Chapter 4: Terror from Below.

Chapter 4: Terror from Below.

When Jessica reached the bunker door, she thought at first. The blobs had just polished the door. Upon closer examination, she realized the door looked like they had added a covering of a very shiny metal to the exterior of the door. Touching it, she found it felt cool to the touch.

Looking at Skye, she asked "Will this help keep them from busting down the door?"

The blue blob waved a tendril in agreement and seemed to say it could stand up to a large punishment before it broke. The blue blob waved at the walls as if to say the walls would break before the door did. Jessica nodded and asked "Could you also coat the walls?"

Skye stopped moving for a second before shaking a tendril in a negative. It waved at the walls then made motions to indicate it was simply too much space to cover. Nodding Jessica looked over the other parts and found the panel to open the door was heavily modified.

"Can we even still open this door?"

Daisy waved an affirmative and Jessica was satisfied. They had secured the door for now. "Okay, the bad people out there want to get in here really bad. I need you guy's to go look around and see if they have a way in or some way to force us out of the bunker."

The blobs waved acknowledgement of the order and went to work examining the bunker in thorough detail. Jessica headed to the kitchen and made several ration bars. She stored the excess and brought the hard working blobs ration bar each.

After feeding the blobs, she went to check in on her sister to see how she was doing. Nikki was currently asleep on her bunk, and Jessica pulled the blanket over her. Rubbing her sisters head, Jessica smiled at Nikki. When her parents had died when she was fourteen, Jessica had to care for her sister. It had not been easy these ten years; her sister was a handful at times.

Still she loved Nikki, and would do anything for her. Even if it meant having to leave Jacob to fend for himself. A twinge of guilt went through her, but she beat it back by rationalizing that if they had opened the door, they would only risk their lives.

Jessica had seen first hand what happens when someone tried being a hero. Her foolish uncle had tried stopping some raiders from stealing from a family and in return got her parents killed. Apparently he lost his heroic nerve after that, for he ran like a coward leaving Jessica to save herself and Nikki.

They had to crawl through an old sewer line to escape. They wondered the wasteland for a while before finding this old abandoned home and setting up here. Fixing it up took quite a few years of hard work, and now some slavers were damaging it. Jessica gritted her teeth and walked to the Arsenal, where she picked up her rifle.

Running her hands down the barrel, she vowed if she got a shot, she would kill them. The numbers at the moment were just too much for her to handle. That was her first lesson in killing people, never get in over your head. A few weeks before she had found this place she got ambushed.

It was a team of raiders, and she had to flee inside an old apartment building that was crumbling down. A woman raider eventually found her and they got into a fight. The woman raider nearly stabbed her with a blade, but Jessica managed to blow her head off with the rifle.

The other raiders proved harder to kill, and one managed to flee. Jessica had been lucky, they were not the brightest raiders and they made critical mistakes. These slavers, on the other hand, looked prepared. Too prepared actually, they seemed to have a solid backing. Perhaps from one of the floating cities.

Sometimes at night, she dreamed of those she killed. While Jessica had only killed those who would kill or harm her or her sister, she was still haunted. Slowly she relaxed her tight grip on the rifle and attached it to her back. She went to check in on the monitors to see if they were up to no good.

Back in the cage, Doctor Melissa could be seen sitting. Her blonde hair was tied into a ponytail, and she looked exhausted. Another woman and man were in the cage with her. Jacob was nowhere to be seen. Above the cage a tarp was placed to keep the sun of the slaves.

In the middle of her front yard, a circle had been dug, and a group of the slavers were practicing wrestling. A vicious battle between Dennis and another was taking place. Jessica could see each man was bleeding from the intense fight. The crowd nearby was cheering them on.

They suddenly stopped and looked down her driveway. Soon a large vehicle came into view. It was one of the biggest she had seen up and running. The sides looked as if they were armored, and when it stopped several more men poured out of the vehicle. They opened up the back and dragged another pair of slaves out and brought them to the slave cage and tossed them in.

After that, they began pulling out a large group of boxes. They pried the boxes open and began to take out parts of a strange machine. They also pulled out a large book. Using the book, the group of men began to point at parts and argue amongst themselves as they put them together.

Jessica took another look at the large car that had appeared. She frowned and wondered how many men Papa Bright has working for him. The more she saw, the more it made her nervous. Maybe he was more then a simple slaver, perhaps he had another reason for being in the area. Which might mean he would be staying longer then she thought.

As she was thinking, Jessica saw a shirtless Papa Bright appear in a window of her house. He yelled some things and pointed at the well, then the large car. One of the men went to the large car and took out a large pink box. He brought it inside of her house.

For the next half-hour she watched as the men constructed the device from the boxes. As it did, it began resembling in part a chainsaw. Though it was the largest chainsaw, she had ever seen, it would require at least four people just to hold it. It was also missing a blade, but that didn't stop them from raising a cheer when they finished.

They hauled to the well, and using a series of ropes lowered it down the well. When they got it to the bottom, she watched as they attached a series of packs to it, and four men lifted it. A fifth man pushed a button and the device roared to life.

A sparking plasma field popped into existence and Jessica was stunned to realize this was the blade. She watched as they brought the blade to the door and began to cut through the first bunker door. Going to the hallway, she spotted Blaze near the door. "Hey Blaze if they start making a dent in that door let me know."

Blaze waved acknowledgement and watched the door. Going back to the monitors, she saw that they had torn through the first door already. Pulling aside the chunks of the front door, they began working on the second door. From her seat in the security office, she could her banging on the bunker door.

Stolen novel; please report.

