"... Here, this should do..." Elsie spoke, looking forward, though, speaking to the one she was practically dragging behind her.
"You still haven't told me where you're taking me," Rosa let out a lighthearted sigh, her hand being held by the woman in front of her, "If I didn't trust you so much, I'd think you were leading me to my doom…"
"It's a surprise. Trust me, it'll be worth the wait." Elsie smirked, looking back, "Don't you like surprises?"
"Well, I like when you surprise me–”
"Then shush! Just wait and see. We're almost there."
The two made their way through the sun lit city, the snow-covered streets crunching with every quickened step. As they passed, few people were out, most either locked away in their homes or at work. As for them, they had the day completely free. A rare thing for soldiers to have, especially during this time of year, but incidents had slowed down since the attack on Kachikov, and the General was letting her platoon take a well-earned rest.
Elsie had suggested going out, and Rosa agreed. They both hadn’t really gotten much time to be alone with each other, especially with the short hospital Elsie had to take due to her wounds, but all that didn’t matter. After all, today, Elsie wanted to show her something. Something she wouldn't believe unless she saw it with her own two eyes.
"Here, this way." Elsie gestured, pulling her towards a nearby alleyway.
"In– in there? Are you sure?"
"Positive! You'll love it, I promise."
"I... okay, okay. Only because it’s you telling me to…”
They ducked into the alley, making their way down a small staircase and past a couple of trash cans. As they descended, the air began to warm.
Her curiosity grew as they neared their destination, nonchalantly grabbing onto Elsie’s arm as they walked.
Eventually, they reached the bottom of the stairs, and a metal door came into view. Elsie knocked on it twice, a small window opening as a set of green eyes peered through.
"Ah…it’s been a while. Just you two?" The voice spoke out from behind the door with a hint of familiarity.
"Yeah. Two tickets."
"Alright, come in, come in."
Rosa couldn’t help but notice how the person phrased that… Like as if Elsie had been here before, or, pretty frequently.
The door swung open, and the two women entered. Inside was a warmly lit room, tables spread out and a bar at the back. Music played from a speaker, a piano piece that sounded so incredibly… foreign. Music wasn't quite so common in Sanctuary. Especially not in a public place like this.
"What... is this?" Rosa spoke, taking a step forward.
"A bar! Heh, though considering the prude you are, I'm not surprised you didn't realize that! This is a Speakeasy. It's where humans can come and enjoy music, booze, and food in peace, without worrying about anything outside!" She grinned, taking her hand once more, "Come on, let's get a seat! We've got a whole night ahead of us, and I wanna get you nice and drunk before the show starts!"
"Sh-show? There's an entire show…?”
"Oh, there's a show, alright. You'll see."
The two found a table in the corner, and the bartender brought them a couple of glasses.
"What'll it be, ladies? Something sweet? dry? hard? You name it, we've got it."
"Hmmm, I'll just have a beer for now... Rosa, what about you?"
"Just... water, I guess."
"Ah, come on! We're off tomorrow too! Let's have some fun!"
"... Fine. Just one, okay? I don't want to wake up feeling like something bit me."
"That's the spirit!" Elsie raised her fist in the air, "Ooo, talking about spirits-- House special for both of us instead! Hehe, I can't wait!"
Rosa swallowed down a slight feeling of anxiousness. "If you say so..."
"Good choice, ladies. It'll be a few minutes. In the meantime, enjoy yourselves!"
As the man left, Rosa's gaze returned to her surroundings. The place was surprisingly full, considering the hour. Most likely the people who were here were either already off duty, or were taking the chance to sneak out while the military wasn't actively patrolling. It was a bit of a surprise, but a pleasant one. After all, it was nice to be able to get away from the military for a bit.
"It's pretty sweet, huh? A place where we can just... relax. No stress, no fear, no worries. It's a nice change of pace." Elsie spoke, smiling, "The first time I came here was back when we were in the academy, actually. It was the night before our first big assessment. We were all pretty nervous beforehand... So, a bunch of us snuck out to come here, to calm our nerves."
"Oh... yeah. I remember that. We ended up sleeping in the library instead of our room."
"Mm! I went straight to you. Those who were sober, though, went to their dorms..."
"And of course, you weren’t one of them.”
"Oh, hell no. I was shitfaced. You remember, right?"
