to Mayport,” Tomiko started to chastise the cadet.

“We’re just going to the town nearby,” Jamey said in a voice of slight worry.

“Well we're all having meetings about how to get back,” Tomiko avoided his gaze for a little at “well”.

“I just think it’s highly likely that we came here out of sheer coincidence so getting back would be more difficult. I do have some information from the library they have in town that might help though,” Jamey briefed the higher ranked woman.

“Ah, you’ll have to tell it to everyone during the meet-up then,” she half-heartedly smiled, walking back to the cave. Afterwards, Jamey stiffly turned to reenter the training area.

“What was she calling you out for?” Shigeo asked curiously as he swung his weapon about.

“She wanted to figure out how to get out of Larkana,” Jamey informed. This off putting the dog-nosed local nearby.

“Wow, she must have gotten a serious case of SIMI.” Gale chirped, Jamey referring the name to the myths and legends book.

“Simi?” Shigeo started to press.

“It’s a type of amnesia, it’s name came from a folk tale.” Gale answered.

“Ah, cool,” Shigeo became uninterested at ‘amnesia’.

“Yeah, I read about it while at the library. It’s strange that we don’t have it on Earth. Saying that makes me sound like I have SIMI, but it’s true.” Jamey continued the conversation.

“Yeah some people, such as myself, believe that people such as yourself have actually come from another world. The majority believe it's just a medical problem though.” Gale made minimal eye-contact with the two as she spoke as Shigeo internally swooned at the shyness.

“I want to get more information on this world since it looks like there aren't any simple or easy ways to get back to Earth,” Jamey said.

“Oh, that would be fun. I’d come with, if you'd like, I’m interested in the Doren half.” Gale commented.

“Wouldn’t we have to go through the Jenun though?”

“We can just get Papa Angus some shortbread and a ton of game for Loch.”

“Loch?” Shigeo piped in.

“Loch Ness, mother of all Nessies, her and Papa Angus are tied at the hip. He never leaves the island without her.”

“Interesting, when are we going?”

“I’d say tomorrow, I’ll inform Athol about it.”
