After the initial talk about the possible integration of Nushii and Vodra into the tribe and the execution of Letra, the tribe had covered another array of topics.
Gharna, Yenna, Azhul and Oinna recounted their situation at Road's Turn, the success they had selling the few samples of peelers they had as well as the rather problematic situation that rose from their success.
From their recounting some Apillian trade group known as The Silver Backs have submitted the peeler as being their own invention. Since the idea had nothing else like it existing on the market, it got accepted at face value and registered. The Creationist's Hall were starved for innovation and a registered idea meant another patent that can be protected for a small percentage of the object's sold profits. They were flexible, through them you could even arrange for specific producers and sellers to gain access to make and market your product. The more you did yourself the more of the money you could keep, but should you not have the means, this way you could still rake in a profit from being the inventor of an object.
"Well that is... fucked. Pardon my French. Ugh... figure of speech." Michael said after mumbling his surface thoughts on the matter out loud.
"R-right... ye it ain't exactly pretty. But it ain't all lost. The Hall allows submitting similar ideas if the new designs have additional features to em. Problem is they judge em case by case and the improvements need tha be functional in use, so we canne just slap some wood carved designs on 'em and call it a day." Gharna said with a snort as she took a swig of water from her water skin, while tending to some fish over a fire. This meeting has been quite extensive, so food had been brought up as needed.
"Oh-... that is actually convenient. Then we should be good. Not much to worry about, like I thought." The human said without much of a worry.
"What could ye improve dat design with?! Its a bloody peelin' blade on a wooden frame with a handle. It ain't exactly complicated." Zurra added as she herself eyed the cookinh fish from time to time.
"Simplicity is good. The common buyer doesn't want to waste time figuring out a tool, making it simple is one of its main strengths. We can give it two other though. Flexibility of use and longevity. Back home, my kind used to make stuff to last. We had pots or certain tools that would be passed from generation to generation. In the present we don't do that anymore. The things we make come in with a planned obscelence. I want us to do the opposite of that."
"Planned obscelence? That is a rather curious combination of words. Do elaborate." Urla said while sipping on a hot mug of tea.
"How to best put it... it means to make something with the intention for it to break at some point so the person that buys it comes to you for a new one." The young man said cringing as the words left his mouth, hating this concept with a passion akin to no other.
The tuskir surrounding him stood silent for a moment, but only for a moment.
"Aye... yer kin wins at being horrible." Azhul said while rubbing the side of her head as her brain processed the idea. "That is so shite, is unbelivable."
Runhar who was sharpening a handaxe with a whetstone sighed. "I can understand why it would work and why a merchant would do it, but it seems... so dishonorable."
"Yeah... lets not discuss about that too much. If the people here come by that concept by themselves, I'm ok with it, but I do not wish to spread that idea here." Michael said sucking his teeth, disgusted at the concept of being the one that spread 'planned obscelence' in this world. 'I'd be just as much of a piece of shit as the guy that invented Adds in the middle of videos. Man... he might have apologized for doing it, but I still can't forgive him... and I never even knew the guy personally! Yeah... don't want that hanging over my head until I'm dead.'
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
"Agreed. If I start seeing smiths making swords with the purpose of them breaking to get more clients... I will start killin' people on impulse a lot more..." Zurra sighed, as the old smith herself nearly gagged at the concept. "So... going back to yer idea boi..." she said looking at Michael, hoping to hear something better, that can wash that foul idea from her thoughts.
"Yeah... right. So. The design of peeler we sold was the most basic kind there is. First, most peelers also have a tiny shovel at the top of them, a scooper of sorts, or a cup, used to remove any sort of blemishes from the object you are peeling. It's mainly used when the rot or blemish in something is deep, but not encompassing the whole thing. Additionally, if we make the small support rods, at the end of the blades, just a bit shorter and if we change the design in the wood, we can make the blades removable. Pair that with steel blades as well... I would say it is a big improvement over the original." Michael said nodding as he spoke, feeling sure that it should be enough of an improvement.
"Hmm... we could also put a patent on da process o' makin' steel, after we confirm that tis doable." Zurra added as her eyes looked at Michael. As a shine appeared in the young man's eyes, she couldn't help but let out a few squealing chuckles.
"Yeah! Holy-... I forgot that steel isn't a thing here. We totally could. Then... anyone that wants to make steel for anything... they'll need to make a contract with us and if they are selling what they are making, we can rake in the money from that too! Jesus Christ..." The young human said, his mouth lightly salivating as his mind wandered.
"Psst... brother... yer mouth is drippin' whif drool." Yenna said nudging Michael, while he was seated and carving away at a small figurine.
"Ugh?! Ah- thanks... sorry. When a society is so extensively based on production, trade and commerce, we tend to see great opportunities like these with a predator's eyes. Heh." Michael said with an awkward laugh.
"Pftt... like we couldn't tell." Rok added while feeling mildly unsettled by Michael's reaction.
"Alright. So we'll be doin' tests on makin' steel and producin' more peelers. Looks like me forge will be burnin' up for a good while longer. Glad ye got those supplies for us tha use." Zurra said with an excited snort as she looked at her daughter.
"I can't wait tha see what steel weapons will be like. Definitely gonna change mah glaive's head for a steel one if it's better." Azhul said excitedly while looking back at her mother. The two burned with the same type of excitement.
"If we are looking to simply register as many ideas as possible, we could also register that crutch design. I'm sure there'd be quite a few people interested in using it." Oinna added while refilling Urla's tea.
"Hmm... this one we should register as our idea, but give the idea out for free." Michael said rather plainly after hearing Oinna.
"For free?" Runhar asked confused. "Ye'd make massive profits off of them though. If a war, skirmish or generally any conflict would happen, they would be a useful and necessary tool for those injured."
"That's exactly why. Because it would be so useful to those hurt, its why I don't want there to be people coming to get permission from us to produce them and then sell them at a high price. They should just be available for anyone to make. That way people can make their own if need be. I'll profit off of people's love for a higher quality product or off of their need for efficient tools or for many other reasons, but I don't want to profit off of their misery or by making a shit product." Michael said with a clear tone of frustration in his voice. He knew that regardless of world, there will be already plenty of people who'll do that, he just didn't wish to be one of 'em.
There was a general chatter of agreement between the other members of the discussion, although Oinna kept quiet. She looked at Michael silently, without him noticing, while the others spoke of agreeing or being impartial to that conclusion.
'That is... so kind.' The young tuskir healer thought as she seemed to get distracted by replaying the scene in her head.
"You might want tha blink a bit as well, or you might bore a hole in his head." Urla whispered to Oinna, in her usual monotonous and stoic voice, which startled the younger Tuskir woman, lightly.
"P-Pardon?! I-i... just thought... it was a nice idea... i was contemplating that." Oinna squeal whispered back to her elderly teacher.
"Alright." Urla said with a shrug of her shoulders, proceeding to sip once more her refilled wooden tea mug.
The reminder of this discussion had then covered agriculture attempts for the Tuskir tribe, using the seeds bought from Road's Turn, and later on Nushii and Vodra were brought for a discussion regarding their situation. It didn't take long after their options were presented of either being allowed to leave or to live here, that they opted to remain and see if they could get along here.
After the general meeting had been disbanded, so people could get on with their usual business, Michael, Urla and the Hay-yens remained. A very difficult conversation would follow, regarding Letra, their old companion.