"... That explains how you were acting when you came back.. hm, I remember it clearly now..." Rosa put her hand to her chin, seeming to ponder.
"What?! What'd I do?"
"I guess you were a bit... you know-- touchy-feely."
"T-touchy-feely?!" Elsie's face grew bright red as she began to sputter, "What- what the fuck do you mean?!"
"Need a different synonym? Hmm... Affectionate?" Rosa spoke with a smirk, obviously trying to get a rouse out of Elsie.
"I wasn't affectionate, I was just drunk! ... Oh, god, you don't mean-- Please, tell me I didn't do something stupid..."
"Maybe you did..."
"Rosaaaa."
"I'm kidding, I'm kidding." Rosa giggled, shaking her head, "Nothing happened, trust me. Stopped you before you did anything you might regret while sober."
"Hah, phew... wait-- So I did try something?! Fuck..." She held her face, "I guess at that point I had a pretty huge crush on you, huh?"
"Mhm. Thinking back on it, I'm surprised I didn't ever pick up on that... At least then, I thought it was just the alcohol talking... Although, that might just be how you are. You did confess to me while a bit tipsy, too."
"Guess I did. 'm not the best with getting things off my chest. Apparently... a drink or two helps with that. Heh."
"Or three. Or four."
"Shuddup."
"I'm not judging. Just saying."
Elsie rolled her eyes, looking to the side. A smile soon formed on her face.
"... You're sweet."
"I know."
Rosa's thoughts lingered on their past conversation, and the memory it related to. How long ago had that been? Three years ago.
They'd known each other for just two years by then, both having enrolled in the Military Academy at the age of seventeen. Coincidentally, the two both graduated from their main schooling early, something to relate to one another about. What's more, with them being in all the same classes apart from one, it was no surprise they grew to be so close.
Although, it was during the time leading up to their first major assessment-- a test to see who had what it took to be an officer-- two years into their enrollment in the academy did this specific memory occur.
She began to think about just how it all started…
--
"Rosa! Rosa! You listening?" A voice called out to her, one brimming with excitement.
"... Huh?" Rosa lifted her eyes out from the textbook in front of her, staring at the blonde haired girl, "Wha– sorry... what were you saying?"
"Hah..." She let out an exaggerated sigh, "Me and some of the others are heading out for a drink. Ya coming with? You need a break, and besides, it’s just gonna get more stressful, right?"
"So close to the assessment...? I... Um... sorry, no, I think I'm gonna stay here and study. I really need to do well on it..."
"Psssh, you've been studying for weeks! You're going to do fine..."
"I can't just do fine... Need to be top of the class. Can't afford not to be..."
Elsie let out a frown as she stared at her friend, pity, perhaps, "You're stressed out. Come on-- you don't need to drink! To just… be there, Rosa. I'd... I'd really like it if you came with..."
Rosa was silent for a moment. Maybe she was deliberating, or maybe she was just trying to find the gentlest way to let her down. "I really... really am sorry, Elsie. I just... I just can't."
"Rosa..."
"..."
Awkward silence filled the library with neither daring to say a word. Eventually, however, Elsie turned around.
"Fine. I get it, I won't push you. Just... take a break soon, kay? Even just for a few minutes. Couldn’t stand to see you get sick by overexerting yourself.”
"... Hehe, thanks, Elsie. I will."
"Good…! I'm going to head out, then."
"Be safe."
She left after saying those words, and for a half second, Rosa wanted to stop her. To go back on her decision. To go with her. After all, Elsie looked so... sad.
It was heartbreaking to watch, but she couldn't let that get in the way. She needed this. Needed to do perfectly.
It was around five and a half hours until Elsie returned to see her. Rosa had noticed a few other of her classmates arrived, which had made her curious if Elsie was there too... But she didn't expect her to come to the library again, especially as it was so late.
"Elsie?" She tilted her eyes at the girl, wiping exhausted eyes as she put down her textbook, "Thought you'd go straight to bed when you came back-- Wh-- Your face is bright red... Are you drunk? I didn't think you meant alcohol when you mentioned drinks..."
"Mmm... Missed you," She spoke with a slurred tone, stumbling a bit as she approached, "... Wanted to see you. See your pretty face...~"
"Geez, Elsie... leave the compliments for when you aren't wasted."
"Heh, so-sorry. It's just so true. Y-you're beautiful."
"And you're a mess. As much as I appreciate it... you really should go to sleep."
