Beast World #48.5: Sleepover

Following Letra's execution, a lot of the village came ready and bearing arms unaware of what happened, except Urla and Woh.

The sight of Michael and his bloody arm along with the dead body of Letra, got a few questions from the others. Although the answers came up vague, as the human seemed severely indisposed.

After Oinna and Urla did some quick magical patchwork, the young man was free to return to rest. He did so gladly, only after awkwardly apologizing for alarming everyone.

Things quieted down eventually and the human, along with Nushii and Vodra went to pick up the extra bed frames and install them inside his tiny shack, a small storage building repurposed for this longer ago.

As the two Hay-yen were laying down straw and furs for their bedding, Nushii seemed to stop a moment as her ears perked up.

"You hear that?" She asked looking at Vodra.

"Yes..." The more dead eyed Hay-yen began looking about as her ears guided her. She eventually located the source of the subtle sound coming from Michael.

The young human was laid back in his bed, dressed in a simple cloth shirt and a baggy pair of rustic fabric pantaloons, his eyes closed, his phone resting on his chest with jack based earbuds on. His breathing was slow as if he just fell asleep.

The two curious hyena like women then converged in on him.

"What do you think that is?" Nushii asked pointing a claw at his phone. "And why does it have tiny ropes going into the sides of his head? Those are his ears right?"

Vodra having her curiosity sparked as well, did one thing that would have been more expectable of Nushii. With a slow and adept hand she took out one of Michael's ear buds, holding it between three of her claws. The sound was more noticeable now.

"Oh! It sounds like chanting... do you think tis a spell?" Nushii asked a bit more warry.

Vodra took the small black source of the noise and she put it in her own ear which was much bigger.

A sinister slow rythm boomed against her ear drum as a booming voice then said in an echoing voice. 'Blood and guts and guts and blood and...'

Vodra recoiled a bit at how strong the sound was and the tone of the voice and instruments that she could hear made the fur on her back stand up. "Gods... if he wouldn't have told us he isn't a daeman and if I didn't see his blood to be like ours... I would have thought him to be one... how can he listen to this?" Vodra said holding the ear bud a bit further away from her.

Nushii gave the sound a quick listen as well before recoiling back similarly to her friend. The rather unique chanting made her more curious of the stone resting on Michael's chest, where the tiny rope was connected.

She picked up gingerly and noticing the other side being light up, she flipped it over. She saw writing she didn't understand, symbols akin to arrows, double tipped arrows, two gates. As she adjusted the magical object in her hand, her thumb pressed on the double tipped arrow.

Vodra would flinch as the sound from the black rope changed. Bringing to her ear the sound was completely different. The rythm was agressive and alert and a way different voice chanted. 'I know pain, I know dread...'

"Do what you just did again." Vodra said as she listened continously.

Nushii, tilted her head as she listened with one ear and pressed the double tipped arrow again.

'So baby now you feel like number one, shining bright for everyone...' And again.

'We have lost everything! We had to pay the price!...' And again.

'I'm a ghost living in hell, I'm sick of it all, yeah...' Aaaand again.

'Listen to the sound of a dying old man, Once he had it all, but it slipped out of his hands...'

As the two went through the various chants, they all seemed violent, agressive, some sorrowfull, but then they stopped, once a different type of sound began coming out. The sound was very gentle, rythmic and calm, possibly even serene.

'I fell down to Earth, from a hundred miles away and somehow, I still make it work...' A voice chanted along the song.

Nushii and Vodra pressed their ears together against the ear bud as they listened. This melody seemed to draw them. The two even closed their eyes and their forms leaned against one another as they listened.

"This is soothing... it feels... otherworldly entirely... like I am somewhere else... far away from what we know..." Vodra said sighing.

"Mhm... it feels... lonely, but... comforting somehow." Nushii added as she purred a soft cackle.

Suddenly the melody stopped, the sudden pause feeling premature. As the two Hay-yen flinched in reaction to this, they opened their eyes to see Michael, eyes open, with a finger on the center of the shining stone.

Vodra and Nushii sat still by his bedside, eyes wide and making contact with his, but not moving.

The young man looked confused at the two as he arched an eyebrow. "Uhm... so... just as a note... there's a second one, because you know... two ears." He said pulling the other bud from his ear.

"Oh... apologies for waking you." Vodra said setting the ear bud she held down.

"Yeah... that'll happen when you switch between a dozen songs in someone's ear. That's also why I prefer to loop one song, heh." The young man said sitting up on his elbows.

"Songs? So these aren't some sort of magic chants?" Nushii asked with the usual tilt in her head.

"Well... eh... kinda? Depending on which one you listen to, it can change your mood, maybe, possibly help you sleep or be more alert?" Michael said as he stretched and yawned. He then took his phone from Nushii's hand gently and he looked at the song title. "You two liked this one?"

"Yes. It was nice." Vodra said with a slight whine of embarrasment in her tone.

"C-can we listen to it as we sleep?" Nushii asked with a more begging whine in her throat.

"Hm... I am afraid if I put it too loud it could wake others, we'd have to keep it this loud at most. I don't know how well you'd hear it from your side of the room, but su- WHOA!" Michael yelped in surprise as the two Hay-yen dragged his bed from his corner of the room and then moved theirs to the sides of his.

After the two furred shack-mates made themselves comfortable in their beds, on either side of Michael's, they looked expectantly at him. The young man seemed at a loss for words as he kept staring at them. "This is revenge for that remark I made, huh?"

Vodra cackled lightly as she laid back on her bed, arms under her head. "You said you could handle sharing a bed with both. So we'll take you up on that, Mikel."

Nushii nodded with a laugh of her own as she laid on her side facing him. "Yeah! Now play it, please! I want to see if it makes me sleepy..."

Michael sighed defeated as he wrapped the ear buds around his phone, maxed out the volume and he just let the previous song play, making sure repeat is on.

The young man then laid back and closed his eyes, the phone on his chest as he took in a deep breath of air and just tried to sleep. The lyrics of the song would soon fade into the background as unconciousness took over.

At some point a feeling of slight dampness against the side of his neck would make Michael to jolt awake. The sensation akin to that of a bloody wetness, was quickly elucidated as being Nushii's snout pressed up in the space between Michael's head and shoulder, snoring softly away, massive clawed arms wrapped around his left arm, akin to a kid hugging a plushie.

On the literal other side Vodra was turned around, her back pressed against Michael's side, but her legs were tossed back over his.

After asessing the situation and calming down, the young man sighed as he laid his head back with slight annoyance. 'God, they're as bad as my sister when it comes to sharing a sleeping space.' He thought with a mental sigh, still... memories of a much younger self flooded his mind. A different time, one when darkness frightened him and when he used to share the same bed with a slightly younger sibling.

The uneven distribution of space, the messy positioning of everyone involved, the awakening in the middle of the night from getting smacked by a random limb, all of these thing as equally uncomfortable as they were, they brought a small grin on Michael's face. This was a familiar feeling, which brought a type of soothing comfort on its own.
