Chapter Thirty Two - The Consequences

Chapter Thirty Two - The Consequences

The next morning, Lily woke up to distant bells, dinging and donging as the sun grew bright and high before her eyes through the old wooden window on the other side of the room. She tried not to think about it but it was the first thing that came to mind. Lily didn't want to spend another day in that house so she just had to confess to somebody, to him.

She ran her hands beside herself but he wasn't there, immense sounds coming from below: sizzling, rattling, and running water made her acknowledge the fact that he was already up and about. She slept late so Jacob wanted to do something special for her, she always took care of him and he wanted to do the same. The bright morning, the warm custard soft sheets that clashed with the cool far-off sea breeze and a sound of heaven all in one. If Lily didn't think about what happened yesterday and prior to that, she would've had to pinch herself. It was difficult to enjoy the good things because the bad experiences always stuck in her mind but this, this was a great escape for a little while.

"Maybe I did have a good life." She yawned, curling up under the blanket. "But I can't have a good one now." She ended sadly. His twisted words could only be understood if read under a microscope.

"You can have a good life, Lily." There he was, the perfect man, the perfect husband, the perfect everything. He watched her, leaning by the door with folded arms. Jacob jumped on the bed, making both of them giggle into a hug. Everything about him, she grew to love. It was incredible, everything he did for her.

Holding the back of his head, she had to ask. "Is this real?" Lily bit her lip, crying with a smile.

"Course it is." He convinced her but Lily stayed skeptical. She didn't believe in perfect illusions, perfect pictures, a perfect life, a perfect anything. She couldn't accept this perfect scenario, it was deemed 'too good to be true', so she said. "There's something I need to tell you."

"That's funny," He said with a smirk, hugging her waist tighter. "because there's something I need to tell you. You should go first." He sprung up with excitement.

It made Lily sad to think about how devastated Jacob was going to be once she told him.

"Well?" He waited, his smile faded when he saw her face.

"It's about Taylor."

"Taylor? You don't think I~?"

"No." She stated, giving a slight gleam. "I know you would never do that."

"Then what's wrong?"

She couldn't hold it back any longer. "Taylor's dead." She said. "William killed her."

Jacob took a deep breath; he couldn't understand why Lily kept this from him, he didn't understand why this affected her so much but then he started putting the pieces together. "Did he, did he make you~?" He got up.

"Jacob."Lily was ashamed, she grabbed his shirt to stop him from leaving but she couldn't look at him when she said. "There's something else."

“Lily? Lily, what’s wrong?” Jacob’s voice; it was so calming like the lake waters, it always told her she was safe, she was safe in his arms. He lowered his head to hear her whilst holding her hands. She flinched as she turned away. “You can talk to me.” He insisted.

“Jacob, I, I can’t bear to be at their wedding. You don’t know what they’re doing to her… W-what he’s doing to her.” She fell into his arms and automatically soaked his shirt with her tears. All he could do was listen, thinking it was over but she then dragged her gaze back to him. “William, he,” Her lips trembling, it seemed for a moment she had gone numb until she took a good look at her husband. “He tried to..." These words came out like a silent scream, she couldn’t say it any louder than that. She felt her heart drop as the words came out of her mouth, she felt their happiness shattered into bits and pieces. Jacob went blank, he now had had a temporary disability, that of blindness. He was staring into nothing until he said.

“He what?” Jacob yelled, now filled with anger. Lily couldn’t believe how fast this man found his coat and, and his gun. She jumped up and ran up to him, grabbing hold of his shirt. “Oh, Jacob, don’t.” She could barely get the words out. “Jacob!” She yelled, running down the steps, gripping the door’s edge, staring as he turns on the engine and drives off.

Her eyes jumped around, she went from one end of the porch to the other, pacing around until she saw Mr. Cambelle, the baker’s husband in his van selling bread. She ran up to him, quickly wrapping her scarf around her neck.

“Mr. Cambelle, could you please drive me up to the Beckingham manor?” He gets to the driver’s seat and the man looks down at her.

"The Beckingham manor? It's such a far drive, lass. I'm sorry but I can't." He shrugged, driving off slowly before blowing his horn.

But Lily didn't give up, she ran back to the vehicle. “Please take me there. Please.” She begged, rubbing the tears away.