"Then... can I-I sleep in your arms...?"
"Huh?" Rosa stared, her face becoming the faintest shade of red as she grew flustered, "You-you're really out of it... Look, how about we--"
Elsie suddenly fell forward, and Rosa reached out instinctively, catching her.
"Mm... yep. In your arms... hehe..."
Rosa let out a sigh, "You okay?
"I am now...~"
"That's... good."
She didn't even think. Her hands wrapped around Elsie, holding her tightly as she began to pull her in closer.
"..."
Elsie nuzzled her head against Rosa's shoulder, closing her eyes.
"... Elsie."
"Mmmmm...?"
"You can't sleep here, you know. And, I need to finish studying."
"Five minutes..."
"We're both going to fall asleep if we stay like this..."
"Then sleep with me..."
"... You know that--"
Elsie had looked back up at Rosa, staring into her black eyes. They seemed to absorb all the light in the room, reflecting only a soft glimmer, an intense darkness.
She couldn't even process what she was doing. It felt like instinct. Like her body knew what was happening, but her mind was still stuck.
"Rosa... I..."
Elsie had leaned forward ever so slightly.
"Elsie...?"
"I..."
Her breath smelled like alcohol, though not overpoweringly so. It was almost pleasant, mixed in with the slight minty smell her breath always had from over-brushing.
"What are you--"
She had placed a gentle kiss against Rosa's cheek, her lips lingering for a few moments.
"...!" Rosa's face flushed red, her hands shaking ever so slightly as they held Elsie.
"You're warm... I love that about you."
"... You-you... you're really drunk. You should--"
"Rosa, please..." She closed her eyes, burying her head once more into Rosa's shoulder, "Can I please... I… I don’t want… to be alo– alone…"
"..."
"Stay with me. Even just for a few minutes."
"..." Rosa was silent, looking down. Eventually, though, her head lifted, and she gave a gentle nod. "Fine... Fine, just... Five minutes. We'll sleep for five minutes. And then you're going back to the dorm, okay? That’s final…”
"Okay... I-I... I..."
Exhaustion took her before she could finish her words. Rosa didn't want to think about what she was about to say. The idea almost scared her, almost as much as it made her heart flutter.
But Rosa was tired too. It was no surprise when her own eyes grew heavy, and she drifted to sleep, her head against Elsie's.
She wouldn't bring it up again after. She was far too scared to even think about it.
--
Smiling, she let out a faint giggle, "You know, you were pretty cute that night. Especially after waking up. Hehe, your hair was all messed up, and you looked super confused."
"Aww, geez, don't remind me. I still feel bad about that. I was... a bit out of it."
"It's fine. You were adorable, and, in the end, we both got some rest, didn't we? Though... it's funny... You were going to tell me that night, weren't you...?"
Elsie flushed a crimson red, noticeable strongly even upon her bronzen toned skin, "W-well, I-I mean... maybe, but..."
"You were. Heh. Too bad you fell asleep before you could tell me. You would have loved seeing my surprised face... though, you wouldn't remember it for sure. I doubt you even remember what happened after you kissed me."
"Probably– Wait-- Kissed you?!"
"Oh, right. Just on the cheek, don't worry. You didn't do anything else. Not even when you asked me to 'stay with you'."
"Goddamn it, that's embarrassing..." She hid her face, her ears and cheeks both the color of roses, "I'm... sorry about that, by the way. If I was any sober, I wouldn't have done something like that..."
She smiled. "I already told you it's fine, didn't I? Besides, I..." Her face grew to be the faintest bit red herself, "I don't think I hated it then."
"... Really? Ugh... Maybe I should have confessed sooner."
"Maybe. Would have saved you the wait..."
"Talking about waiting..."
Their drinks had arrived at last, along with a side dish of chips.
"Ah, the show is about to start. Better eat quickly." Elsie smirked, "Trust me, you're gonna love this.
"You keep mentioning that… it seems kinda ominous.”
"Just watch, you'll see."
"If you say so..."
At the end of the bar, a small stage was visible. A man walked on stage, dressed in a fine tuxedo and a red scarf.
"Ladies and Gentlemen. For our first song, may I ask that you direct your attention to the piano. Playing an original piece titled 'Night of the Forsaken', please welcome... Lady M!"