Nikki came in looking concerned, and Jessica whispered "They've breached the first door, we need to keep quiet now. They are working on the second door, but it looks like the blobs have managed to secure that door from being cut open."

Indeed, as they watched the Plasma chainsaw was experiencing considerable trouble and was starting to smoke. Finally, it stopped, and looked as though it was now busted. The men began to argue amongst themselves, and they had the device pulled out of the well.

They got into a scuffle at the top when Dennis came along and examined the machine. He looked pissed and smacked the men. Papa Bright came out with an open shirt and leading a girl by a chain. He got to the yelling group and said a few words to them. The four men had their shirts ripped off and tied up. Dennis took a whip and began to whip the four's backs.

Nikki gasped and said "Oh my god! That's Jacob"

"What?" Jessica looked at the monitor looking for Jacob but not seeing him, until she took a closer look at the girl chained up by Papa Bright. She was dressed in a pink outfit, and Jessica suddenly realized that it was Jacob, but he looked out of it.

After the men were whipped, Papa Bright took out a container opened it and took out some pills, He swallowed one and gave the other for Jacob to swallow. Jacob did so, and Papa Bright led him back into the house.

Jessica sighed and went to the blobs and patted each one and whispered "Thank you for the door."

Nikki came up and whispered "Why are we whispering?"

"They still don't know we are in here. Now that first door is gone, they might be able to hear in here. So it's best to be silent as possible."

Glass waved a tentacle at her and seemed to want her to follow it. Doing so, Glass led her down to the lower level and to the far corner past the Fusion Plant. To her surprise she watched as it moved a floor panel aside and revealed a shaft down with a steel ladder.

Jessica had never found this before, so this came as a unexpected surprise. She was unsure of where it led. Going back up she whispered to Nikki, "Glass found a secret shaft down. I need to go down and check it out. Keep an eye on the monitors until I get back."

"What will I do if they find a way in?"

"Ask the blobs for help, if they can't help go down the shaft and find me."

Nikki nodded, and Jessica went to storage and picked up a lantern. Making sure it had a fresh E-Pack, she headed down to the lower level, where she found Skye waiting for her. "You want to go with me?" Skye waved yes, and Jessica began climbing down the shaft.

As she went, she looked up and saw Sky rolling down the side. Skye let out a soft blue glow letting her see the ladder clearly. For several minutes she just climbed down. It was verging on the ridiculous on how far she climbed when she finally reached the bottom.

Stepping off she found her arms had gotten a bit sore from the effort. Activating the lantern, she found she was in a large tunnel. It was almost ten feet across. It was made out of concrete and had several large pipes running along the walls. The tunnel had continued some time before it made a turn. On the opposing side the tunnel just ended. Going to the wall, she found it was solid rock. The pipes seemed to go directly into the rock.

Getting a surreal feeling, Jessica turned and began to walk down the tunnel. Alongside one of the walls was a painting of a woman holding a sword and the word VadeTech written next to it. As far as she could tell this wasn't a sewer or the like. When they reached the corner, she found the tunnel ended at a door. It was a relatively normal sized door.

When they reached the door, Jessica tried opening it. She found it was secured. Next to it was a panel, looking down at Skye, she asked "Can you unlock it?" The blue blob looked excited to try and reached out to the panel. For several seconds she watched as it worked, before all of a sudden it physically recoiled.

Skye began waving frantically at her. "What's the matter you can't get the door open?"

The blob shook its tendril as if to say it could, but it would not. Jessica got the profound sense it was terrified of something beyond the door. Jessica put her ear against the door, trying to see if she could hear anything beyond. Skye began pulling at her indicating it wanted to leave right away.

Although Jessica heard nothing, she got the strangest sensation that something was right behind the door. A cold chill began spreading throughout her body, and she permited herself be dragged away by Skye. "If there is something bad in there, at least those slavers won't be able to come through here easily."

While they were walking back, Skye was holding onto her hand and pulled her forward. Every so often she got the feeling it was looking back not at her, but making sure they weren't being followed. The whole experience was creeping her out, and when she started to climb back up, a bit of adrenaline forced her to climb faster.

When she got back up, Skye slammed the floor panel back into place and began to work on sealing it. "Is that really necessary?" Jessica asked. Skye waved that it was and continued on. Glass came over to check on them, and Skye waved at Glass. Glass shuddered and went to help Skye seal the panel down.

Going back up she found her sister sitting tired in the security room. "Anything happen while I was gone?" she whispered.

Nikki shook her head and whispered "No, they seem to be done for the day. What did you discover?"

“It led to a tunnel, which led to a white door. I asked Skye to help me get in, but when it attempted something really spooked it. It refused to even open the door, and the whole experience creeped me out. When I got back up, they started to seal the shaft up.”

“Was there anything else down there?”

“Oh yeah, there was a picture of woman with a sword and a name Vadetech.”

Nikki looked startled for a moment and whispered hotly,“Did you say Vadetech?”

“I did. Do you recognize them?”

“Only vaguely. According to what I've read is that they were one of the leading weapons manufacturing companies. They also were one of the companies responsible for the building of the Deiwos bombs.”

“That doesn’t sound good.”

“They weren’t the nicest companies from what I’ve read. It sounds like there is a hidden weapons facility down there. It’s a really good idea not to investigate a place like that.”

“Great, we got slaver's above and now creepy weapons facilities below.”

Nikki shrugged and whispered “Is it safe to take a shower?”

“Yeah, the bathroom should be quiet enough for you to shower. Just don't sing as you usually do.”

Nikki smirked and said "Good night."

"Night."

Jessica occupied a few hours observing the slavers settle in for the night before she fell asleep.