A figure stepped onto the stage, and the room erupted with applause. Her entire face was masked, her hair too hidden. Even her eyes were covered, a silver mask concealing them. All that was visible were her hands, and the white gloves she wore.

As she took a seat, she cracked her knuckles.
"Who is she...?" Rosa whispered to Elsie, leaning over a tad.
"Shhh, shush. Just watch. I'll tell you later."
With those words, she began to play. It was a slow tune, the keys moving gently across the board. A somber, lonely song. One that tugged at your heartstrings.
"It's beautiful," Rosa spoke, smiling as she closed her eyes, "I… think it’s the first time I’ve heard a piano this close…”
"Yeah. She's pretty good, isn't she? I can't wait for the real show to start, though."
"... what’s next? The real, real show?”
Elsie only smirked in response.
After the first song, there were a few more. Some upbeat, others slow, yet each were as beautiful as the last. Finally, the last song faded out, a round of applause erupted.
"Thank you, thank you," The masked woman said, standing, "I shall return in due time… but for now, please give your attention to the lovely Gray brothers.”
She gestured, and two men came forward, instruments in hand. One was a guitar, the other a saxophone.
"A live band... That's nice," Rosa spoke, her smile not fading, "I didn't even know there were any in Sanctuary..."
"Yeah. This place has it all, huh?"
"I suppose it does."
As the next song played, the two began to talk.
"So, I'm curious. Who was that lady up on stage? She was really talented..."
"Hm? She calls herself Lady M, as you heard! She's pretty famous, actually. Apparently, she's not from Sanctuary. Rumor has it she's from one of the outer villages, though who's to say? Not many people have seen her unmasked."
"Oh? That's interesting. Why doesn't she show her face?"
"Who knows? Maybe she has something to hide. Maybe it's just a part of her aesthetic."
"Heh. She is quite the performer, though."
"Agreed. But, I'll let you in on a little secret..."
"Hm?"
"She's not the one putting on the 'real' show. He is."
"Who? One of the band members? No, don't tell me. Is it that guitarist?"
"No, no. Watch the man at the back, the one serving drinks."
"... What about him?"
"I'll explain. Just wait for it."
The two went silent, simply listening. It was a pleasant tune. Slow, a bit funky. Not exactly Rosa's taste, but it was still enjoyable.
"Alright, the time is drawing near. Let's pick up the pace, shall we?"
"Yes, sir."
The band changed the tempo.
"And... begin!"
"Huh?" Rosa's eyebrows raised as she noticed the waiter move from his post, taking a seat next to a patron. He spoke to them, and they smiled.
"He's... dancing with her."
"That he is."
"... Huh. I didn't know there were... er-- people... who did that."
"Ehe, right? I think it's kind of cool, actually..."
"Surprised you'd say that."
"Hm? Why?"
"That's a Vampire tradition. Or, so I'm told."
"Well, yeah..."
"Music too. Doesn't being a part of all that feel... I don't know... wrong? I just..."
"No, no. Not like that. I don't support anything a vampire does, not even this, but..."
"... Yeah, I get what you're saying. This is just... different. Human."
Elsie grinned, her eyes narrowed ever so slightly. Not out of any hostility, but excitement. Thus, she stood up, staring down at Rosa as she outreached her hand.
"What are you...?"
"I want to dance with you."
"Are you crazy?! I don't know how!"
"I don't either! C'mon, it'll be fun!"
"I-I..."
"Please, Rosa? I want to share this experience with you. Please, just... take my hand?"
"..."
Rosa was quiet, looking around the room. It was a small area, with perhaps a few dozen people, most dancing together. No one was paying attention to them, and if anyone did, it wasn't a big deal.
Rosa swallowed, letting out a sigh and finally taking her hand.
"Thank you." She smiled, a bit more gentle than before.
They made their way to the floor, and Elsie took the lead, pulling Rosa close.
"How am I supposed to..."
"Dunno. Just move with the music, I guess?"
"That's easy to say, but..."
"Just close your eyes. Listen to the rhythm… Move with me."
"Alright, alright."
Slowly, Rosa began to sway, her eyes closed and her face pressed into Elsie's chest. It was an odd feeling. The warmth of her against her, the beat of her heart, the sound of her breathing, it was... almost relaxing.
Elsie didn't seem to have the same reaction, her face a dark red and her arms wrapped around Rosa tightly, but she was happy.
"E-Elsie, you're holding too tight."
"Oh-- Sorry..."
They continued, the music having slowed with many of the patrons singing along as they danced. Those who still sat clapped in beat with the music, cheering for the band.
The Lady M from before had returned, her piano's melody seamlessly melding with the other's instruments. The many other sounds which would typically overwhelm Rosa so easily were drowned out, the only thing she could hear being the music and Elsie.
It was so calm, so tranquil. Rosa felt so relaxed. Her heart was pounding, yet her breath was steady. She couldn't help but feel like this was the most peaceful moment she'd had in years.
She was glad.
"... Thank you... Elsie."
"F-for what? I haven't done anything..."
"Taking me here. This place... these feelings... it's all new. So, thank you. For sharing this experience with me."
"Oh, um..." Elsie looked away, her blush deepening, "You’re welcome, and… T-thanks too. I'm glad. I wanted to bring you here for a long time."
"Really?"
"Yeah. This place is kinda special to me.... And now, you're here too. It makes it even more special."
"You're... lovely. Elsie."
She leaned forward, staring up into her eyes as they danced.
"Rosa..."
"You're beautiful too, you know. I wanted to say that to you that night."
"..." Elsie didn't reply, her lips held open slightly as if the words had faded away in her mouth.
"You're so sweet, Elsie. And strong. So, so strong. I really admire that. You have such a kind heart, and--"
"Stop."
"Hm?"
"S-stop, I'm... not gonna be able to stop myself from kissing you if you don't. Please." She was half joking, it seemed, but there was a slight air of genuineness to her words.
Rosa smiled, pulling Elsie closer. "Then kiss me, I wouldn't mind."
"But-- Right here? With all these people...?
"Does it matter? I doubt anyone would notice. Or, even care."
"Rosa... you... you sure?"
"Very."
"..."
Elsie took a deep breath, her hands trembling ever so slightly. She moved slowly, her heart racing in her chest as she did.
She placed her hand upon Rosa's cheek, and her lips met hers.
Rosa's eyes closed, as she kissed back, her hands moving to the small of Elsie's back. It was a soft kiss, gentle, as the others had been, and the two stayed like that for a moment, neither wanting to part.
Finally, though, Elsie pulled away, a smile on her face.
"I love you."
Rosa nodded, resting her head on Elsie's shoulder, "I know. And I love you too."
Elsie didn't even need to respond. Neither did Rosa need to say anything else. They both knew what the other was feeling, and to a degree, thinking.
It was a peaceful silence, one that neither dared to break, and so, the music eventually ended.
"That was the last song for the evening, folks. Thank you all for coming. Come again soon!"
Applause filled the bar as everyone thanked the band, and the two separated, though still each held the other's hands. They returned to their seats, and ordered another drink.
"So, did you have fun?" Elsie spoke, a smirk on her face.
"Do you even have to ask? Of course I did... It was nice. Really nice."
"Oh, I am pretty great, aren't I?"
"I was talking about the drinks, but I guess you were okay too." Rosa joked, a giggle escaping from her mouth.
"Come on, I'm sensitive, you know..." She rested her face on her palm, smiling as she replied.
"Oh, that's quite clear…” She cleared her throat, “So, what now?"
"Well, we have the night off. I'd say it's time for us to get drunk, and maybe do something stupid."
"Maybe. Although, maybe this is a good time for me to tell you I've never drank before this. At all."
"Really? Man... You're lucky what we ordered is a low percent... The next thing I'm gonna order for you, though..."
"At the very least, don't make me too much of a mess in the morning, okay?"
"As in for drinks or...?" Elsie let out a smirk.
"What's that supposed to mean?!"
"Nothiiinng~"
"Whatever... Let's just focus on drinking. What are we going to have?"
"Hm... I'm thinking a Long Island. What about you?"
"I... guess I'll have the same. Never tried one, but you've got good tastes, so..."
"Hehe, you're right about that!"
A few hours of drinking went by in what felt like thirty minutes. Their glasses were refilled several times, and their laughter and jokes became louder and more frequent. By the time they'd left, the bar was emptying, and they had both grown more than just exhausted.
"Goddamn it, the snow's really coming down..." Elsie frowned, staring up at the sky as the two took cover beneath a store's roof.
"Ugh, just give me a minute, Elsie... I need a breather."
"I'll make sure to keep in mind that you're a lightweight next time... Damn."
"S-shut up, you're just as drunk as I am.."
"Maybe, but at least I can walk in a straight line."
The snowfall was thick, and it was only getting colder. The wind carried the snow like a blizzard, and the street lamps' lights were hardly visible through it.
"No way I could bring you to your house in this weather... way too far away..." Elsie groaned, racking her mind as she tried to figure out what to do.
"... Your... your apartments only a few minutes away, though, right? We could stay there..."
"M-my place?" Elsie's eyes widened, her cheeks reddening at some sort of mysterious thought rushing through her head.
"If... that's okay with you...?" Rosa tilted her head as she looked up at her.
"Of course it is! I mean-- I just haven't cleaned in a while-- And--"
"You know I don't care about that... Come on, let's go before it gets any worse out here."
"Alright. Here, lean on me, I'll carry you. Don't want ya falling, after all."
"Mm... thanks."
She took her arm, wrapping it around her shoulders, and the two trudged through the snow, heading towards Elsie's apartment. Each tugged their coats tight, staying as close to the other as possible. Despite the ever present frost, Rosa didn't feel the cold. She felt warm. Though, it was difficult to place whether that was the honest truth, or just how wonderful it felt to be so close to Elsie.
Either way, it was only a few minutes until they arrived to the complex-- a large number of apartments lined up across multiple floors.
"Here we are," Elsie spoke, fishing her key from her pocket, "It's on the fourth floor. I'm guessing you aren't rested enough to walk up the stairs...?"
"Elevator, please..."
"What I thought..."
The elevator opened, and as soon as it did, the two entered. Elsie quickly clicked the button to the correct floor, and it wasn't long until they had arrived to their destination. Rosa stumbled out, leaning heavily against Elsie as they walked.
"Alrighty, here we are..."
She turned the knob after inserting the key, the door opening with a satisfying click.
"I'm sorry for the mess, I was going to clean today, but... I didn't."
Rosa giggled, "I already told you I don't care about that, remember?"
"I know... It’s just embarrassing, especially since you’re so tidy…"
"Oh, come on, it's not that bad."
The door shut behind them, and Elsie kicked off her shoes.
"Let's get you changed, okay? You can wear something of mine... Might be a bit big on you, but that's fine, right?"
"I don’t mind... Thanks."
"Don't mention it."
Elsie guided her into the bedroom, helping her sit down. She dug around in her closet, soon pulling out a soft, white blouse and shorts.
"Wore these when I was younger, so hopefully they'll fit alright? I mean, I'm not that taller than you..."
"Like seven inches... and there's a pressing issue in the chest region," She smiled slightly, "But… Thanks, Elsie."
"'Course. I'll wait outside... let me know when you're done."
"Kay."
As Elsie left the room, Rosa's gaze lingered upon her for a few moments. She then turned her attention to the clothing laid out in front of her, smiling slightly. It was nice, she thought, how Elsie thought about her. Even with something so simple, it still felt like a big deal.
Slowly, she began to undress. Her coat, her sweater, and her shirt were discarded on the ground. Then, her skirt, and her insulated tights, then, finally, her bra. As her body was exposed to the air, she felt a chill, and she shivered. Even inside, it was quite frigid. Of course, it made sense if she thought about it for even more than a moment. It wasn't as if Elsie's somewhat drab apartment had much for temperature control, other than the walls themself.
As she grabbed the white blouse, she pulled it over her head. It was, just as expected, far too big for her. The collar fell off her shoulder, and it was loose, yet comfortable. The shorts were much the same, but luckily, she was able to tighten them to fit her smaller frame.
"You can come in now," She called, sitting on the bed as she buttoned up the blouse, "Sorry for the wait."
"No problem at all! The clothes… um, look good on you!”
"Thanks..." Rosa said, letting out a soft yawn. She was still a bit tipsy, it seemed, with the ever progressing exhaustion only getting closer to taking hold of her.
As for Elsie, she hid the exhaustion a bit better. The amount she had drunk, however, she hid not so well.
"Mind... if I lay down?" Elsie asked, standing aimlessly next to the humble bed.
"It's... it's your bed?"
"Well, yeah..."
"Lie down, dummy."
Elsie, as if following an order from a superior, sat beside her. Then, she carefully laid herself below the covers just as Rosa had. Elsie was quiet, hiding her face with a pillow, embarrassed or flustered, or perhaps something in between.
"... You're acting as if this is the first time we've slept together in the same bed..." Rosa stared at her, though seeing her face was an impossibility with the current barrier, the fearsome pillow.
Rosa sighed, lightly raising the pillow to look at Elsie.
"You know, I don't think you ever got this flustered before we started dating…"
"The very fact we are dating makes it more embarrassing…”
Rosa leaned up, putting her weight on her left arm, "What, are you expecting something to happen?"
"..." Elsie didn't reply, simply looking to the side.
"Elsie," Rosa whispered as she leaned close to her, "You're drunk. I'm drunk. Not... a good idea. Even I know that..."
"I know... I wouldn’t–”
"But." Rosa continued.
She moved the pillow Elsie held so close to her face aside, leaning over her with her hand looming close to her cheek.
"If you really wanted…”
Rosa placed her hand gently upon her cheek, staring deep into her eyes.
"... I might be able to convince myself..."
Elsie stared, her eyes wide as her lips quivered. Her breathing grew rapid, and she swallowed hard, unable to take her gaze away from Rosa.
"We... both trust each other, after all. 'Cuz... it's love, not..."
They stared deeply into each other's eyes. Elsie could feel Rosa's warm breath against her neck, and Rosa felt her body under hers.
"Don't... don't tease me, Rosa."
"... I'm not... Not if you..."
"Not what?"
Rosa leaned closer, their lips very nearly brushing against each other.
"Not if you…” She closed her eyes, "Tell me to."
She paused. It was silent.
"I want to hear you say it."
The air was tense. Their lips were only a few inches apart, their noses nearly touching, their bodies close, their hearts beating as one. That 'one' being rapidly. Incredibly rapidly.
"Do... Do you... Do you want to…”
Elsie's voice was trembling.
"To..."
She couldn't bring herself to finish the sentence.
"One word... j... just one. We need to both want it... both be okay with it..." Rosa stared, her blinking slowed as if she didn't want to look away from her for even a moment.
"I-I..."
Their foreheads touched, and Rosa closed her eyes.
"You're trembling. Why?"
"B-because... I..."
Elsie closed her eyes. She couldn't take it anymore.
"... I'm scared, Rosa. I'm terrified. Of what might happen. Of... of everything. I-I love you so, so much, and the thought of losing that... or... or hurting you..."
Rosa placed a gentle kiss against her forehead.
"Well… it makes sense… we’re both new to this whole– love… thing.”
“Yeah. Yeah... hah."
"..."
"... I… I meant what I said that night, Elsie."
"Hm...?"
"That I do love you. That I'm yours. Nothing could change that. Not the world, not the universe, not even death itself. I'm yours, Elsie."
Elsie swallowed, nodding slowly.
"And... and..." She took a deep breath, "I'm yours. If you'll have me, of course..."
"There's nobody else I would. I'm happy with you, Elsie. That's why... I won't do anything. Not if you're uncomfortable."
"..."
"I can see the fear in your eyes. And... I understand. I'm… I’m scared too..."
"Then... why do you..."
"Because I know we'll both be safe. Because I'm happy. Happier than I've been in years. And I know you are too. And that's enough for me."
"Me too. I just... I'm so... nervous. A-and worried. That I'll screw something up, or... hurt you..."
"Then, we can stop. Right here. And forget this ever happened. We'll go to sleep and wake up the same we were before. That's okay."
"..."
"..."
"No."
"Huh?"
"We can't stop. Because... because we'll both regret it."
"..." Rosa let out a mixed look of worry and relief.
"I love you, Rosa. I’m not ever going to regret that… So... let's do this. Let's be happy. Let's have a memory together. No regrets. Not tonight. So..."
"... You sure?" Rosa asked.
Smirking, Elsie leaned forward just enough for them to touch, for their lips to touch, for them to kiss.
"I hope instead of my word, that'll suffice. I'm... much better with this."
Rosa smiled, and the two shared another kiss. Gentle and soft, slower than the others. Their lips met again and again, and their bodies were drawn together. The distance between them shrank and their hands moved to each, their fingers interlocked.
They parted for just a moment, gazing at each other once more.
"Then... there's my... answer, too," She said, her voice low, quiet pants escaping from her mouth.
"Hehe..." Elsie couldn't help but let out a soft chuckle, "Guess so."
Rosa's body moved, her hands trailing along Elsie's arms and stopping at her wrists. She pulled her up with little difficulty, perhaps a perk of military fitness, and her back was against the bed frame, her arms gently held above her.
"I guess..."
Her lips found her neck as her arm absentmindedly drifted below Elsie’s shirt.
"That..."
She placed a gentle kiss upon her neck as she leaned forward.
"This is okay... right?"
Her words were a mere whisper, a murmur, yet they were oh so clear in the silent air. Not even the wind dared to howl, dared to interrupt.
"Yes..." Elsie's response was just as quiet, her eyes half closed.
"Mm..." Not a word to respond back with, yet it served the same purpose. An acknowledgement, as well as a pure carrier of feeling.
Feeling. That was what was shared. She couldn't tell what the feelings were, exactly. It was a mixture of all things wonderful, all things which could never be quite perfectly spoken into existence.
The feeling of her body and the warmth of it. The way she looked at her, the way her light hair fell across her shoulders, the way her face was so beautiful and relaxed, the way her arms trembled ever so slightly, how that tremble paradoxically eased and intensified as she touched her.
Her scent. It was faint, barely noticeable. A light, subtle smell of what could only be described as 'Human', the aroma of their drinks, the smell of her hair, her sweat, her body. Even things you would expect or even know to have no scent. The warmth, the love, the kindness, the happiness, the sorrow, the loneliness, the fear, the desire, the want. It all had a scent. A scent only she could detect. Only she could pick out. Only she could identify.
These feelings were intoxicating, almost overwhelming. Yet, Rosa couldn't get enough. She had to have more. More of these feelings, more of this.
It was a single word, spoken softly, almost as a whimper.
"What is it?"
"I want more..."
"Of?"
"... You..."
With a knowing smile, Elsie hugged her closer.
"..."
She didn't reply. She couldn't. All that was left was the sound of the wind outside which had finally returned, and the gentle beating of her heart, the only thing she could really hear.
Elsie leaned up, her arms now wrapped around her. Rosa's own were at her side, her head resting upon her chest.
"What's wrong, Rosa? Too tired? You can rest, if you'd like."
"..."
Elsie smirked, letting out a faint chuckle.
"It's funny, really. We've spent weeks and months building this up, and yet, in the end, we didn't really do much. I'm... not entirely sure how this all works, actually. But, still..."
"..."
"Rosa...?"
"I'm sorry. I'm... really... sorry."
"Sorry? What for?"
"It's just... it's all so sudden... And... and-- There's... just so much. My head, my body, my heart, everything feels like it's spinning, and I can't brea– breathe, and... I-- I can't--"
"Hey, hey. Slow down. Look at me, Rosa. Come on. Look at me."
Slowly, yet harshly, she lifted her head, her gaze meeting Elsie's.
"Deep breaths. Take deep breaths."
Rosa nodded, though despite her words, her breathing would only harshen. But, she would try.
"Good. There you go. Focus on me, alright? I'm here. I'll always be here."
"E-elsie... I-- I--"
"You're... fine. We're fine. Okay?"
"... Okay."
"Just relax, Rosa. We don't have to do anything. Just be here. Be with me."
"I'd... like that."
"Yeah. Me too. Just..."
She placed a gentle kiss upon her forehead.
"Breathe."
"... Yes."
Another kiss was given to her forehead, then to her lips, then her cheeks. For comfort, not passion. Although, not to say either were not present in the other. It was a matter of quantity and importance. How much each balanced into the other.
Rosa's eyes were closed, a faint smile across her face. Elsie continued, not bothering to speak. There was nothing to say. No need for words. Just the feeling of the other, the touch, the closeness, and the silence. A somewhat different feeling than before, a lighter one. It did not smother her, but instead held her carefully. As if she was glass. Something delicate, something to be treasured. Something to be kept close, yet not tightly. Not roughly, else she might shatter.
The room was silent, and the only sound was their breathing. They were both exhausted. Mentally, physically, and emotionally. Yet, neither dared to fall asleep.
They lay there together, both holding the other like they were the only thing keeping them attached to the world. And, truthfully, it might've been.
Neither knew what time it was, nor how long they had laid together. Neither knew what would come, or how they would feel when the morning came. The only thing they knew was the present. And, the only thing that mattered was the other.
That's all that mattered.
All that would ever matter.
